Just out of interest really - is there a specific boy or girl name you just can’t stand?

Nevaeh. 'It's heaven spelt backwards'.
Janet.

As a teacher I would scan down the names of my new class, and my heart would sink if I saw Darren, Dwayne, Wayne or Dean.....

I like the name Ophelia despite reading Hamlet. I don’t think that would stop me from choosing it as a name.

Oh no, they haven't read Hamlet, will the world end??

Don’t worry, I will be able to sleep tonight knowing that some people may not have read Shakespeare’s entire back catalogue

but seeing as this is a thread about names that we don’t like- I don’t like it when people lumber their children with frilly, opulent names because they look a bit fancy when they clearly haven’t even bothered to look into the connotations of said name

ophelia is a tragic character. She is sweet and goodhearted, but mistreated, descends into madness and likely commits suicide. I couldn’t imagine knowing her story and thinking ‘ah! What a lovely name to give my beautiful new DD’

that was the point I was making. It was quite clear, but if you want to pretend it’s hysterical middle class panic so you can ‘FFS’ on a message board, then whatever makes you feel good, I guess

Connor I simply can't stand the name. Not made better by the fact 4 I've known have been awful.

Beth

GuiltyPleasure · 02/01/2023 01:03

Eric/Erica/Erika don't know why but to me it's just ugly and harsh sounding.
Also Alice, but that's only because I despise the only person I know with that name. She's ruined a perfectly nice name for eternity for me.

antipodeancanary · 02/01/2023 01:04

Kevin or Bradley for boys, Phoebe or Daphne for girls.

Jellyjunction · 02/01/2023 01:07

Violet

Every time I see it I misread it as Violent

Orphlids · 02/01/2023 01:08

Persephone. Actually, I quite like this name, but there was a little Persephone at a toddler class the other week whose mother was just constantly and unnecessary calling her name in a loud voice, and each time, she’d have a quick scan around the room to make sure the rest of us plebs had noticed what a superior name she’d chosen for her kid. By the end of the half hour, the name was forever ruined.

Haha I have a Persephone... but I'm not loud and people usually just hear Stephanie!

Philandbill · 02/01/2023 01:18

@Orphlids I've never been able to take the name Persephone seriously since a family member misread it on a pub quiz card as "Percy-phone"...
