This is not meant to be bitchy at all because I LOVE that people do this (subconsciously maybe?). I think most of them haven’t realised or didn’t until a few years after naming their kids! So they’re not really contrived themey names, more coincidental. My own kids accidentally have musicals-related names.

I know siblings:

Fred and Barney (flintstones)
Ariel(la) and Sebastian (little mermaid)
Madeline and Margaret (Maddie and Maggie)
Matilda (Tilly) and Billy
Henry and Harriet (essentially the same name)

and mums and kids:
Ellie and Ollie
Ellie and Belle

I worked with an Anthony. His siblings were Bernard, Charles, David, Edgar, Frances and Georgina! I bet they were expecting Gerogina to be a George!

KirstenBlest · 19/09/2022 12:33

But Frances was a girl, @IbizaToTheNorfolkBroads

Not only may Frances have been a girl, but what are the chances of having 7 boys..?! That's incredibly unlikely.

There was an aristocrat whose wife divorced him after having 7 daughters. He remarried and had another daughter. When he died, some distant relative inherited the title and estate

I think it's more forgivable that people don't notice nicknames that are similar with siblings although I still think people should really think about the possibilities. Matilda and William seem very different until you think of the potential of Tilly and Billy.

I know sisters called Mary and Rosemary. Granted they're elderly and there was less diversity in names but still.

Rhaenys · 20/09/2022 02:59

I know brothers called Henry and Harry.

I also know someone who has half brothers called Ronnie and Johnny, although one is from the Dad’s subsequent relationship and the other from the mum’s, so Ronnie and Johnny aren’t brothers themselves. Still makes me smile though.

I know brothers called Thomas & Thomas - same mum but different dads. Both her husbands were called Thomas & wanted their son to be named after them there's a 20 year age gab between the boys.

I've got a friend called Jenny whose older sister is called Jeanette. Known as Jen. So Jen and Jenny

I also know someone whose daughters are Jodie and Jo. She's a really lovely, interesting woman so I'm intrigued as why she effectively named her second child the shortened version of her older child. The third daughter is called Amelia.

A friend called her children Nicholas and Victoria. Both of whom got shortened - to Nick and Vic. She hadn't considered that possibility!

I have 2 girls whose names are both a diminutive of another name which happened to be their paternal grandma's name. Totally unplanned!

JenniferWooley · 20/09/2022 12:32

@EmmaGrundyForPM is the 2nd daughters name not maybe short for Josephine or Joanne/Joanna?

Lilacsunflowers · 20/09/2022 14:33

That must be incredibly confusing! Shock

William is known as Bill

HerRoyalNotness · 20/09/2022 17:42

brothers Carlton and Colton but have recently found out the former has very cool surnamey first name so must go by MN. I did think it was weird their names were so similar!

siblings storm and rain. Mum is pregnant again so will be interested to see if it’s a theme carried on

Lengokengo · 20/09/2022 17:44

I knew sisters Michelle and Shelley…

Enko · 20/09/2022 20:27

Lee and Lisa (their mum once told me she really loves the Lee sound. So fair enough 😀)

disappear · 20/09/2022 20:36

I also know siblings Antonio and Antonia.

Yes, short for Joanna but never called that by her parents, they always refer to her as Jo

When you say unplanned do you mean you didn't realise until after they were registered or you picked them, realised and did it any way?

AfterSchoolWorry · 22/09/2022 23:54

A YouTuber I like who has little girls called Gabby and Brielle !

Elspethelf · 23/09/2022 01:19

Identical twins Trina and Trinette. They dressed alike, had the same job, lived near each other, the works

FrazzledFirefly · 16/09/2022 00:15

Apparently there was a girl a couple of years above me at school called Annette Curtain... Not sure any parent can be that daft though!

I know Annette Curtain too! Does yours live in NW London?

QueenoftheBec · 23/09/2022 01:54

I know parents called Ann and Joe who named their son Anjo and their daughter Joanne spelled Joan.

At 6th form I knew a kid called Bernard.

Bless him, he was such a character. As soon as he told you his name, he'd see 'that look' on your face; then he'd say 'my parents hated me'.

Were they always telling him, "Not now?"

BruceWaynettaSlob · 23/09/2022 13:50

Boy I went to school with was called Ian and now has a son named Cillian. Kill Ian... Shock I'd watch his back if I were him.

I know brothers called Leon and Noel. I wish their parents had had a third and called him Elon.
