We already have a Matilda. What's people's thoughts on Zelda for a little sister?

Zelda Spellman

Legend of Zelda

Sounds magical and mystical. And not in a good way.

DuchessOfSausage · 23/02/2023 16:15

I quite like it

BuffaloCauliflower · 23/02/2023 16:16

I actually really like it

BreviloquentBastard · 23/02/2023 16:16

They'll be associated with the game for the rest of their life, but that's not necessarily a bad thing.

Robin Williams daughter is a Zelda and I quite like it.

SusiePevensie · 23/02/2023 16:17

Zelda Fitzgerald.

Thewizardssleeve · 23/02/2023 16:18

I like the name, but again it reminds me of the computer game or the Terrahawks.

PrincessHoneysuckle · 23/02/2023 16:18

Terrahawks.

Used to terrify me when I was a kid

averylongtimeago · 23/02/2023 16:19

To someone of my generation- Bunty or Judy reader in the 60's- it's "the Legend of Zelda".
I like the name, but if your not sure, what about Zilpha?

whattodo1975 · 23/02/2023 16:19

It's a cool name but the child wont thank you for it.

Supernova23 · 23/02/2023 16:36

Find if you want to name them after a video game.

ZeldasMum · 23/02/2023 16:47

My DD is called Zelda. I still really love her name and it fits her to a T.

It does out you as a nerd because of the video games😃, even though that was not the primary reason for me to pick it.

Reasons for me to pick it:

  • The pronunciation is exactly the same in both English and my native language
  • It's easy to pronounce, when you see it written down you know how to pronounce it
  • It is a very old and established name. Griselda has been in use since the middle ages, Zelda since at least the 18th century.
  • The meaning is dark battle, or strong woman, according to Wikipedia. It's also a Yiddish name which means blessed, or happy.
  • If it's good enough for Robin Williams, it's good enough for me.
  • Loads of really cool (fictional) women called Zelda. Zelda Spellman, Zelda Fitzgerald, Zelda Kaplan, Princess Zelda, and many more.
  • Not British, so Terrahawks doesn't mean anything to me. DH who is British didn't have the association either.
  • It has a bit of a witchy quality. Not a downside for me! Many of the historical Zelda's have been the outspoken, activist type.
MrsBunnyEars · 23/02/2023 16:51

I quite like it, but I’m not that brave. Zadie is on my list tho.

BernadetteRostankowskiWolowitz · 23/02/2023 16:52

I like it. Reminds me of Sabrina the Teenage Witch's aunt.

Beamur · 23/02/2023 16:55

ZeldasMum has sold it for me!
Cool, strong name.

Miriam101 · 23/02/2023 17:01

I love it, Fitzgeralds and all that. However it's a bit similar to Matilda to my ear.

kitsuneghost · 23/02/2023 17:05

Love it

MysteriesOfTheOrganism · 23/02/2023 17:07

I'd be ok with the name. My positive association is "Beautiful Zelda" by the Bonzo Dog Band - great song!

ZeldasMum · 23/02/2023 17:08

@Beamur thanks!

Will add that I have actually never played the game. I know enough about the game though to know that Princess Zelda is a cool character and not a bad association.

Zippidydoda · 23/02/2023 17:09

I think of the computer game first too.
However it’s a nice name.

Thefailinghousewife · 23/02/2023 17:10

I like it - chucking Zena into the ring as well!

LivingDeadGirlUK · 23/02/2023 17:11

I think its lovely but agree with PP its quite similar to Matilda when shouted up the stairs...

lauraslops · 23/02/2023 17:34

I did think this and being in my 30s I'm aware of the game but I really don't think many kids would be by the time this one's at school.

lauraslops · 23/02/2023 17:36

You do realise the name existed before the game right?

That's a bit like saying kids called Felix are all named after the cat food.
Or kids called Winnie are named after the Pooh Bear.

Zelda93 · 23/02/2023 17:38

Ermmm my car was called Zelda hence my username 😂😂

Zelda93 · 23/02/2023 17:39

That meant to say cat!!
