Me and DP like slightly “old men” names
we already have two DS Winston and Baxter and have a few contenders

Montgomery “Monty”
Barnaby “Arnie”
Newton “Newt”

what are everyone’s thoughts on these and any other suggestions??

Oooohhhhh Smithersssss

Denny53 · 24/08/2022 18:02

Noooo!

mawofone · 24/08/2022 18:03

What about Stanley or Spencer?

Rodion · 24/08/2022 18:04

Monty is nice and goes with your other two, but I'd say Montgomery is just too much. I like Barnaby too but not Newton (it's only a surname to me).

Favouritefruits · 24/08/2022 18:04

I hate the name Montgomery but maybe I’m bias as that was the name of my old high school. There’s plenty of kids these days with so called ‘old men’ names.

RuthW · 24/08/2022 18:04

Montgomery and Barnaby are lovely. We had a dog called Montgomery. I'm old enough to remember Barnaby The Bear though.

Tanfastic · 24/08/2022 18:06

I like it but I did used to have a dog called Monty 😂

Iamclearlyamug · 24/08/2022 18:08

There's a Montgomery (monty) in my DDs class - he's a lovely lad and his name really suits him

Carrieonmywaywardsun · 24/08/2022 18:08

Montgomery is lovely, Monty is sweet too

Wowyourebitter · 24/08/2022 18:09

I know a few Barnabys, none of them are shortened to Arnie, all Barney.
Montyis an animal name to me.
Arthur shortened to Artie then Art?

Sandysandwich · 24/08/2022 18:16

You want to call your child Newt? Montgomery is a bit of a silly posh name, but Newt is just mean, its like calling him lizard or toad

Barnaby is nice enough though

Cheeselog · 24/08/2022 18:17

Monty = the dog en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Monty_the_Dog (the tv series is available on YouTube!)
Barnaby is quite nice but I don’t like Arnie. Barney is the natural nickname.
Newt is awful. What’s next, frogspawn?

Needmorelego · 24/08/2022 18:18

Are these for humans or dogs ?

I really don’t think any lad would be grateful for you calling him Montgomery or Barnaby

sausagepastapot · 24/08/2022 18:20

I know one Monty who is an absolute cunt, so I hate the name.

Louis?
Alfred?
Otto?
Cyrus?
Theodore?
Frederick?
Ralph?
Stanley?

LocalHobo · 24/08/2022 18:24

I have two of the names mentioned, and if I had another boy I would have used Diggory- how cute is Diggers?

Wouldloveanother · 24/08/2022 18:25

Very cute @LocalHobo - for a spaniel

a grown man called diggery?!

AgathaPastie · 24/08/2022 18:26

Sidney - Sid
Edward - Eddie
Wilfred - Wilf
Albert - Bert
Bramhall - Bram
Royston - Roy

Needmorelego · 24/08/2022 18:28

GORGEOUS name. My son is a Montgomery but a monty/mont for short. He’s a lively athletic character and I think the name suits him perfectly.

Quite offended at some of the comments calling it a dog name however, quite spiteful to be honest

IsJohnReadyToMakeAComeback · 24/08/2022 18:31

OP I really don't know why you keep asking on MN. This really isn't your target audience.

OPs children's nn are Winnie and Buzz, so I'm guessing you want a nn along those lines. My favourite nn when I was younger was Ziggy but I've no idea what the full name would be.

From your list I'd go for Barnaby.

Sunnyflower2 · 24/08/2022 18:32

@Wowyourebitter We originally loved the nickname Barney but after rewatching DP favourite film from when he was a child we came across Arnie and have fallen in love with it ever since (Barnaby was the only name we could think of that’s longer for Arnie)

girl names we have considered were
Margot
Josephine (Effie)
Indie

It’s a baby name board! What do you expect? Plus as a name it’s clearly very marmite.
