Aydin?

would your mind go straight to oh they’ve jumped on a trend bandwagon and got kreative with the spelling? Like nevaeh or heavenleigh?

Here

Walkingtheplank · 18/08/2023 18:39

You've asked what people would think and they are giving a range of thoughts.

I'm not sure why you are correcting them - they are literally telling you their thoughts as requested.

My two-penny worth is that I would assume the Ay is like Hay and the din is like the word din, even with a middle eastern surname.

If you had a British surname I'd assume you'd gone for a 'u-neek' name.

I’m not correcting peoples assumptions but explaining why we didn’t just call him Aiden or Aidan or explaining the name rationale

But as these threads always show, there are a lot of people who can't tell the difference between a name from another culture and a youneek one

This, don't ask her as for some reason the people on this board don't have diverse circles

Sadly that’s the point though, I think a good number of people in the Uk would think the same. I’ve never really had a positive reaction to his name which is sad but not really the main concern, it’s maybe being stigmatised or bullied

this name was dh and I mutual 2nd choice we both disagreed on each others first

I feel absolutely awful saying this but I will anyway:

If your DS appears non-white/ of mixed heritage, then I wouldn't bat an eyelid. It's an Arabic name.

If your child is very white looking, and particularly if you were lower class, then I'd assume that you were looking for a unique spelling of Aiden and think it silly.

He’s very fair and with sandy blonde hair 😭 not sure if you’d assume I’m lower class, I look a bit of a tramp as I wfh but equally I’ve been told I sound posh

^ but he is mixed with a very non white surname

Sadly OP you are correct in thinking that a certain proportion of the population will judge people with names that are outside their personal experience. My DH is of mixed heritage and he and his siblings have all been teased about their names at some point. As a result we were careful to choose very "ordinary" names for our children. I do like all their names but I sometimes wish I had been bolder and picked names more in keeping with DH's family background as really the people who label names as "chavvy" or "try hard" etc when actually they are simply not English, are just showing their own ignorance.
I wouldn't worry too much about Aydin though - I think a lot of people will recognise that as a Muslim name, especially if your DS's surname is also not typically English. I live in a part of the country which is not very diverse at all and even I have met a couple of Aydins so I would think people living in areas with a more diverse community will recognise it. It's a name that obviously you chose with care so don't let other people's opinions worry you too much.

Mojodojocasahaus · 18/08/2023 19:33

I think it’s lovely but if you are looking for it to be pronounced “Aidan” then he is going to spend a lot of time correcting people.

In any case that’s his name, no point wasting any time thinking about it now, enjoy your babies!

saraclara · 18/08/2023 19:36

HaveImadeabooboo · 18/08/2023 18:30

How would you pronounce it? It’s not so much as wanting it pronounced bouquet when it’s bucket it’s that’s actually how it’s pronounced lol

The Aydins at my school were Ay-din. The Aidens I know are Ay-dun.

It’s more Ay-din rather than Ay-dun or Ay-Dan is that how you’d read it?

I've seen the argument that people on MN do t know the names because they're uncultured etc etc.

But no one knows every culture and every name therein.

Having a name from another culture whilst being raised, living and working in another country will often bring about questions.

But, it actually helps if it is an actual name.

"Oh hi, Aydin, that's a different name?"
"Yep, it's Turkish and means Enlightened"
"Cool.. that's nice .."

As opposed to:
"Oh Hi SponglethorpeHoopenDinklage, That's a different name?"
"Yeah, my mum wanted to be 'different'... let me spell it for you...."

MorningMoaner · 18/08/2023 20:26

No they don't. But that's not the issue - people making assumptions are the problem.
For instance
"Mercedes...that's not a common name. Where does it come from?"
"Oh, it's very common in Spain actually, but we pronounce it Mer -theh- dehs. "
As opposed to
"Ha ha ha. Fancy calling your kid after a car. What a chav."
Not knowing something and asking a question is very different to thinking you know it all and making fun. Unfortunately people with non English names often encounter the latter.

I would pronounce it Aye Din just from reading it but as soon as you corrected me I would pronounce it as you wished.

I'd feel sorry for them having a lifetime ahead of them spelling it out every time they need to talk to someone on the phone to book a restaurant or sort out an account. Just spell it properly.

I think it's a really nice name. I wouldn't think anything in particular if I saw it written down. There are millions of people on the UK with non traditional English names. Me in included.

Asking about names on Mumsnet attracts the type of poster who cares/judges about names which isn't surprising because the whole purpose of posting about a name is to get other peoples opinions. However, in normal life no one actually cares unless it's a crazy silly name and even then people get used to names very quickly.
Having said all that I think Ayden is a really great name. I like Aidan too but your spelling looks nice.
No one can spell or pronounce my name. It's literally never been an issue. I get asked how it's spelt and pronounced and sometimes people misspell it or mispronounce it and life carries on! I don't care at all. If anything, I find it a little bit funny. Not everyone is as uptight about names as some of the posters on Mumsnet.

How melodramatic! I have to spell my first name and my surname, it's hardly a hardship.

This.

I have a "traditional" name but it's not very common where I live, it is spelled traditionally but people still spell it incorrectly. Yes it can be annoying but it's really not that serious.

I’d hate to hear your thoughts on my daughters name

Hidayah

Well you've not made her life easy have you?
Poor kid. She's not going to have fun in the playground.

8DPWoah · 18/08/2023 21:51

Not one I've come across yet but I wouldn't think of it as a UnIqUe name as the name that it could have been derived from- Aiden, in my head- is perfectly sensible and therefore not the sort of name that usually gets the wankery treatment.

I think it's a nice name, I'd assume it was Middle Eastern until I was told otherwise.
