Would you go against your DP and register a name they don't like?

Hello, our baby boy is 4 weeks old and we have still not managed to finalise his name! Me and DP have absolute polar opposite name styles and it has been a nightmare trying to find any compromise at all. When we think we are compromising, the other just doesn't like the name enough so we are left with a name neither of us really like.

I'm at the stage now where we do have to register his birth, I know we have a couple weeks left but I don't want to leave it until last minute to have his decided name and it's already feeling very last minute with him being 4 weeks.

Would it be wrong to say "look, we are never going to agree and I have to register something and one of us may as well love it" and then he will in the end love it because it is his son's name? Or is that just asking for a relationship breakdown. Not sure what to do!

I love Asa, but isn't Acer a computer brand?

DigbyTheDigger · 24/08/2023 13:04

Have you tried him with Asher, OP? Lots of PPs have suggested it and it's lovely!

NyanBinaryJohn · 24/08/2023 13:15

Jonah
Boaz
Abel
Kane
Aaron
Ethan

Almost all biblical but strong sounding boy names.

Honee · 24/08/2023 13:20

Acer is a cheap laptop brand

NyanBinaryJohn · 24/08/2023 13:23

Acer is also a genus of maple trees/shrubs.

monsteramunch · 24/08/2023 13:35

How about...

Ezra
Caleb
Samuel
Benjamin
Ezekiel
Joel
Joshua
Noah
Saul

Don’t do this behind your partners back. Keep going til you find a compromise

NeedTheSeaside · 24/08/2023 14:01

@RosannaJP

there was a link further up to a list of all male biblical names why not use that to make a list of names you'd be happy with & see if he likes any of them?

friends had a baby they called Boston (I had to tape my eyeballs so they didn't roll furiously out of my head. But he soon just became Boston & made the name his/lovely.

i hated my best friends name choices for her two girls, but babies just make the name perfect (mostly). I don't think I could manage it with Balonz though. 😂😂

neighbours baby is Hunter (reminds me of the boots not A hunter)

And a type of tree.

RosannaJP · 24/08/2023 14:11

He thinks Asa will be misspelt and mispronounced and he doesn't look at it and even say it how it should be said and he has never seen it before etc etc so maybe I can't convince that then

I'm going to get him to go through the biblical names vs me because I like most of them and just see if there's any he's keen on

Samson he said about the Samsung brand as soon as I said it...

What about Harrison?

It's got the American/surname vibe for him, but is actually a very old English name. There were Tudor Harrisons.

FastBlueHedgehog · 24/08/2023 14:15

What are you calling the baby at the moment? Is there any nicknames you are using that could be developed into a more formal official name? I called both mine sausage so if that's the case with you I am not recommending that!

Busted2006 · 24/08/2023 14:23

I would try my best to find a compromise but if one can't be found I think you should pick.

My DH would let me have the final choice if it was causing me lots of turmoil. I feel for you OP it's a horrible situation to be in.

Boys name that I love;

Benjamin
Samuel
Elijah
Eli
Noah
Asher (Might work if you like Asa)

Unforgivable.

LylaLee · 24/08/2023 14:46

I think it's very selfish of a man who has gone through none of the physical suffering of pregnancy and childbirth AND who will have the same surname as a child to insist on the first name.

Pocketfullofdogtreats · 24/08/2023 14:56

Nicodemus nn Nico?

cherryassam · 24/08/2023 15:00

I think Asher and Micah fit both the vibes quite well

also:
Ari
Davis
Eli
Emmett
Ethan
Ezra
Felix
Jadon
Jesse
Jude / Judah
Jordan
Kenan
Linus

DuchessOfSausage · 24/08/2023 15:00

Isaac
Jacob
Caleb
All fine

Boston
Beckett
Gunner
Rocco
Not fine. They are IMO dreadful.

Just call the baby Samuel and be done with it.

Yoyoban · 24/08/2023 15:00

So he won't use Samson - a well known name, because of the differently named Samsung. But he wants to use Acer - an actual computer brand, instead of the well known name Asa?

I'm not sure if you're having us on, he's having you on, or he's just got a couple of screws loose (that's the nicest way I can think of to phrase it - it wasn't my first instinct)

Gemini202 · 24/08/2023 15:00

Acer is nice, like the tree

BaronessBomburst · 24/08/2023 15:09

Would he like Nathan? Nicknames Nate or Nat.
Micah is a good suggestion; fits both your lists.

Kilopascal · 24/08/2023 15:18

His names are all awful. However, are there any surname-y names such as Elliott or Franklin that you like?

Calmdown14 · 24/08/2023 15:57

I thought you were being unreasonable til I saw his list!

For a few from north of the border:
Sorley
Blair
Brodie
Lachlan
Logan

I'm sensing he wants a bit different but you want a proper name so wonder if traditional names that perhaps aren't as universal in your part of the country might have merit?

Calmdown14 · 24/08/2023 15:59

Or failing that agree that you name the baby and he can name the dog as all his choices would be more appropriate there!

Tabletable · 24/08/2023 16:15

Asa is an awesome name.
Jacob has a nn of Cuba in some countries which might be the kind of feel he’s going for.
Dexter
Saul
