Aydin?

would your mind go straight to oh they’ve jumped on a trend bandwagon and got kreative with the spelling? Like nevaeh or heavenleigh?

I always thought Aydin and Aydın are two different names, pronounced differently. Is that wrong?

From Googling it's a place in Turkey so not sure if it's a traditional name in Turkey. To UK ears it sounds like Aidan with a SE/estuary accent

It is a common name in Turkey but although spelt the same we’ve gone for the Arabic name meaning strong powerful and able so it’s pronounced like the Irish name Aidan

I’ve just seen your updates re DH being Muslim, I wouldn’t assume it to be a ‘youneik’ name in that situation however I would worry about a lifetime of your dc being called Aydin.

No you’re spot on… the first is the Arabic name like Aidan and the second is the Turkish name like eye din

Is a life time of being called Aydin bad?

It’s a pretty popular Arabic name. I know two. Very normal name

Just call him Aiden and save him the chew of having to spell it out for people for the rest of his life.

I’d assume your dc was Turkish or had a Turkish or had Turkish parents. If you aren’t Turkish/Greek/Middle Eastern I’d go with the Aidan spelling. Even if it’s pronounced slightly differently British people will called your son Aidan anyway (from experience of having a ‘foreign’ name that looks like a British one).

Not to be all high and mighty but you should definitely correct people on how to pronounce your name. Every single time.

or mispronounce John to make the point. It’s so rude and lazy

Jobsharenightmare · 18/08/2023 16:05

If it were Turkish it would be Aydın not Aydin. It's spelling and pronunciation is not an "I" of the English alphabet.

Yes, it’s the Arabic name although to an anglophone they look the same

Oh sorry op Aydin isn’t bad, I meant to type Aidan!! It might be annoying having to constantly correct people that it’s Aydin not Aidan.

You shouldn’t be worried it will be fine. All the aydins I know have normal lives and jobs.

Ones even in govt.

names with meaning and heritage are beautiful. In my culture we believe that every time your name is said we speak the meaning over your life. A mini blessing.

so much stuff about names is wrapped up classism and fear of the other. Better to be 1 Aydin than the 7th Paul.

It’s ok lol, they are pretty much pronounced the same, what worries me more is the younique thing

people have laughed at my daughter’s name too, I think it’s worse because they see me as the mother so can’t comprehend that they may be Muslim kids and just assume I’m kre8ive

Does he have an obviously "foreign" surname? People are less likely to think it's just a unique spelling if he does.

Yes he does but honestly him an his sister are met with grimaces on hearing their names, i think it’s because they’re not exceptionally common like Aisha or Mohammed so the assumption is younik

No it wouldn't. But that's because I know someone with that name. He's Turkish.

If you are really worried would you consider something like Adam, Idris, Zak that’s good in both languages? That’s what I did with my dc although I’m not Muslim so it may have been easier,

SpamFrittersYouSay · 18/08/2023 16:37

Auden is not a unique name. Altering the spelling looks like you're trying too hard.

One thing I will say, 'Ay' is that many people try to pronounce it like 'eye.'
I know , as I have these letters in my name, and the fact that your spelling is different to Aiden might make people think that it's pronounced differently like Eyeden.

Don't be that person who thinks that by changing letters a name becomes yooneek.

TallerThanAverage · 18/08/2023 16:39

A coworker told me that her first grandchild had been born, a girl named Nevaeh. She then told me that it was heaven backwards. All I could say was that she would never get a key ring in a gift shop.

Doyoureallyhavetoask · 18/08/2023 16:42

No, it's a lovely name. I used to live in the Middle East though, so recognise it.

But that the Arabic spelling but your reaction is basically my worry

how we’ve spelled it it the anglicisation of the Arabic which is أيدٍ

Read the thread, this is clearly not the case. The OP hasn't changed any letters for a start.
