DP suggested it but I think it's awful! Look dreadful lol and would condemn our poor DD to a lifetime of having to say "it's same as Elsie but spelt.... ". Argh!

Fucking ridiculous- bordering on child abuse.

Silly DH.

FFS!
As a registrar if you came register with me, I would be saying "what? And how are you pronouncing it? And why are you spelling it that way?"
I mean, I can't refuse to do it, but seriously....why would you?!

I have a less common spelling of a fairly common name (nowadays, wasn't popular 40 years ago!) and it's annoying having to spell it.

Out of curiosity, could I ask if it would be possible to name a kid "doctor"? lol Sorry it's just come up in conversation. As in Doctor Smith or whatever with Doctor as the first name.

amusedbush · 25/07/2023 13:46

That's one way to use a bad hand in Scrabble, I guess.

FatherJackHackettsUnderpantsHamper · 25/07/2023 13:46

Tell him that he either comes up with some sensible suggestions, Ehllsyie gets no say in the matter!

In the meantime, 'encourage' him to start spelling his own name in a similarly 'yooneek' way immediately. "Yes, it's Mark - spelled Mh'aarckqüe". Agree with him that, if he doesn't receive a single raised eyebrow, snigger or negative comment in the next six months, then Ehllsyie it is!

Ofcourseshecan · 25/07/2023 13:47

Parents can’t protect their children from every bad thing that may happen to them in life. But why the hell would anyone saddle a child with a bizarre and ridiculous name that will put her at a disadvantage before people even meet her?

AnnaNims · 25/07/2023 13:48

Your husband must be a half-wit.

Middleagedmeangirls · 25/07/2023 13:48

DS has a very commonplace normal sounding name but it's not spelt as it is in the U.K. but as it is in DH's country of origin. It has been an absolute PITA. We were constantly having to correct the spelling thoughout his school life. He now uses an easily spelt abbreviation for everything but official paperwork.

ReluctantFishLady · 25/07/2023 13:48

Shounds slike Ehllsyie's been on teh syherrie hic.

AppleCrumbleDays · 25/07/2023 13:50

It doesn't make sense phonetically.

Twiglets1 · 25/07/2023 13:50

Just Say No.

Hayliebells · 25/07/2023 13:50

What on Earth is your OH thinking?!!

Pollyputthekettleonha · 25/07/2023 13:50

What on earth for?

Anniegetyourgun · 25/07/2023 13:50

My guess is he doesn't like the name Elsie so is making it as ridiculous as possible, so his wife will say oh, I give up, let's call her Jane (or something equally straightforward). You'll know I was wrong if he wants to spell it Ghayynne.

AutumnCrow · 25/07/2023 13:50

DS has a very commonplace normal sounding name but it's not spelt

Is it Einkorn?

StripeyDeckchair · 25/07/2023 13:53

Oh fuck off
That is one of the worst EVER

DinnaeFashYersel · 25/07/2023 13:53

It is absurd and ridiculous.

Elsie however is a lovely, classic name.

That would just make people think her parents are stupid, and in this case wrongly, they'd think it was more your fault than her father's.

I have a friend who's got a child with a weird name, I see people wince fairly often when they hear her kids names. I'd far prefer that people didn't automatically 😬 every time they heard my child's name, or saw it written for the first time

StaunchMomma · 25/07/2023 14:06

Apologies if I sound like a dreadful snob but, when teaching, I did assume chav tendencies from parents when I came across a bonkers spelling of a standard name.

I agree with you, OP. It's just setting DD up for a life of explaining pronunciation and spelling. Pointless, really. Plus it doesn't even spell Elsie! There's a really bizarre double ee thing going on.

Just no!

diddl · 25/07/2023 14:07

I hope that this is for a hypothetical baby & you can easily ltb!
