Names you can shorten to Annie

We love the name Annie, but can’t seem to land on which ‘full name’ we like best - would love to get some ideas!

Annabel - current fave, but 2yo has a Baby Annabell who is very important to her, and not sure if this would be weird (admittedly it’s a short-term issue though, so not sure if I’m overthinking this!)

Anastasia - like this, but not sure if it’s a bit rogue if you don’t have any Russian / Eastern European heritage?

Anna - I like, but husband not keen

Annalise - we both quite like, but husband says it reminds him of Annalise Dodd

Any thoughts on these or other ideas would be greatly appreciated!

It's literally got 'an' at the front of it 🤔

The Antigone I know (my DD), is called Tigs or Tiggy. It is the most common, but ultimately you can call your child anything if you want, I know a teenage lad who is John on his BC and absolutely everyone ( incl school) call him Bob. No idea why
So OP if you want Annie just go for Annie.

knobkopf · 25/08/2023 16:49

Just call her Annie and be done with it.
Why does she need a longer name?

EconomyClassRockstar · 25/08/2023 16:49

Another vote for just going with Annie. I know an Annie and it suits her as much in her 20s as it did when she was little. Plus, one of my kids absolutely hates their full name as they only ever got called it when they were being told off. Whoops!

Stanislava.

Sorry if mentioned, haven't rtft, but I know a Rowan whose name gets shortened to 'Annie' within the family.

diddl · 25/08/2023 16:58

What if you choose a "full name" & she wants to stick with that & not be known as Annie?

I understand wanting a grown up name. Annie is cute for a kid but it's like being called something like Millie. I'd want my daughter to have a name that gives her the option to be taken seriously in a professional setting as a grown up, so Anne or Camilla in the examples I've given

Good luck predicting what will make you seem professionally serious two or three decades from now.

Camilla?

Could well be like being a 30 year-old now called Beryl or Sylvia.

My full name is Rhiannon, but have gone by Annie in the past. Depending on how I feel and if young kids struggle with the pronunciation.😉

My mum was christened Anne and has been an Annie all her life

DeanElderberry · 25/08/2023 17:16

You're spoiled for choice there (I'd be traditional and go for Anne-known-as-Annie myself) but just to say that Anastasia was quite a common name in Ireland in the past (often shortened to Stasia).

OliveWah · 25/08/2023 17:16

I really like Anna, but agree with PPs that you could just go for Annie on it's own if that's the name you love, it's a great name!

We were strongly considering Anna for DD2, but our older DD gets called "Bea" as a nickname, and we were told that it would sound like our kids names said together (Bea and Anna) sounded like a banana! We used it as DD2's middle name in the end, but it's definitely still one of my favourite names.

I went to school with a few girls named annalea/annaleah. Annie is a huge family name in my family and all of them are full name Anne.

ImABox · 25/08/2023 17:21

Just Annie surely?
Why call her Anna on her BC to call her Annie in real life?

samuelclemens · 25/08/2023 17:23

Annie is fine. It works perfectly well for an adult or a child. I also don’t get the MN obsession with having a different name on birth certificate, especially ones where it takes a bit of a stretch to get the desired nickname ‘Lucy but Elizabeth on the BC’ type thing, THAT must be more annoying for the child when they get older.

Manon10 · 25/08/2023 17:23

Anthea?
To the pp with a daughter called Antigone, how do you pronounce that? I’ve never been sure.

Angrymum22 · 25/08/2023 17:27

It’s my nickname. I’m actually an Anne but have always been called Annie. My full nickname is Annie Babes, I know, but I have always looked younger than I am and at Uni it was the nickname I was given by my housemates. I was lucky, one of the other girls ended up with Gizmo.
When my niece was just starting to talk she called me “Amma”, which was confusing because everyone thought she was saying mamma.
