Loki

Is Loki a good or bad name for one of our triplet boys?

DH and I jokingly names one Loki because in scans he's always playing up kicking the others, refusing to be measured or simply hiding half of himself! But the name has stuck and DH wants it on the list for names.

I know of the name Loki from just being me but I think people would assume we are massive marvel fans. Neither of us have watched any of the movies or are that into the comic books. But using Norse hood names appeals 🤣

On a side note we are looking for names that are uncommon for boys. The little girl we have named almost (1st and 3rd name agreed) but boys are hard. They would have siblings called Theodore and Cordelia if that helps.

TIA

There are two Lokis, one in reception and one in nursery at my dc school - so not such an uncommon name anymore. I’d assume Marvel fans.

RestingMurderousFace · 05/07/2023 11:07

Not sure about babies but every other dog round here seems to be named Loki.

Fuck You Season 4 GIF by Friends

At first I wasnt sure about Loki but when you described him in the OP - he definitely sounds like a Loki and all of a sudden it feels lovely, warm and fuzzy!

There's some children's books called Loki and this is exactly how he'd treat Thor (in the books! Theyre boys who keep falling out) 😂

I love it!! Ours was a PITA in scans too and he was caught doing the Friends thing with his fists - we should have named him Ross 😂😂😂 but now he's 10 we're always doing it at each other in jest.

Scan memories are the best!

It's been a name I've seen suggested quite a number of times over the last 4-5 years - I only know of 1 cat and 1 dog named Loki. Theodore and Cordelia are lovely names - Loki send to me, FWIW, a lot less classy by comparison and not in the same spirit as there other two names. In short: I'm not a fan.

PickledScrump · 05/07/2023 11:12

I’m not a fan, I know of too many pets called Loki. That said I know of a boy called Odin so I don’t think those sorts of names are too unusual these days

allthecats1982 · 05/07/2023 11:18

@NaughtPoppy that's what I was thinking. People will just think we love marvel. I know it's not uncommon now as we looked at the tends online and it's quite popular these days.

@RestingMurderousFace I've not yet met a pet or person but I can well imagine it is popular.

@Hobbygoblininahat it's a name that suits him but I can't get it passed being the nickname we have now. He might be the sweetest and quietest boy when he's older and the name won't suit him.

@larkstar thank you for your complement on the sibling names. I like them. I also agree that Loki is not the same tone. I'm really struggling with boy first names though. Every one we suggest is just ok or we hate. They might just be called triplet 2 and triplet 3 forever as per their scan tags.

Just to add that DH is being useless at the name game and just makes random noises. I've warned him that I'll let DS name them and they'll be names 9yr old think are funny. We already have a cat called pineapple!

You’re pigeonholing them and tying their fate to the marvel character (or Norse god). Look what happened with all those kids called khaleesi. Why make them the black sheep with the baddy name in their triplet set before they’re even born?

KirstenBlest · 05/07/2023 11:36

Call them Bing, Joseph and Ross.

KirstenBlest · 05/07/2023 11:38

Or Hughie, Dewey and Louis
Or Shem, Ham & Japheth

AlyssumandHelianthus · 05/07/2023 11:41

The trickster god. I don't know the marvel reference but loki is a nice sounding name, with connotations that he would be a clever con man. Like the story of how you came up with it though. I knew a kid called Thor years ago and he was lovely.

FirstFallopians · 05/07/2023 11:44

No way- imagine being called Loki and your siblings have proper, really classic names.

To me it’s the same as like Sebastian, Clementine and ….Jayden.

There’s also the origin of the name- the God wasn’t just a mischievous sprite, but actually quite malevolent.

HugHog · 05/07/2023 11:52

What about using Lachlan and it could be shortened to Loki?

allthecats1982 · 05/07/2023 11:53

@KirstenBlest the triplets are two boys and a girl. We are fine in girl names and always have been. Even when our son was born we had girls names but nothing for a boy. I'm tempted to name them Alvin and Simon though so they're called Alvin Simon and Theodore!

@HugHog now that's something I didn't think of. I'll raise it at the evening dinner "discussion/no-fest" regarding names

@FirstFallopians I wanted clementine for a girl and my dad kept singing at me so I stopped that in its tracks!

allthecats1982 · 05/07/2023 11:56

@Weefreetiffany I know. That's why I don't want to run with it but DH loves it. If we settle on Loki he's going to be the exact opposite of his name probably. I need a nice little boy name.

SirChenjins · 05/07/2023 11:56

What about Lachlan, nn Loki? That way you get away from the Marvel/pet association.

SirChenjins · 05/07/2023 11:57

Xposts with @HugHog !

StillWantingADog · 05/07/2023 11:57

dh had Loki on his list (this was before the marvel films so not connected) but we both concluded it was a better name for a dog

allthecats1982 · 05/07/2023 11:58

@SirChenjins I know 🤣 I'll refer you to my reply!

Backstreets · 05/07/2023 11:59

Agree it’s a good name for a dog

StamppotAndGravy · 05/07/2023 12:10

Can't you pick something different and is Loki as a nickname? The full name doesn't even have to be similar because you've got a good story. An English trickster character is Robin Goodfellow if you want similar connotations.

allthecats1982 · 05/07/2023 12:15

@StamppotAndGravy I like the name Robin and it would be an easy sell potentially as DH wanted Locksley as a first name but to be called Robin.

Weefreetiffany · 05/07/2023 12:20

I mean, you could go the other way and name them all after trickster gods- Loki, Eris and Anansi? there’s another thread where someone is questioning calling a daughter Lilith- could you do Loki, Lilith and Lucifer? If you’re goth/pagan enough? If you don’t believe in nominative determinism and all that jazz 😂
