Can we really name our baby girl this?

Hi all,

I am currently 8 and a half months pregnant, myself and DP have been going back and forth on names for a while until we agreed on this around 2 months ago.

The name we would like to use for our girl is Halo.

Our baby's surname will be Raye

Is it too out there? We both love the name but would love to know what others think.

I don't like it, it's not a name.

'I don't even follow mollie mae, we picked it out before someone famous,so not sure why you are all linking it to that.'

Because you've picked a 'unique' name that some 'influencer' has chosen and made famous?

How about Honor? I also like pp suggestion of Helena. The three syllables makes it easier to distinguish the first name from the second name.

But that will sound a bit like 'Honorary'

What about Hailey? That has the same vibe but it means people won’t laugh at her.

This was my thought. Hailey Raye sounds nice (or Haley), it’s similar but doesn’t sound like hello or a video game.

Halo is bloody awful, especially with your surname.

Hero, or even Hera are better but again don’t go with with your last name unfortunately.

I like it, it’s pretty & unusual

I love it, but I think it's a bit tricky with your surname.

My first thought was Molly Mae too, and even if you thought if it first people will automatically assume that you copied them (if they do in actually name their daughter Halo). I dislike it even as a celeb name so I think to name your child that in a normal world setting is a little unfair on them. It's a big name to live up to.

How about Halen as in Van Halen

I think it's lovely. We named our daughter an unusual name (think day of the week/ month name not commonly used) and the only negative reactions we've had have been from older people. I don't believe a name sets you up for bullying, kids will find a reason to bully if that's what they want to do, and an unusual name can set you apart from others in job interviews etc. In fact I've been interviewing recently and a couple of unusual names definitely made the applications memorable. I think the whole 'traditional names only' thing is really outdated and when your child goes to school there'll be other unusual names too. I'd say go for it!

If she grows up to be tall and stunning and goes into the music industry or modelling then it will have been a fabulous choice. If she is more ordinary, with an ordinary job then she may well be saddled with ' Hello Ray' yelled across the factory/ shop floor for her entire life. Same with school really. If she goes to school in America she'll fit right in ( possibly). If she's at a state secondary in Britain her life may well be hell.

It's awkward to say with your surname, doesn't flow at all. Associations are either violent video game, or angels (doubled with the 'ray'). Yikes.

What about Hallie?

Report
saraclara · 20/01/2023 08:19

Too many Ay sounds in it for me. Two out of three syllables with the other also being a long vowel sound, doesn't work. It feels like a mouth exercise.

The surname is begging for a first name beginning with R.

I love it! It's a name I'd considered for a girl.

What about other names that are similar... Hallie, Halina, Hollie...

All the best with whatever you decide x

Makes me think of Kylo Ren. Are you married to George Lucas?

Sounds a bit daft to me but if you like it it's not for anyone else to judge

But Halo is a bit out there for me

What about Harper or Hannah or another "H" name?

Well I guess i'm in the minority. I actually like it. I wish your surname was a middle name, would be perfect. Halo-Raye.

CPL593H · 20/01/2023 08:27

"Halo Raye" sounds like a character in Star Wars.

I quite like it, young children have lots of unusual names these days and I don’t think it’ll be a big issue if you love it. Most MN posters probably have DDs called Olivia so will never like the name! (I like the name Olivia but it’s so overused now) I’d just say think of other names in case you think it doesn’t suit her when she’s here.

sounds like a video game and is also reminiscent of Kylo Ren… a bit star warsy

Halo Raye sounds lovely actually. If it’s true Mollie- Mae is choosing this for her baby I wouldn’t use it , nothing against Mollie, but it’s very unusual and I wouldn’t want the comparison being made all the time.
