Everest - too out there?

My partner and I met while attempting to climb Mount Everest.

Fast forward a few years and we are now expecting. We love the idea of having a name linked to where we met and have pretty much settled on a boys name but we are finding it hard to think of a girls name.

For a boy we are going for Everett Archer (Archer being my maiden name).

My husband suggested just going for Everest for a girl but I don’t know if it’s too (out there).

She would also have the middle name Archer. Everest Archer?

Any comments or suggests on related girls names?

Nope. I too am old enough to remember Everest double glazing!

CPandme · 01/01/2023 22:23

Windows or paw patrol. I’m not keen on Everest. Unless you are are South Asian then your daughter may be asked the reason as well as spelling and meaning of an Indian/Nepalese name.it can get a bit tedious.

RamonaBadwolf · 01/01/2023 22:26

Mallory after George?

Basilthymerosemary · 01/01/2023 22:27

I only know it from paw patrol too!!

SleekMamma · 01/01/2023 22:30

Paw patrol, paw patrol, we'll be there on the double.

Squirrelsnut · 01/01/2023 22:31

I just think of windows.

CheerfulYank · 01/01/2023 22:32

I like it! But I’m an American and we name ours all sorts 😂 I think it’s sweet for a girl and Evie and Ever are sweet nicknames.

livingthesimplelife · 01/01/2023 22:36

Yes I'm afraid I find that name a bit naff...and also, the fact that you and your dh attempted (but assuming didn't summit?) Everest would make me feel slightly strange calling my child after something I didn't achieve?! Sorry OP!

Fivebeanchilli · 01/01/2023 22:43

I don't think it's naff to name your child after something meaningful to you. And I am someone with teenage children who constantly says on here that the potential for teasing is so much less than other people try to claim - but even I think she is guaranteed to get the "who wants to mount Everest?" joke all the time.
Sorry.
But I think Mallory would be a great alternative.

Charltonandthewheelies · 01/01/2023 22:46

Showing my age but I'd worry more about Everett... Kenny?

BreadInCaptivity · 01/01/2023 22:49

General advice.

If you're asking on a forum if a name is potentially a bad idea....the answer is yes.

The other point I'd make is that your child is a person in their own right.

Naming them after your achievements signifies a lack of hubris in this regard, especially in the context of it being (in your words) "a conversation starter" when every time they are asked about their name they have to glorify their parents.

So frankly a hard no from me.

Name your child something meaningful by all means, but don't saddle them with "your" story for the rest of their life.

All in the best possible taste!

Everest makes me think of an explorer with a tweed suit, plus fours, and a large bushy moustache.

MerryChristmasTree · 01/01/2023 23:33

It’s all a bit attention seeking really, isn’t it.

HedgehogB · 01/01/2023 23:36

I think of the double glazing company. Try Eve or Evan ?

Indeed.

No, definitely not.

I thought so too. It’s unusual yes but it’s a conversation starter.

Cute when they are a baby.
But what child/adult wants their name to be more about their parents story than anything about themselves? It's not even where they were conceived which I'm not a fan of, but at least it's about the person not their parents.

Thanks to everyone for your suggestion.

I must say though although most are constructive some of these comments are just downright insulting.

I’ve discussed with my husband and he likes the idea of Ever as a middle name for a girl and an alternative first name (possibly Mallory!)

You are naming a person for life. I’m in teen world at the moment have one low key Dd and one confident party girl and can safely say with some certainty they would both hate to be called Everest.

I came up with some mad names mid pregnancy when I tell my girls what names I considered for them they are absolutely horrified!

DanseAvecLesLoups · 02/01/2023 09:10

As a fellow mountaineer it is a terrible name to saddle a kid with. He might get away with it if he was to grow up to be a poker player on a Mississippi paddle steamer.

EddietheEagle · 02/01/2023 09:33

What comments do you find insulting? Are you sure it's not just because it's not what you expected to hear?

Why not Junko or Rebecca for your daughter - honour the women, not the men.

Which posts did you find insulting?

I like Mallory. Is is a girl's name or boy's though? Maybe it works for both.

If you want an alternative with a nod to Everest, how about Everly?

Lavenderfowl · 02/01/2023 09:48

There are lots of great women climbers , from Mabel Barker to Shauna Coxsey, so maybe you could try that for inspiration?
