Aydin?

would your mind go straight to oh they’ve jumped on a trend bandwagon and got kreative with the spelling? Like nevaeh or heavenleigh?

Robin may be unisex but Robyn is more normally used for the female name

Exactly. If I saw “Robyn” I would 100% assume it was female.

Johnisafckface · 18/08/2023 17:48

I used to like it but now that I know at least three Aydins/Aidans/Aidyns I'm over it. It's trendy, but it's okay.

As would I with Robyn, I didn’t translate it to Aydin though as Arabic wise it’s a boys name

See I never knew anyone with the name but admittedly I don’t know that many kids… but now I’ve seen people saying the same thing

How do you pronounce Aydin then?

Nothing wrong with trendy names. If you like it, you like it.

I only know a handful of children and there are two Henry’s and two Emily’s.

PoshPineapple · 18/08/2023 17:59

I'd honestly think someone couldn't spell Aiden/Haydn!

Ladyoftheknight · 18/08/2023 18:03

It's not terrible, but it is a bit try hard. Aiden/Aidan are fine

I’m a very trendy 90s name actually haha

but we didn’t know it was trendy or know anyone else with the name and dh has a very large family. We chose it as we thought it would be easily pronounced and had a nice quranic meaning

How do you pronounce Aydin then?

The Turkish name it’s like eye din
and the Arabic one is ay (like eh) din

I understand. I think you should name you child whatever you want, regardless of how popular or unpopular a name is. As long as you like it, who really cares? We can't all like the same things.😊

Ordinarily I’d agree but I’m now quite worried my kids will either be greatly hindered by their names and or bullied because of them

Looks like someone's picked a name from the character lists of Star Wars Episode 10: Revenge of the Feeble Wristed Edge Lords In Lycra or some such.

Precisely my worst fear

I’d hate to hear your thoughts on my daughters name

Hidayah

I think people should name their offspring with the fact that those offspring will be adults for far longer than they'll be kids with cute and different names.

A friend of mine wanted to name her daughter Pixie Bear Faerie... The dad pointed out that it's be cute as a baby, but for a 50 year old Dr, Judge, Lawyer? Maybe not..
The MP for Haversham The Right Honourable Pixie Bear Faerie Smyth.. 🤪

Hopefully Aydin isn’t in that league

I like Hidayah, But I know the word...

It's the name of a LGBT org.

saraclara · 18/08/2023 18:27

I wouldn't assume it was a yooneek spelling, as I've taught several Aydins. But I wouldn't pronounce it Aiden. If pronounce it as Aydin is pronounced.

If you or he want it pronouncing Aiden, you'll have a job on your hands.

but I’m worried people will treat my kids as if they’ve got some made up slightly daft name

How would you pronounce it? It’s not so much as wanting it pronounced bouquet when it’s bucket it’s that’s actually how it’s pronounced lol

To be honest, I started to read the thread thinking "yeah it's someone trying to be different"

But I've read the comments and because of that I've read the name a few times, especially with the phonetical pronunciation you and others have given I think I got my mouth around it, and actually I think it's a lovely sounding name.

Dh and I went with the American spelling of our sons name because it looks nicer written down with a y instead of an i. We have no American connection, unless you count mu brother living there.

You've named your child a name you and your husband like, I don't think there is anything wrong with that. I work in a school and I've looked a children's named and though "okay then" but then I've met and worked with the child and the name fits.

peelyjuice · 18/08/2023 18:33

But as these threads always show, there are a lot of people who can't tell the difference between a name from another culture and a youneek one

This, don't ask her as for some reason the people on this board don't have diverse circles
