Kitty is a lovely name

DD1 is Abigail but always called Abbie, in part this was because her middle name ends in -ie as well and it didn't sound right two names with -ie. I love both names though.

I still have absolutely no idea what to call DB3, we are waiting to find out the flavour then we only have one set of names to argue about. Nothing is jumping out and wowing me and I don't want my childs name to be a compromise IYSWIM. I will be sitting here BFing/weaning her/him and she/he still won't have a name at this rate

Personally I agree with Hatrick et al ...I don't see the point in naming a child a longer name and then shortening it to the name you like. Unless, of course, you like the longer (perhaps more formal) version as much as the diminutive.

Seems silly to me ...

bluenosesaint · 08/02/2008 22:04

As for girls names ...

No, I don't like Paris either.

I like all your other choices, particularly Megan and Harriet. Others that I like are:

Isabelle/Isabella
Elizabeth
Rose
Charlotte
Emily
Lucy
Grace

Oooh I could go on and on ...

VictorianSqualor · 08/02/2008 22:05

I named DD Danni-Ella, ella for short, I HATE her getting called Danni, so when I named DS and wanted him to be called Bobby there was no way I was putting Robert on his birth certificate.
However we are looking at Alexander this time round, and will call it Alex (if it's a boy).
I think it depends if you like the full length version, I dont like Robert, or Bert, or Rob, just Bobby (after my dad).

mrsruffallo · 08/02/2008 22:07

VS-Why did you call her Danni- Ella if you don't like Danni?

VictorianSqualor · 08/02/2008 22:17

A compromise with my ex who hated Ella, but liked Danni-Ella (his brothers name was danny), she has changed it at school and everythign though, asks her teachers to call her Ella, cos she doesn't like Danni-Ella.

metoomaybe · 08/02/2008 22:18

why did you do Danni-Ella instead of Danniella

VictorianSqualor · 08/02/2008 22:20

So it could be shortened.
I think I was also very stupid and impressionable and at 19 beleived hyphens were cool. I like to think she'll forgive me.

Ah, she;ll soon forget her name is Danni-Ella, everythign legit says Ella except ehr birth certificate

violetsky · 08/02/2008 22:33

Victoriansqualor, or she could be like my mam and dad who both go by their second names. Their wedding cards are a hoot. Half say congratulations to delores and bob the other half say congratulations to christopher and alice. It is like two different couples got married.

violetsky · 08/02/2008 22:34

vs are you married?

VictorianSqualor · 08/02/2008 22:35

No, I'm not.

violetsky · 08/02/2008 22:37

hang on vs, something I read a couple of weeks ago could be relevant. i'll see if I can find it,

violetsky · 08/02/2008 22:40

Changing a child's forename(s):
If you only wish to change the forename(s) of your child, it is possible to have your child's new forenames added to the birth register, provided the new forenames were given either in baptism or by regular use within 12 months of the birth being registered. The new forenames may be added to the birth record after 12 months, but you will need to provide documentary evidence that the new forenames were in use within 12 months of registration. Upon re-registration, a new birth certificate can be purchased. Please note, a new full birth certificate will show both the original and the new forenames.
as stated on here

there is something else. but I haven't found it yet.

violetsky · 08/02/2008 22:41

vs look at this too. (same page as before)
Changing a child's surname from the mother's surname to the father's surname (parents married since birth):
If the natural parents have married each other since the birth was registered, the birth can be re-registered to show the child as a child of the parents' marriage. Upon re-registration, the child and mother's surname can be changed to that of the father and a new birth certificate can be purchased.

Don't go down the deed poll route until you have spoken to the birth registrar

Rolf · 08/02/2008 22:56

I have a Harriet (we call her Hattie)

I like Thea, either short for Dorothea or Theodora, but DH isn't having any of it.

ClaireSN1 · 08/02/2008 22:59

You'll either hate it or love it ... my little lady is Kiki (on her birth certifcate)

I was one of 6 Claire's in a class of 30 at school and it was horrid.

Paris is a beautiful city and the name IMO will come across differently as time goes by and will depend on their personality.

VictorianSqualor · 08/02/2008 23:01

I'm sure someone has already said but isn't Paris a mans name?

sweetkitty · 08/02/2008 23:18

I have a hyphenated name and hate it, not the hyphen but the name, two v popular 70s names put together, growing up I always got my full name wasn't until I was in my first proper job that I shortened it.

Problem is our surname as well names I like just don't go with it, it's only 4 letters only one syllable (spp) so short names sound daft.

doup76 · 09/02/2008 05:33

By the way, Paris is actually a boy's name.
(He was the guy that ran off with Helen of Troy in Greek mythology)

I am not a big fan of trendy names, I think something timeless and classic stands the test of time.....how about:

Marianna
Alicia
Grace
Alexandra
Georgia

lollipopmother · 09/02/2008 11:20

I won't be giving my child a shortened name myself, but a lot of people do and there's no right or wrong. I actually like long names that can be shortened, having a short name myself has meant I've never had a nickname, I always felt really left out at school (stupid I know!).

ConnieDescending · 09/02/2008 15:47

Not keen on Paris at all - but it does go rather well with Chelsea

Harriet is nice but not a great sibset either

Megan is rather dull and dowdy

What about:

Lola, Violet, Daisy, Seren, Willow, Lila, Poppy, Verity,
