Would you go against your DP and register a name they don't like?

Hello, our baby boy is 4 weeks old and we have still not managed to finalise his name! Me and DP have absolute polar opposite name styles and it has been a nightmare trying to find any compromise at all. When we think we are compromising, the other just doesn't like the name enough so we are left with a name neither of us really like.

I'm at the stage now where we do have to register his birth, I know we have a couple weeks left but I don't want to leave it until last minute to have his decided name and it's already feeling very last minute with him being 4 weeks.

Would it be wrong to say "look, we are never going to agree and I have to register something and one of us may as well love it" and then he will in the end love it because it is his son's name? Or is that just asking for a relationship breakdown. Not sure what to do!

Or how about something like Archer? Trystan?

He has suggested Macaulay... what do you think? It's not my usual style but I actually don't think I mind it!

I'd go with that

TheWayoftheLeaf · 24/08/2023 18:08

You're right though his names are yikes! Like he's naming a dog or a film character who wears a leather jacket.

Hmm. What about:

Rory
Cody
Hunter
Asher
Mason
Wyatt
Ezra
River
Miles
Emmett
Finn
Damien

All American top 1000, a bit interesting but actual names with some classics in there

If it’s your surname that’s all that matters.

RiaOverTheRainbow · 24/08/2023 18:10

Mackenzie?

HorsePlatitudes · 24/08/2023 18:10

Ezra
noah

Katrinawaves · 24/08/2023 18:11

Malachy is the Irish spelling if it’s just the chi that he doesn’t like about Malachi?

Calmdown14 · 24/08/2023 18:15

Brodie is popular in Scotland. I like it. Nice for a baby and toddler but also an adult.

It's Gaelic for 'little ridge' or 'precipice' which certainly seems appropriate to your dilemma!

MontyCCU · 24/08/2023 18:26

Lorcan ( Irish version of Laurence)

MontyCCU · 24/08/2023 18:29

Means little fierce one or fearless one

dressedforcomfort · 24/08/2023 18:31

Some good suggestions from MNetters here. Gus is a solid, strong name.

Other compromise names:

Seth
Micah
Isiah
Cole
Miles
Harley
Ivor
Lloyd
Flynn
Fraser
Spencer

IAmKenough · 24/08/2023 18:32

Maxwell
Aiden
Milo

Macaulay is better than others your DP suggested so might be your best compromise!

DigbyTheDigger · 24/08/2023 18:33

I like Malachy and Brodie.

BernadetteRostankowskiWolowitz · 24/08/2023 18:44

What about Travis? It has that American feel, without being too odd.

MachineBee · 24/08/2023 19:08

Trystan can also be spelt Tristan and is a great name.

Fivebeanchilli · 24/08/2023 19:11

Spellings are very important to me but I think Malakai is not unreasonable.

Bestivalfun · 24/08/2023 19:12

Evander? Elias?

snackprovidersupreme · 24/08/2023 19:15

Aidan would be fit well - a proper saint's name with amazing history, but also fairly popular in America. Plus lots of different spellings for DH to consider such as Aiden. Good luck!

My ExH went and registered our firstborn before I'd even left hospital. We had it down to 3 names and during my CS he said shall we call her Ruth then. I was out my face on drugs at the time so agreed and whilst I recall agreeing afterwards I was getting my head around the name and seeing if I felt it was right.

Lo & behold he turns up at the hospital to visit us and says I've registered her birth. Not only was I still deciding on the name but he took away from me a very important thing of registering my first born

He didn't improve, he decided he was leaving me whilst pg with our second and finally admitted it 3 weeks before the planned section date. So again he stole happiness at the birth of a child.

Bookish88 · 24/08/2023 19:28

Would go with Malakai personally 🤷‍♀️

wlv12 · 24/08/2023 19:33

Brody is really nice!

BernadetteRostankowskiWolowitz · 24/08/2023 19:40

Ezra?

RosannaJP · 24/08/2023 19:58

We have been at baby names all day Grin this thread has been great to be honest! I think one of the most helpful things was pulling up a US based list and finding names from that actually. I think the things we are now finding hard is the spelling. I was liking Brody (he originally said Cody which I didn't mind either don't get me wrong I don't love it but I do quite like it) but then felt Brody was even nicer but now I know it's originally Brodie I think I'd rather that but then Dp finds that following girl spelling trends and it's just all put me off. Still don't mind Cody. Like Macaulay thought it was not bad but now all I think of is home alone. Malachi I like and the Malakai spelling is definitely growing especially as I sent a voice note to my friend and asked her how she would spell it if I told her that was his name and she wrote it Malakai Grin and Kai always reminds me of Hawaii and is a positive thing and not really a negative but then I'm always unsure of unique spelling but feel this is kind of not and probably the best bet. Don't know
