Using a name family don't like

Has anyone used a name family didn't like? I really like a name Beau. Its unusual so I was on the fence until I've met two children named the same. Baby would have a traditional middle name but I can't find anything else I like.

Family members have said they didn't like it straight away and OH doesn't hate it (he didn't name the last two 🤣). Help!

I know a Beau but she's a girl and it's short for Beatrice.

But beau is a male adjective Confused

I made the mistake of telling our top girl name to my mum when our son was born and she said she hated it. I wish I hadn’t said anything as she wouldn’t have made this know were we to have a girl and announce the name. We’re hoping to have another child and it’s slightly put me off it.

@TisforTucan

I know my family won't like the baby name we have chosen, so we are not telling them until baby is here. That will be their name and then people will not be unkind and will get used to it.

It's your child you name them.

I know both boys and girls called Beau and it suits them.

We're using it, my DM knows and my grandmother (my grandmother at 95, bless her loved it).

I know my other grandmother won't and DH mum won't but as many say it's not their choice.

We're using a strong more traditional middle name is so they can use that too 😊

We learned when we told our ILs what car we were thinking of getting and they utterly lambasted us never to tell them what names we were picking until the children came along. Then they were so smitten with the children that they weren’t so opinionated about the names which are all a bit out there.

KirstenBlest · 20/02/2023 19:38

Beau Geste wasn't a name in the book, it was a nickname

Shock how inappropriate! Their parents will be judged! It's so obviously a male name, the male version of Belle.

Girls can be handsome. It isn’t inappropriate and most people couldn’t care less.

KirstenBlest · 20/02/2023 20:05

@TheOriginalEmu , it's s masculine adjective, or a masculine noun.
It doesn't mean pretty.

A beau is an admirer or a boyfriend.

berksandbeyond · 20/02/2023 20:12

My mum didn’t like the name we chose for our daughter because she said it was ‘too posh’ and she’d struggle to spell/write it. She’s 4 now and can spell and write it perfectly well 🙄😂

mummabubs · 20/02/2023 20:13

My MiL literally wrinkled her nose and said "what!?" when we told her our son's name. (Rare name in the UK but common in certain European country. No heritage link for me or DH but we just loved the name). Other members of DH's family have made some (rude) comments or 'jokes' about it but I literally don't care. We love his name and that's all that matters to us. Your family don't have to live with that name right, just your child :) Go for Beau!

Iagrewithhim · 20/02/2023 20:16

When we announced our DS1's name everyone grimaced. My mother said she would call him as a nickname 'PJ'. (His first name was Paul and his second John).

I said she would most emphatically not call him PJ.

They came around.

They have no say.

End of.

I know it doesn’t mean pretty. I said girls can be handsome. In English it means admirer, in French it means handsome. Nothing wrong with using a masc noun for a girl.

Bo is a Nordic name, so people using it might not be as daft as other people think. Then again,

Yes it is Nordic and usually masculine. I'd never met a female Bo until I'd lived in the UK for a long time. Yet here it's more usually used as female.

Much like Beau is becoming unisex. Op my mother told me ds name was "Horrid" ffw 11 years she told me "I always liked the name Conrad it's such a good strong name".. yes it is.. but no I've never forgotten. Still love his name he is 21 now

user1492757084 · 21/02/2023 08:42

Beau is nice and you like it.
Don't tell family until the child is named. My MIL named her new cat a name that was my favourite; a diplomatic way of changing my mind.

I would of used it any way and thanked her for the inspiration 😂

My MIL is a priest.. so every name suggested is religious in some way. It is starting to put me off names, don't get me wrong if you are religious and want to do that's fine but it's getting irritating lol.

Unfortunately I've used all my favourite names, if I was having a girl it would be so much easier.

@TheOriginalEmu , if you think that, then I despair for you.
Don't tell me, your DD is called Virile, and your DS are called Brunette and Petite.

Blueberrywitch · 21/02/2023 10:35

I told my mum my name of choice and her reaction literally ruined the name for me. It was Penelope and she said, that’s “very English” in a non complimentary way. I was like, it’s actually from Greek mythology… but alas it’s already ruined. So I will not be telling her my latest choice until baby is born!! My name is rather nuts so she really doesn’t have a leg to stand on and shouldn’t be judging others name choices.

I know a female Beaux as well, wonder if it's the same one. Surname begins with O. I don't know why you'd deliberately gives your child the initials 'BO'. I remember when it was announced and everyone just sort of stared.

Good grief! Take a hideous name and make it worse! Poor child.

So boys can’t be brunette or petite? Really? Are you ok?

KirstenBlest · 21/02/2023 11:52

@TheOriginalEmu , can a girl be virile? No they can't be because they are adjectives that describe someone according to their sex.

I'm fine, thanks.

Offwhite · 21/02/2023 11:55

I know a woman who named her daughter Beau and was upset when people assumed the baby was a boy. She’d thought Beau meant pretty in French

KirstenBlest · 21/02/2023 12:03

It does but only if the pretty thing is male.

Not really, no. I would never describe a boy as either of those things because I know they're exclusively feminine adjectives in French.

I'd describe a girl as brunette or petite (although the French would be more likely to say a girl or woman is "brune" - apparently brunette is more of an adult film search term these days), but I'd say a boy was small or brown haired if speaking English, or "petit" or "brun" (which are pronounced very differently) if speaking French.
