Roll up and give your best ONS Baby Names 2022 predictions!

It’s that time again. The ONS baby name data for England and Wales in 2022 is due to be published any day now and MNers tend to be pretty spot on with their predictions.

To help, here’s a reminder of the top tens for boys and girls from 2021:

1 Noah
2 Oliver
3 George
4 Arthur
5 Muhammad
6 Leo
7 Harry
8 Oscar
9 Archie
10 Henry

1 Olivia
2 Amelia
3 Isla
4 Ava
5 Ivy
6 Freya
7 Lily
8 Florence
9 Mia
10 Willow

The Scottish data for 2022 has been out since March and the top tens (well, top 11 for boys) for Scotland were:

1 Noah
2 Jack
3 Leo
4 Harris
5 Luca
6 Oliver
7 Rory
8 Archie
9= Theo
9= Alfie
9= James

1 Olivia
2 Isla
3 Freya
4 Millie
5 Emily
6 Amelia
7= Grace
7= Sophie
9= Ella
9= Ava

The biggest climbers in Scotland were Luca and Maeve, and I certainly expect the latter to make a significant jump in the E&W data too.

Let’s have your predictions, please!

Just top 10 or beyond?

I think Noah and Olivia will both still be top, but with Arthur and Isla close behind.

Boys top 10 to stay stable, girls tend to swap around a lot so I think Mia and Florence could be on their way out, Sophia and Rosie back in (just based on what I hear around here).

Harper will be pushing for top 20 now, maybe Matilda too after the release of the musical film. Aria, Luna, Mila, Hallie, Mabel, Iris, Maeve, Lyra all continuing to rise significantly.

Biblical boys names will continue to be in favour. I think Reuben, Caleb, Ezra, Elijah and Jude will all continue to rise.

Nature names, vintage names, ie/y short forms and surnames as first times will all continue to be major trends.

Predictions for England/Wales stats by the way. I have no idea what's popular in Scotland right now.

I also think Maeve will be a big climber. For boys, I think August will see a reasonable increase.

Other names I think will see rises based on what we see on here and what I hear around here:

Orla
Lyra
Mila
Ada
Delilah
Margot
Mabel
Iris
Clara

Theo
Arlo
Luca
Teddy
Hugo
Jude
Ezra
Felix
Otis
Milo

I have a feeling they'll be later than ever this year. It still says 2022 data due August/September 2023 (provisional) at the top of the 2021 stats but this was eventually pushed back to early October the previous 2 years after showing as August/September provisional for so long and I'm sure by now an exact date was set on the release calendar, with the October push back already confirmed.

The fact it's still not showing on the upcoming release calendar suggests to me that it definitely won't be August/September now, more like October/November. We shall see but it does seem to get later and later every year.

Yes, I’ll be surprised if it doesn’t break the top 50 (#57 in 2021).

I think Amber will have fallen out of the top 100.

I also think Polly will have climbed quite a bit. I don't think it will be in the top 100 yet but I do think it will be heading that way.

I predict that Margot will be high up when the 2023 figures come out, Frank seems very popular on here, so I think that will be in the top 20, although maybe it will be lower because the babies might be registered as Frankie, Francis or Franklin

I think Isla will be the second most popular name, replacing Amelia too.

I'll be shocked if Charlotte isn't in the top 10 this year! Cannot wait

KirstenBlest · 03/09/2023 20:33

@faban , I doubt that it will be. I reckon it will be about #30. It's always popular, it's nice. Alice seems popular on here so maybe that will have gone up a bit.

Maybe itl be higher in the regions. I'm in SW and every other baby is called Charlotte. I know 4 just born recently!

I think Arlo, Milo, Ezra, Felix, Rudy and Jude will all see rises. Girls Ottilie suddenly seems to be popular so I reckon that will have a fairly big rise.

It’s the 2022 data that we are waiting for! There will be regional breakdowns in the full dataset.

No, but the next one will be 2022, @faban

According to the ONS page, there were fewer than three Charlottes in my area in 2021, compared with 9 Olivias. For the same year and area, there were 56 Muhammads and 17 Noahs. Nationally, Noah was #1 and Muhammad #5.
This is out of 1038 girls and 1078 boys born. *

I remember moving from one part of the country to another and the children's names I heard when out and about were different, but I'd moved from the outskirts of a large city to a small affluent town.

You don't need to apologise @faban. Charlotte is lovely. I wouldn't use it but that's because one of my cousins did.

Does anyone know when the stats will be released? I tried checking on the Office of National Statistics website, but for some reason I can't access the site.
