Me and DP like slightly “old men” names
we already have two DS Winston and Baxter and have a few contenders

Montgomery “Monty”
Barnaby “Arnie”
Newton “Newt”

what are everyone’s thoughts on these and any other suggestions??

Yeah, my late husband met Montgomery too. In the sick bay at school. Monty gave him a box of chocolates and sat on the bed for a very long time. Even at 13 my h found him creepy. He had what his biographer called 'quasi love-affairs' with teenage boys. Plus he was a prat and not a very good general.

Monty Don is only called Monty is his professional life. Family and friends call him Montague.

Greeks really are called things like Demosthenes still. My physio is called Aphrodite. Never heard of anyone being called Atlas though. Please don't.

Josephine is always going to be shortened to Josie. It's a stretch to get Effie out of it (short for Euphemia btw).

Monty is cute but Montgomery sounds so stupid, like an old war hero in a museum. I realise it's all just down to taste and I was defending Ignacio / Ignatius on another thread yesterday! But Montgomery sounds like something from a bygone era. I realise names come back though. Maybe it would grow on me.

I cannot believe I'm the first to mention creepy old Uncle Monty from Withnail and I.

Monty sounds silly to me and Montgomery is okay but has two syllables too many.

You aren’t. @Nightswimmin quoted ‘Monty, you terrible cunt’ upthread.

I quite like Monty, and I know a very lovely adult Barnaby. You can’t get Arnie from it though.
