Names you can shorten to Annie

We love the name Annie, but can’t seem to land on which ‘full name’ we like best - would love to get some ideas!

Annabel - current fave, but 2yo has a Baby Annabell who is very important to her, and not sure if this would be weird (admittedly it’s a short-term issue though, so not sure if I’m overthinking this!)

Anastasia - like this, but not sure if it’s a bit rogue if you don’t have any Russian / Eastern European heritage?

Anna - I like, but husband not keen

Annalise - we both quite like, but husband says it reminds him of Annalise Dodd

Any thoughts on these or other ideas would be greatly appreciated!

One of my all time favourite names is Anwen

QueSyrahSyrah · 25/08/2023 18:33

I've never known an Annie that's not just been Annie, including my great-grandmother, a friend in her late 30s and a colleague in her 20s. It's a lovely name in its own right.

In relation to your comment on Annabel, I once knew a two year old who was SO excited to be going to meet Thomas who was coming to join their family! He was absolutely heartbroken to learn at the hospital that Thomas was not a tank engine Sad

Casperroonie · 25/08/2023 18:47

Who's Annalise Dodd?!?!?!? 🤣🤣🤣

ANNAismyname · 25/08/2023 18:59

@RainbowFish4 Actually, niece is called Grace Anna.... all my names follow her name Grace. So Grace is her (first) name.

I do, however, like (enjoy) to make fun of my name by temporarily assuming authority at home 'to lay down the law for the little ones' as my late dad used to like to call me, 'the owner of the house', much to mum's amusement. Likewise, when the demands in the house become too much, I also like to declare 'this is not my house' lol lol to show, not my problem alone to solve. It all amuses mum.

I've just looked at my old favourite, the Irish census for 1911 (I'm supposed to be writing something - foolish me)

23,943 Anns

86,987 Annes

92,785 Annies

344 Annys

9,862 Annas

I'm sure the GB results are similar - history seems to be on Annie's side.

my82my · 25/08/2023 19:06

Joanna
Hannah
Out of your list I'd go with Anne or Anna.
Annie is a nice name on its own though.

Mumto6ac · 25/08/2023 19:26

Why don’t you just use Annie?

TequilaNights · 25/08/2023 19:34

Havanna

RugglesB · 25/08/2023 20:13

I know an Annie with the full name Melanie.

Meecrowavay · 25/08/2023 20:51

Anne but known as Annie.

Anwen?

laurajayneinkent · 25/08/2023 23:29

Annette
Angelica
or just Annie 🙂

MamaRopes · 26/08/2023 07:38

My one year old daughter is Anwen. A beautiful Welsh name. We called her Anwen knowing full well she’d be known as Annie. I get compliments all the time about the name Anwen - even by the nurse who was just gave her her last vaccinations.
Anwen responds to both names and there is no confusion there at all.

DacwMamYnDwad · 26/08/2023 13:47

My mum has four friends called Anwen! None are Annie. Plenty of -wen names used by 80+ yr old welsh women.

23AR · 26/08/2023 15:27

Ariane - Slightly biased as this is my name!!! Has become much more popular than when I was growing up, but still not enough that you will find lots of others with the name. I have only come across maybe 3 others, and a lady who told me it was her Granddaughter’s name. My Gran choose the name for me as it was an old school Avon perfume that she liked. Meaning: “most holy” Greek (derived from Ariadne), “silver” Old English, “very holy” French/ Persian. “Ari” has the meaning Lioness of God. I used to be told it was unusual 80s/ 90s, but has gained more notoriety with a certain celebrity, and receive regular compliments for it last 20 years or so. Whatever you choose, it’s always a good idea to think about how your child will wear the name through all life stages, and how well the name will age. Best of luck x

I’m an Annabelle known as Annie. It has served me well.

MamaRopes · 26/08/2023 18:51

As someone who doesn’t live in Wales, Anwen is definitely not common here. I can be rest assured they’ll be no other Anwens in her class at school.
I just adore welsh names. They’re beautiful

ErinAoife · 26/08/2023 19:05

The only Annie I know her full name is Anne Marie. Personally, I think Annie is the beast, why do you want another name to shorter it to Annie, just go with Annie

Twazique · 26/08/2023 19:06

Anna is awesome, timeless and cool. Annabel too. But these are not Annies. I know an Anne and she gets called Annie. The Anna's and Annabel's don't. Just do Annie it's an awesome name.
