Thoughts on the name Montgomery

Sunnyflower2 · 24/08/2022 18:00

Me and DP like slightly “old men” names
we already have two DS Winston and Baxter and have a few contenders

Montgomery “Monty”
Barnaby “Arnie”
Newton “Newt”

what are everyone’s thoughts on these and any other suggestions??

I'd personally go for Montague nn Monty rather than Montgomery because of the Montgomery Burns connection. I know a little Barnaby nn Barney and that suits him but he's a cute little chap and would probably suit anything. I'm not going to comment on Newt.

GORGEOUS name. My son is a Montgomery but a monty/mont for short. He’s a lively athletic character and I think the name suits him perfectly.

Quite offended at some of the comments calling it a dog name however, quite spiteful to be honest

Was your son born before 1989? If not, Monty the dog preceded him.

eatsleepeatrepeat · 24/08/2022 18:34

Defo not Newton/Newt!

Sunnyflower2 · 24/08/2022 18:34

@TheOtherWoman2 that’s how I always imagine a Montgomery
it’s such a sweet name and I also love mont as a nickname

Arnie is short for Arnold

DesMoulinsRouge · 24/08/2022 18:36

Arnie is short for Arnold.

Sunnyflower2 · 24/08/2022 18:37

@eatsleepeatrepeat Newton is my maiden name so that’s where Newton has come from we both think Newt is a really cute nickname for a little boy - of corse he will most likely go by his full name when he is older

OP posts:
Sunnyflower2 · 24/08/2022 18:38

@DesMoulinsRouge me and DP are not a fan of Arnold as it reminds DP of a relative he dosnt really like - he still likes Arnie though and dosnt see that conection to that person

I think Barney is more obvious than Arnie - although personally I’d never choose a name to facilitate a shortening I liked if I didn’t like the full name plus any other possible nicknames. So I wouldn’t choose Barnaby to get Arnie unless you also really like Barnaby and Barney. And I don’t like Barney.

Newton is not for me. I don’t like Newt either.

Montgomery reminds me of Montgomery Montgomery or Mr Burns.

I do really like Winston and think Baxter is a nice wearable name. But I’m not as keen on your new options I’m afraid!

@TheOtherWoman2 I apologise. I am in a silly mood today and don't mean to sound nasty.
We all have names we like/dislike but I don't really care what people want to name their children and (despite what people frequently say here on mumsnet) if I met a Doctor/Lawyer/Judge/Prime Minister called 'Nevaeh-Mae' or 'Tinkerbell' or 'River-Ray' or whatever I wouldn't care either.

Nightswimmin · 24/08/2022 18:42

Always makes me think of the line in Withnail and I "Monty, you terrible cunt"

Hidingawaytoday · 24/08/2022 18:43

I quite like Montgomery actually, thinking about it. Barnaby is ok, not keen on Newton but given the reason for it maybe a middle name?

Ok I wasn’t that bothered anyway

MassiveSalad22 · 24/08/2022 18:45

I feel like you’d like Beauregard OP. Know one, nice kid!

Like Barnaby but I do see it could easily suit a bumbling fool a la Boris Johnson. Barnabas? There’s a grown up Barney here on holiday with us and it did make my ears prick up. Suits an adult and a kid. Also makes me think of Barney Stinson!

Monty is nice but definitely in the realms of Julian, Giles, Jasper, Conrad etc. Pink chinos.

Newton - I actually don’t mine it but I just couldn’t be arsed with the double takes and eyebrow raises when people hear it to be honest!

This is my human son not a dog what are you on about

Roselilly36 · 24/08/2022 18:46

I had an awful uncle mont, that name just makes me cringe, don’t call your beautiful baby boy that name.

I like Barnaby.

Kanaloa · 24/08/2022 18:46

I also wouldn’t be keen on on shared initials in Baxter & Barney. Some names I do really like that I think would suit -

Ernest/Ernie (bit like Arnie)
Leonard/Lenny
Albert/Albie
Cassius/Casimir
Augustus/Auggie
Oscar/Ozzie
Harold/Harry
Otis

BeanieTeen · 24/08/2022 18:47

My initial thought was that I know of three dogs called Monty - I do like it, but I do think of it as canine I have to be honest.
But the same has been said about my DS’s name, which I won’t disclose here, so don’t let that put you off 😂
Barnaby is cute in itself, I don’t think I would bother shortening it. Not a fan of Newton.

Quite offended at some of the comments calling it a dog name however, quite spiteful to be honest

The same is said about my DS’s name - and I can see why, people are known to use it as a dog’s name. Just like Monty. Nothing offensive about stating a fact. Grow some thicker skin @TheOtherWoman2

Kanaloa · 24/08/2022 18:47

Oh I also met a baby Roland which I thought was cute - his mum was calling him Rollo!

Monty the dog is a popular children’s book series about a greedy, glasses-wearing dog that was made into a tv series in the 90s. I posted a Wikipedia link further up the thread.

MassiveSalad22 · 24/08/2022 18:49

Good point re Baxter and Barney.

I really don’t see why people are hung up on Monty the dog (never heard of him, 1989 baby here!). Dolly the sheep? George Pig? Daniel Tiger?

HelpMeGetThrough · 24/08/2022 18:50

Excellent!!!

Also weird that people care about Monty to Dog (?) but not Barney the dinosaur.
