Hi

DH and I both like name Rebecca but I am wondering, is it very common for all Rebecca's to be called Becky or Becca? I'm not a fan of the latter two and not sure I'd call the baby Rebecca if the likelihood is the name will be shortened.

Rebecca is a classically beautiful name.
Roo or Boo can be used instead of the nn you've written.

SophieHope7 · 25/06/2023 19:27

My cousin is Rebecca and once she started school immediately became Becca.... I feel the same about Charlotte (not wanting it to be shortened although both Charlie and Lottie are very pretty). So we used it as a middle name which you could do with Rebecca.

NC to a very old username for obvious reasons! It’s my name. I do like it. It was incredibly popular in the early 80s and I usually assume any Rebecca is probably around my age! People do insist on trying to shorten it. I’ve never been a fan of Becky or Becca, people close to me call me Bex. I do insist on Rebecca for work (also Becky sounds stupid with my surname). Most people respect that but some people insist on trying to shorten it or call me Rachael 😬 I just persist with saying Actually it’s Rebecca.
It’s a nice name, means ‘Faithful wife’ (or ‘Knotted cord’. Plenty of options for shortening it, go with the least offensive one, it is inevitable 😂

Thank you all for replies 😊
It's just such a lovely name, shame people try to shorten it! 😬
I know only one Rebecca (30 yo) and everyone calls her Becca.

I think it's a lovely name and I know of several in their twenties. I do think it's very difficult to avoid Becca as a nickname in casual speech though.

Findyourneutralspace · 25/06/2023 19:38

I know a few Rebecca’s who are called their full name. Of course she may prefer Becca or Becky in the long run, but you can keep calling her Rebecca till she has her own preference.

Hotpinkangel19 · 25/06/2023 19:42

I'm an 80's child and every Rebecca/Rebekah I know is Becky/Becca/Bex.

tallcypowder · 25/06/2023 19:46

My sister is Rebecca never gets Beckie. It's always Rebecca. Bec maybe from me now and then but it has never been shortened to Beckie.

I’m a Rebecca and used to absolutely hate my full name when I was younger, it felt so formal and almost like I was being reprimanded. Most people call me Becky or Bec, I’ve never been called Bex or Becca. But as I am now much older I actually like being called Rebecca. I think whatever name you give a child it will inevitably be shortened by many. What is it you don’t like about the shortened nickname? I’m quite partial myself lol!

MagnoliatheMagnificent · 25/06/2023 19:53

I have a Rebecca, she's early 30's. She likes Rebecca or Becx but not keen on Becky. I call her Bunny..

When she was 5 at Rainbows there were lots of Rebecca's there weirdly but she's never had one in her class at school and I only know of a couple of others.
I'm biased but lovely name. I like the spelling Rebekah too although she would spend her life correcting people on the spelling!

Crucible · 25/06/2023 19:53

Lovely name. My name has only three letters. It still gets shortened......there is nowt you can do...

Partiallyclosed · 25/06/2023 19:54

Bexamundo the amount of times I’ve been called Rachael too, why? Is nothing like Rebecca!

drpet49 · 25/06/2023 20:00

All the Rebeccas I know are known as Becky. Personally I don’t like the name. It’s like the female Wayne

Nooooo
That's Waynetta.

A Wayne is one syllable too. Nothing like it.

Mochacino · 25/06/2023 20:05

I work with quite a few, all Rebecca except for the girl who calls herself Becky

ApolloandDaphne · 25/06/2023 20:14

I have a Rebecca and she goes by Becca and has done for a long time. She is 25 now.

ticketstickets · 25/06/2023 20:19

Its a lovely name but I am not sure the meaning posted above (to tie or bind) is accurate. It comes from the biblical name Rivka, presumably its an aramaic word since that is where the orginal Rivka was from. But if I post what the meaning of the name might be in aramaic you probably won't want to use the name. 😳EIther way the biblical Rivka/Rebecca was a pretty feisty person so a great name in my book.

Probably mixed up with Rachel since they are both biblical characters.

(Its also my name)

Matchingcollarandcuffs · 25/06/2023 20:24

I am a Rebecca and only try and call me Becky once! I was one of 4 in my tutor group, and there were 7 of us in my year of 250 odd, but only 2 Rebeccas, one Rebekah and the rest Beckys.

Matchingcollarandcuffs · 25/06/2023 20:25

And yes so often called Rachel!

I just think Rebecca sounds so much nicer 😍 Becca sounds a bit more harsh to me but maybe it's just me!
So weird that some Rebecca's get called Rachel's, it's a completely different name 😳

Rebecca is so refreshing.

I know one Rebecca, always Rebecca though, never shortened.

UnicornRocket · 25/06/2023 20:46

My name is Rebecca, I'm in my 30s. I've always quite liked my name and I always introduce myself by my full name. I've been called Bex, Bec, Becca, Becky but I never really mind as the nicknames are used endearingly. It has always felt like a strong, professional name for me and when people ask what nickname I prefer I leave it up to them to decide! It has so many variables to the name that it just doesn't bother me. Growing up, my family used the nickname Reb which no one else other than family uses which makes it more special.

jillmoan · 25/06/2023 20:54

My daughters best friend is called Rebecca, I call her Rebecs. I've never actually asked her if that's okay and she's never said anything, they've been friends since they were 6 and she has been a constant fixture in our house since then. It just kind of came naturally, 'hi rebecs' 'are you staying for dinner rebecs?' Etc, was never intentional.

Gorgeous name!! The Rebecca I know is Becca - she hates Becky. She hates the full name too, but that might change as she gets older.
