Loki

Is Loki a good or bad name for one of our triplet boys?

DH and I jokingly names one Loki because in scans he's always playing up kicking the others, refusing to be measured or simply hiding half of himself! But the name has stuck and DH wants it on the list for names.

I know of the name Loki from just being me but I think people would assume we are massive marvel fans. Neither of us have watched any of the movies or are that into the comic books. But using Norse hood names appeals 🤣

On a side note we are looking for names that are uncommon for boys. The little girl we have named almost (1st and 3rd name agreed) but boys are hard. They would have siblings called Theodore and Cordelia if that helps.

TIA

I'm probably being thick but if you're having two boys, when they're born how do you know for sure which bit is the one you've seen kicking in the scans?

I was wondering this too!

allthecats1982 · 05/07/2023 17:07

@ChronicNameChanging because each one is separate and have been designated who is who. Triplet 1 is at the bottom and is a girl with a very low lying placenta, triplet two is the silly one and has an anterior placenta (and has tracked the biggest triplet so far on a consistent basis when he has allowed someone to measure) and triplet three is a small boy with a posterior placenta. So their placenta placements are meaning we can mark each one accurately and track them. The consultant said that helps when they're born because they'll try to identify each one as they remove them (they are going to be C-section because of my placenta previa risk).

They really do have to be named equally or you are setting up a very weird sibling dynamic. Giving one a name to live up or down to is bad enough for a singleton but for such close children you are really putting a huge burden upon the one with the “power” name. In addition I would be VERY careful of forming and telling “cute” stories like “you were like this ir that” in the womb and pigeonholing him as active/aggressive/ dominant. Children can be ruined by the expectations these family stories set up.

Landndialamrhf · 05/07/2023 17:26

I really think it’s a dog name and it doesn’t match your other names
what about other names that mean something similar, or identify him as quite ‘bold’
that way at least if he has a totally different personality when he’s older it’s a bit less to live up to, I think everyone knows the meaning of Loki though
I can’t really tell what your taste is, you said unusual, but you also have a Theodore which I think is a super popular name. Clementine and Loki feel incredibly different to me too, so I’ve just picked a few different names.

Aiden - fire
Cameron - crooked
Charles/Charlie - free
Gunner - warrior
Wyatt - strength
Enzo - ruler
Henry - ruler
Alaric - all powerful
Duke - leader
harvey - battle worthy

or a name that could possibly be made into Loki for a Nick name
Lucas?
lachlan?

AndrexPuppy · 05/07/2023 17:33

Triplets, how unusual. Lucky you.

Loki is a bit trendy for my tastes but you should name your children how you see fit (within reason, obviously).

lozrox90 · 05/07/2023 17:35

We have a Lachlan and he is known as 'Lachie' to us and his friends - same pronunciation but without the Marvel connotations!

TheFormidableMrsC · 05/07/2023 17:41

I only know dogs called Loki 😬

EmmaPaella · 05/07/2023 17:42

I know a Loki and had no idea it was a Marvel name. I think it’s nice. However I would not name my child because of anything they randomly did on a scan.

ForTheSakeOfThePenguin · 05/07/2023 17:45

The only Loki I have met was an unbearably spoiled child. The mum chose the name be cause in Nordic literature Loki is the God of Mischief, then let him live to his name.

I think that calling him Loki is pretty much like calling him Bandit or anything with negative connotations, I wouldn’t saddle a child with that. Sorry.

Except Loki is pronounced “loe kee”

Lindtnotlint · 05/07/2023 17:54

It’s not just Marvel, there is a very popular series of kids books called “Loki” (aimed at sort of 7/8 year olds ish). Worth being aware as will be in the school library/reading lists etc. you may or may not care but thought worth registering!

Mummy08m · 05/07/2023 17:55

It sounds like Low Key to me.

But then I'm also someone who hears Elodie as L-O-D and I think of ape-y eyes when my husband talks about API's (a random software thing).

CurlewKate · 05/07/2023 13:27

Remember you're not naming a baby and a toddler. You're naming a teenager, a middle aged civil servant and an old man.

Sage advice that should be copy and pasted into all the baby name threads!

ChildrenOfTheQuorn · 05/07/2023 18:27

Cordelia is an absolutely gorgeous name. Theodore is great (albeit very very common). Loki is a cat name. And unbelievably naff.

allthecats1982 · 05/07/2023 19:44

So Loki is successfully out! However my mum wants Persephone for a girl 😐 I know it's not her child but my DH now thinks this is a good idea.

We also like Gabriel as a boys name

OP posts:
Nickknackpattywhack · 05/07/2023 19:48

Personally I wouldn't -

"Loki is considered a trickster god, known for being neither fully good nor evil since his main aim was always to create chaos. Despite his father being a giant, he is still counted a member of a tribe of deities including Loki has also been considered a god of fire."

but it's your choice, of course.

allthecats1982 · 05/07/2023 19:49

@Nickknackpattywhack don't worry it's off the table!

Now looking at names neither of us like so at least we are part way to agreement

Sounds like low key... it's a hard no

PieonaBarm · 05/07/2023 20:02

We have a Tabitha in the family, which has grown on me to the point I now love it!

MIBnightmare · 05/07/2023 20:42

I only know one Loki . It's a no from me. It's not the young boys fault- he is the product of appalling parenting .. but for me the name will forever be associated to a violent , bigoted, almost feral child.

Watchinghurling · 05/07/2023 22:31

I actually prefer Loki to Theodore and Cordelia.

Fivebeanchilli · 05/07/2023 22:41

Oh I'm with your mom.
Persephone is gorgeous.
As is Gabriel.

user1492757084 · 06/07/2023 05:39

Theodore and Cordelia, Lachlan and ..

Not Persephone
Gabrielle
Philippa
Nancy
Alice

Atticus
Victor
Barry
Rupert

That's fascinating, thanks for explaining Smile I've only had singletons and hadn't thought of placenta placement being used to keep track of them.
