Aydin?

would your mind go straight to oh they’ve jumped on a trend bandwagon and got kreative with the spelling? Like nevaeh or heavenleigh?

Its nice, I haven't seen it written down before so I would have pronounced it ay-din rather than Ayd'n like Aiden

SM4713 · 18/08/2023 16:45

Too late, the ink has already dried.

Well what the heck was the point of the thread then??? 🙄

I'm not familiar with the name, but read it as a misspelling of Aiden. For someone like myself who isn't familiar with the Turkish city, it comes across as parents who are trying to have awkwardly different spelling to be different.

If you are really worried would you consider something like Adam, Idris, Zak that’s good in both languages? That’s what I did with my dc although I’m not Muslim so it may have been easier,

Would mean changing his name and passport and all of that, he also knows his name, I thought the name was ok but I’ve seen it poked fun at recently and it’s worried me that we’ve basically hindered him for life. The irony is we tried to have an easily accessible name

^ hit send too soon, I wanted to spell his name Aiden but Dh wanted it closer to the Arabic which is Alif with a Hamza (which as an a like apple sound) a ya which with the alif makes an ay sound and then a daal with a kasrateen which a d sound with an in ending. أيدٍ hence Aydin… but I was worried it would read as yhooneek to a lot of people

I'm a linguist and a teacher and have taught many students from lots of cultures, including lots of Muslims. I don't think I've met an Aydin. If I came across someone seemingly of white, British descent called Aydin, I admit I would probably have assumed that it was a unique spelling of Aidan. If I had any reason to think they were from a different country or culture, I'd assume it was a name from that country/culture.

So he has a ‘foreign’ surname but is very white appearing… blonde hair, slightly golden in the sun but v fair- so he walks both lines from the sounds

but even if you thought it was unique, would you think it was yhooneek or tragedeigh?

Oh that’s fair enough OP, I assumed he hadn’t been born yet! People can be so ignorant regarding names, particularly ‘forrin’ ones. If you don’t already I’d just tell them DH is Muslim so it’s a Turkish name. Maybe as time moves on and your dc ‘looks Arab’ people won’t be as judgemental. I find because I ‘look like a Jew’ oftentimes people are slightly more respectful of my name.

No it’s Aydin but pretty much pronounced the same

So it is Aidan.

So it is Aidan.

No it’s Aydin… the ending is more in than an but it’s very similar to an anglophone

aidan in Arabic is a unisex name meaning cool breeze I think
Aydin means powerful

they are different names

I don’t usually comment on baby name threads, but why not go with ‘Aidan’ if it’s pronounced exactly the same?

I don’t get it.

He’ll go through life having his name mis-spelt because people hear ‘Aidan’, or having his name mispronounced as Eye-din.

Because her husband wanted something that represented his heritage, and broadly speaking it's also a name that phonetically wouldn't trip up an anglicised ear/tongue?

Cauliflowersfloofy · 18/08/2023 17:21

I wouldn't have known it was Turkish but I'd have assumed it was a non-British name just by reading it. But if it was being screamed across Tesco by a Vicky Pollard lookalike, I'd assume (rightly or wrongly) it was a made-up / yooneek name!

They are two different names Aidan in Arabic is a unisex name meaning palm tree (correction from my earlier post where I said it was breeze) and that’s written عيدان the a here is a ayn which is a much harsher a sound and the ending is a proper an sound.
Aydin is أيدٍ which more like ay-din

Aiden is the boys version

The boys' version of what?

Ayden

I associate the name as having Irish origin / seen mostly by me in north east England catholic communities

Echobelly · 18/08/2023 17:32

Yes, it may have a similar problem to the boy's name Milan. As in the slavic name pronounced 'Mee-lahn' - I liked it (and have slavic ancestry), but DH and I figured people would think it was pronounced like the Italian city, which would unfortunately sound kind of like a trashy idea of a 'classy' name.

Cinateel · 18/08/2023 17:36

I don't like it, but I don't like Aiden/Hayden either.

Changing an “i” to a “y” can feminise a name e.g. Robin/Robyn.

Robin is unisex name though

Robin may be unisex but Robyn is more normally used for the female name
