Everest - too out there?

SaraAppleseed · 01/01/2023 20:48

My partner and I met while attempting to climb Mount Everest.

Fast forward a few years and we are now expecting. We love the idea of having a name linked to where we met and have pretty much settled on a boys name but we are finding it hard to think of a girls name.

For a boy we are going for Everett Archer (Archer being my maiden name).

My husband suggested just going for Everest for a girl but I don’t know if it’s too (out there).

She would also have the middle name Archer. Everest Archer?

Any comments or suggests on related girls names?

Ok, assuming you are being serious, do you know anything of the history of how the mountain came to be named? I am assuming I am saying what you already know, as you have climbed it. That there is a tenuous connection of the white man's surname that came to stand for this mountain, despite the other native languages with existing names - see Ayers Rock. It has also apparently come to be pronounced wrong.

I thought so too. It’s unusual yes but it’s a conversation starter.

If you really want to use it then please consider it as a middle name. You might like the thought of an unusual name, but your daughter might not want her name to be a conversation starter, hear constant references to paw patrol and unkind comments about Mount Everest.

What about Hilary, works for a boy or girl

QuiltedHippo · 01/01/2023 21:05

What about Mallory? Or Mallorie, love this name

OhBeAFineGuyKissMe · 01/01/2023 21:06

What about Mallory?

brokendownbyageandsex · 01/01/2023 21:07

It is a bit out there, but I quite like it. There's always Mallory for a less out there Everest connection

HeatAndEat · 01/01/2023 21:08

Double glazing, Want the best, FitEverest

And Paw Patrol.

It's a lovey sentiment though. But not a brilliant name
Imagine if your child is tall or chubby?

Everley

Everlie

Everleigh

Eve

123youandme · 01/01/2023 21:09

I really really like it, including the nickname Ever which has a nice origin and meaning!

BecauseICan22 · 01/01/2023 21:10

Also look into why the name Everest came about.

Perhaps look at some Indian or Nepalese inspired girls names that mean the same thing.

lottiegarbanzo · 01/01/2023 21:12

Double glazing. Maybe that's an old reference.

Also Paw Patrol.

Couldn't you be a teeny bit more imaginative and come up with something that references the place, without being so literal?

1000yellowdaisies · 01/01/2023 21:14

Sorry but my immediate thoughts are paw patrol and when your DC are older they will see that too....
Also you've said the name would be a conversation starter... that feels selfish. You are obviously hoping that will mean conversations about you and DH and how you met but that is going to become repetitive and dull for DD.

LaChatte · 01/01/2023 21:16

I went to uni (in France) with a girl called Everest. She was lovely, the name really suited her.

royalrecording · 01/01/2023 21:16

I love the name Everest. It’s one of the fastest growing new names in the US (very small base obviously).

I know of the Paw Patrol dog but don’t think it’s really so off putting, don’t think it would stop people using Skye or Ryder.

Imagine the lads at school joking that they'd like to mount Everest 😕

Craghopper1 · 01/01/2023 21:19

Named after the first white man to scale it; hard no from me. Plus it's terribly try hard.

Aerielview · 01/01/2023 21:19

Paw Patrol

SirChenjins · 01/01/2023 21:20

Paw Patrol or double glazing was my first thought.

Why does the place you met need to be a conversation starter?

MerryChristmasTree · 01/01/2023 21:20

Everyone will think you named her off of Paw Patrol. Names don’t have to be conversation starters.

Also, every other girl is called Evie.

EddietheEagle · 01/01/2023 21:21

Sorry no. Sounds awful. Why not just get a big photo of Mount Everest framed, and put it in your bedroom or living room. Please don't give this to your child as a name. It's horrendous and they will have to live with your 'out there' choice for the rest of their life, unless they decide to change it which will be a hassle.

Imagine them explaining it to everyone who asks them why they are called 'Everest' - so cringe.

EddietheEagle · 01/01/2023 21:22

MattDamon · 01/01/2023 20:53

George Lucas named his daughter Everest. Evie for short would be nice.

Evie is a completely different name. Just use the name Evie in that case.

WhileMyGuitarGentlyWeeps · 01/01/2023 21:22

EVEREST?! No FFS. Hmm Why can people not just give their kids NORMAL bloody names these days? You realise these kids have to live with these 'out there,' weird, offbeat, trying to be trendy/cool/bohemian/trying to be American names right?!

KathyBurke · 01/01/2023 21:23

Lulu2171 · 01/01/2023 20:56

Isn't Everest a well known double glazing company too?

Sorry OP, I think it'd be unkind.

This was my first thought too.

Blinkingmarvellous · 01/01/2023 21:23

Parvati is a sanskrit name meaning daughter of the mountain.
Everest would be a bit odd - possibly not great in times of sensitivity about colonialism?
Jael and Carmel are 2 Hebrew origin names referring to mountains. However Jael has quite a backstory. Not a woman to mess with

MerryChristmasTree · 01/01/2023 21:23

Call yourself Everest for a month and see how that goes.

Kids will sing the paw patrol theme tune to her.
