Using a name family don't like

Has anyone used a name family didn't like? I really like a name Beau. Its unusual so I was on the fence until I've met two children named the same. Baby would have a traditional middle name but I can't find anything else I like.

Family members have said they didn't like it straight away and OH doesn't hate it (he didn't name the last two 🤣). Help!

It isn’t their choice.
What do you need help with? Telling them that you’ll use the name? Just tell them that you’ll name your babies and they name theirs.

😄

For a boy or girl?

GAW19 · 13/11/2022 00:01

My MIL is usually a very quiet and laid back woman... when we told her DD2's name.. well, I have never seen her react so bad to anything!
We told her it upset us and that is the name we will call her. She didn't have a choice but to be happy with me Smile

Feetache · 13/11/2022 00:01

It's not their decision. I know 3 Beaus age 8-12

alexdgr8 · 13/11/2022 00:05

i agree with them.
they are thinking of the child.
it sounds more like a nick-name.
it doesn't sound solid or serious, but frivolous.

TisforTucan · 13/11/2022 00:12

@alexdgr8 I'm not asking for opinions on it, I'm asking if other people's families didn't like the name.

@MrsTerryPratchett Boy, we don't know what sex is but I know 100% what I'd name a girl. I find naming girls easier 😅

@GAW19 My MIL just mirrors everything back to her.. she just finds some thing that links to herself like she did with my other two. I think she'd struggle this time 🤣

@Dotcheck I think it might get to that point 🤣 hormones make me more ragey 🤣

@MrsTerryPratchett surely if it was a girl it would have to be Belle?

PennyDeadful · 13/11/2022 00:15

I know a few little girls called Beau - I think it suits both a boy and girl

EL8888 · 13/11/2022 00:16

Not their choice or child. They could decide their own children’s names

Exactly, which is why I asked. I see female Beaus and just wonder why you would do it!

It's male though.

PennyDeadful · 13/11/2022 00:28

@MrsTerryPratchett according to google it's "gender-neutral" - It's not a name I'd personally use but the girls I know do suit it.

BIWI · 13/11/2022 00:28

@PennyDeadful

French grammar:

Beau = male
Belle = female

(I know that you know that @MrsTerryPratchett!)

Feetache · 13/11/2022 00:35

Actually I know 4 male beaus (age 12-16).

Marcipex · 13/11/2022 00:37

I know a male Bo and a female Beaux. Yes, really.

I know a female Beaux as well, wonder if it's the same one. Surname begins with O. I don't know why you'd deliberately gives your child the initials 'BO'. I remember when it was announced and everyone just sort of stared.

MrsTerryPratchett · 13/11/2022 01:24

Google says it's gender-neutral but it also says it comes from the French. And unless you'd call a boy 'Pretty' (Belle) why would you call a girl 'Handsome'? As for Beaux, blimey. "Here's my child Handsomes". Just why?

catlady1234 · 13/11/2022 02:35

It's a fairly common name. I have a baby under 1 and iv met multiple babies called beau/ beaudy, all boys

Upsadiddles · 13/11/2022 03:01

I knew my DM disliked DD2’s name by her reaction when I suggested it (before she was born), but she kept her mouth shut. A couple of other close relatives openly hated it, said there was no way I could use it (it’s not a common name, but not completely out there or made up or anything). They said they’d just call her something else, and kept coming up with alternatives. I just didn’t engage and used it anyway. Now she’s here no one has said a word. DM admits she wasn’t keen but now couldn’t see her as anything else and she has grown to love it. The others have never commented either way but adore her and do use her name so it’s never been a problem. I have no regrets.

MIL really put SIL off using a name she loved as she had such a strong reaction to it. A few years later MIL then tried to convince me to use it because she now apparently loved it! SIL was pretty miffed, and it made me determined not to allow others to influence our choice. Thankfully she loved both DD’s names anyway.

I’d use the name you want to. Also, I know you aren’t after opinions, but I love Beau.

romdowa · 13/11/2022 03:09

I don't think pil or my own dm liked my ds name when we first picked it. My mother admits now that the name suits him down to the ground and she can't imagine him being called anything else.

ALittleBitofVitriol · 13/11/2022 03:09

Everyone hated one of our kids' names, before he was born. My in-laws are pretty blunt people and they spent quite a while trying to convince us away from it. We are pretty blunt and stubborn ourselves and used it anyway. They all got over it. He's 12 now, it suits him and it's no big deal at all.

GeorgiaGirl52 · 13/11/2022 03:44

Beauregard - boy
Isabeau - girl

Nickname for both is Beau pronounced "Bo" rhymes with go.

scarletisjustred · 13/11/2022 03:47

I wouldnt land my son with a name that means handsome. I take it you are not actually French?

lennolin · 13/11/2022 04:11

Beau is now a more common girls name but it is the male version of Belle. It suits girls but they are French names so wonder what the French opinion of the name is?

garlictwist · 13/11/2022 04:35

Marcipex · 13/11/2022 00:37

I know a male Bo and a female Beaux. Yes, really.

This is even worse. Beaux is plural.
