Can we really name our baby girl this?

Hi all,

I am currently 8 and a half months pregnant, myself and DP have been going back and forth on names for a while until we agreed on this around 2 months ago.

The name we would like to use for our girl is Halo.

Our baby's surname will be Raye

Is it too out there? We both love the name but would love to know what others think.

With your surname it would be quite difficult to interpret when first introduced. As PP said, I wouldn’t know if you were saying a full name (might mishear as Hilary) or a hyphenated first name or full name. Whereas Halo Smith, I’d at least be able to identify Halo as the first name. I think with your surname a more familiar first name would work much better.

Sounds like something out of the next Star Wars film. Would give this one a miss.

It sounds like something you would find in a laboratory. Guy in a white coat saying "I can't quite tell, I'll zap it with the halo ray and see what comes up".

It’s not traditional, and Mumsnet is very traditional. I think the most commonly suggested names on here are things like Elizabeth and Catherine and Beatrice, which, while classic, are not everyone’s cup of tea and are terribly boring to some! Halo is a lovely sounding word and it sounds pretty with your surname. I am a teacher and can easily imagine this on a child, especially with names ending in ‘o’ becoming more popular. I like it and think if you love it you should use it. I’d also suggest going to another websites name board to ask for opinions because most name sites are less traditional and judgemental of non-traditional names than Mumsnet.

Don’t know if it’s been said but also, when people greet her it’ll sound like

Hi Hello

or

Hello hello

There are rumours that Molly Mae is naming her daughter Halo, so it might be about to have a surge in popularity that you might want to watch out for.

I dont mind Haylo so much but it doesnt really work with Raye. Its two 'things' so they sound like a product or sentance. If your last name was Johnson for examplw i think it would work better

If you have to ask 'Can we really name our baby girl this?' then the chances are it's going to be a resounding 'no'. Call her Hayley with the nickname Halo if you like it that much. No one wants an 'out there' name, would you change your name to Halo?

Because both ‘halo’ and ‘ray’ conjure up beams of light , for me it sounds like a sort of laser gadget. It wouldn’t be a great name on its own but the surname is the nail in the coffin, as PP have said , for a range of reasons. Sorry!

No. Please no. For the child's sake, no.

For everyone asking, we thought of this name over 2 months ago, so no it's nothing to do with anyone else's choice of name, I don't even follow mollie mae, we picked it out before someone famous,so not sure why you are all linking it to that.

Lots of PPs have mentioned "Hello Ray" being our pronuciation of that name. We probably come from all parts of the UK with a range of accents. If we're all thinking that . . .

Oh god now allI can hear is Sinead from corrie going

Everyone will think you named her after Halo Jones, but it's a cool name!

Untitledsquatboulder · 20/01/2023 08:02

I think it's a nice name but is very likely to be misheard and she would forever be telling people that her name isn't "Hillary". Speaking as someone who, since marriage, has a similar problem (my fault cause I chose to take his name but I really didn't see it coming) I'd strongly urge you to see if you can find another name you love. It gets tedious correcting people endlessly.

How about Honor? I also like pp suggestion of Helena. The three syllables makes it easier to distinguish the first name from the second name.

I wouldn't. Why don't you use it as a middle name? My DDs middle name is beautiful (well I think so!) but it's a bit hippyish/different and her first name is slightly more 'normal'.

Harlow Raye
Aurora Raye
I liked the suggestions of Hayley or Halle. Halle still has the hello ray link though.

That poor kid! Why do you want her to sound like a video game?

Sure, but where do you live? Is it in a city/area where kids are called things like Marvel or Persil or Leaf or not?
Also, she'll spend her life explaining she's not saying 'hello' but Halo is her name.
Halo Raye sounds like someone going, 'Hello Ray!'
