Would you go against your DP and register a name they don't like?

Hello, our baby boy is 4 weeks old and we have still not managed to finalise his name! Me and DP have absolute polar opposite name styles and it has been a nightmare trying to find any compromise at all. When we think we are compromising, the other just doesn't like the name enough so we are left with a name neither of us really like.

I'm at the stage now where we do have to register his birth, I know we have a couple weeks left but I don't want to leave it until last minute to have his decided name and it's already feeling very last minute with him being 4 weeks.

Would it be wrong to say "look, we are never going to agree and I have to register something and one of us may as well love it" and then he will in the end love it because it is his son's name? Or is that just asking for a relationship breakdown. Not sure what to do!

Yes! Brody is really growing on me... DP is very much sold on it as well he is rather keen and thinks it's a name we both may actually end up loving once he is named it. I also like that it's short and nickname sounding while actually being a full name because we are using a double surname. The fact it's routes are Scottish/Irish and not just some American name but also seeming like it for DP's sake lol

Brody isn't nice, it reminds me of the cop from jaws who run his fingernails down the blackboard.

Malakai looks like a yoonique spelling. Would you pronounce it like Malachi?

I wouldn't just grab at a name, take another day or two and mull it over.

Corey might work but maybe a bit 80s

RosannaJP · 24/08/2023 20:24

Oh no Grin both our top options are now being disliked hahaha this is a nightmare. Yes it would be the same as Malachi which is what id obviously pick but I'm trying to meet him in the middle

I like Cody, Brody and Bodie.
I'm sensing a theme.

Honee · 24/08/2023 20:29

My neighbour has a Bhodi

cherryassam · 24/08/2023 20:30

I like Brody well enough, and what is most important is that you both like it!

If you like Brody you might also like:

Brogan
Callan
Calhoun
Conlan
Finley
Grady
Lennox
Maxwell
Ramsay
Regan
Riley
Rory

We have a Brodie, he is 23 , I still love his name. I do know a Brody too who is 3. I prefer the ie spelling but it’s up to you, we always have had lovely comments about his name.

please don’t spell Malachi with a K it just doesn’t look right.

my friend has a Cody.

RoseHarper · 24/08/2023 20:40

Love Brody, suits all ages, baby, toddler, adult, feels like a proper name but sounds fresh and modern.

Calmdown14 · 24/08/2023 20:40

I don't think Broady spelled with a Y is much of a problem (and I'm a person that hates made up spellings!)

It's less of a compromise than many and about 50% of people would probably spell it that way however you decide.

It's hard without knowing your surnames but I think with double barrelled a short name is generally better.

To me something like Broady Johnston Smith is balanced where as I like Malachi but it doesn't rolloff so easily (obviously we are just guessing what it is to go with).

Practice calling your son the name tonight and make a proper decision tomorrow.

P.s it's great to get a thread with proper updates!

MontyCCU · 24/08/2023 20:45

What about Kai?

Wrongsideofpennines · 24/08/2023 20:57

We took a week to name our son. Our daughter took 5 days.

I wasn't completely happy with our son's name. I felt like I'd compromised and for a few weeks I wondered if I could change it, and then another week where I pretty much hated it and couldn't bring myself to use it. And then he was unwell and admitted to hospital and I suddenly became fiercely 'this is my baby and this is his name' and now I love it. I can't imagine him as anything else now. It's one of the names you've mentioned a few times.

Gemini202 · 24/08/2023 21:00

Brodie/Brody is a great name. I would personally choose the ‘ie’ spelling. But in your situation it wouldn’t be a hill I would die on.

IAmKenough · 24/08/2023 21:22

Brody/Brodie is good. Go for it!

Samzzz · 24/08/2023 21:47

Brody is lovely. I like the Brody spelling best. My friend just also called her son Bodhi which I think is also really nice with a lovely meaning x

You are not going to find a name that is universally liked by everyone. You have enough of a task to find something that appeals to both you and your DP without worry about what a bunch of randoms on the internet think.

Daisybuttercup12345 · 24/08/2023 21:59

Definitely go for your names. His are terrible.
Edison?
Marshall?
Harrison?

Divebar2021 · 24/08/2023 22:24

Brody is nice. ☺️

Autieangel · 24/08/2023 22:42

His names are awful. Borderline Ltb territory.

Trying to think of a middle ground -

Saxon
Hudson
Ashton

Hard agree. I wouldn’t let half of MN name my hamster, let alone my kid!

continentallentil · 24/08/2023 23:11

No, you need to get the app that matches names or puts lists on the fridge

You both find at least one name the other can at the least live with, then you toss a coin for who gets the first name…

Next time swap

LilyLemonade · 24/08/2023 23:39

Brody, Cody and Malachi are all good.

What about
Lincoln
Lisle
Edan
Evan

babysharkdoodoodedoodedoo · 24/08/2023 23:58

Some of his names are awful - Acer?! How about:
Asher
Ezra
Caleb
Jonah
Silas
Zion
Just trying to think of biblical names (for you) with a more trendy vibe (for him)

minisoksmakehardwork · 25/08/2023 05:27

I know a Malakai, Kai for short. Perfectly fine name.

I loved using this site when finding names for my children. https://namerology.com/baby-name-grapher/. The visual of how popular a name was over time. It's an American site as well so you might find some names you both like.
