Thoughts on the name Montgomery

Sunnyflower2 · 24/08/2022 18:00

Me and DP like slightly “old men” names
we already have two DS Winston and Baxter and have a few contenders

Montgomery “Monty”
Barnaby “Arnie”
Newton “Newt”

what are everyone’s thoughts on these and any other suggestions??

Well Newt is a hard fucking no (OP!!!)

I am a Diggory fan!. I was taught cricket by a 6 foot 3 Aussie one, who spent every Wed afternoon bright red as we teased him mercilessly and made him Daisy chains. I don’t think girls’ games were what he envisaged from his teaching exchange, but he was cute.

For Arnie I think you really need Arnold, which is nicely characterful

I like Barnaby (or better Barnabas) nn Barney

Montgomery is alright, but prefer other options

Ernest nn Ernie
Leonard nn Lenny
Laurence nn Laurie/Larry
Silas
Amos
Aneurin nn Nye
Auberon nn Bron
Abraham nn Bram
Gideon
Harold nn Hal
Josiah
Francis
Merriman nn Merry
Merlin
Alexander nn Sandy or Alec
sylvestor
Robert nn Bobby
Richard nn Ricky (or Dickon.. you couldn’t could you but it’s kind of great)
Alberic nn Ricky, Albie or Bertie
Julius
Gideon
Walter
Wilfred
Randolph

Good point re Baxter and Barney.

I really don’t see why people are hung up on Monty the dog (never heard of him, 1989 baby here!). Dolly the sheep? George Pig? Daniel Tiger?

Minnie Mouse, Curious George, Thomas the Tank Engine, Donald Duck, Tom & Jerry, Patrick Starr, Lola Bunny, Felix the Cat, Jessica Rabbit. Almost like the name the anthropomorphised cartoon characters common human names!

MassiveSalad22 · 24/08/2022 18:54

OP see how many people think it’s funny to say ‘eeexcellennnt’….. that’s definitely enough to put one off using the name hey? 🤣🤣

Right exactly? So what’s the dog thing? I can’t tell if you’re having a go at me or agreeing with me 😄

TheOtherWoman2 · 24/08/2022 18:31

GORGEOUS name. My son is a Montgomery but a monty/mont for short. He’s a lively athletic character and I think the name suits him perfectly.

Quite offended at some of the comments calling it a dog name however, quite spiteful to be honest

@TheOtherWoman2

Don’t be such a snow flake woman, it’s a name board. The point is people say what they think. At least no one could call it a Naughty Boy’s Name (yet).

Needmorelego · 24/08/2022 18:56

@TheOtherWoman2 actually in the (almost) hour of this thread going the name Monty has grown on me.
I quite like it. I want a little Monty now (too old for more babies though 🙁)
(He would have a pet newt called Diggory)

I’m agreeing 😂 of course there will be cartoon characters with almost any name! As long as it’s not a bad association or silly like calling your child Walter-White or Thanos or something what’s the issue? So many children called George yet George Pig and Curious George don’t seem to be a problem.

Sunnyflower2 · 24/08/2022 18:37

@eatsleepeatrepeat Newton is my maiden name so that’s where Newton has come from we both think Newt is a really cute nickname for a little boy - of corse he will most likely go by his full name when he is older

middle name OP. Else social services might take an interest 😁

OriginalUsername2 · 24/08/2022 18:58

I LOVE your girl option of Josephine / Effie

Montgomery sounds nice and I’ve not heard of it much.

Because you’re more likely to come across a dog called Monty than a tiger or sheep during your life? Possibly even than a human called Monty.

Daniel and George are very common names so they aren’t as subject to specific associations.

I would avoid Dolly as well, I actually just posted that on another thread.

Cheeselog · 24/08/2022 19:01

I was born in 1995 btw. I remember reminiscing about Monty the dog at secondary school so I know he was popular in my age group. (More likely to make that connection than Monty Don!)

Bideshi · 24/08/2022 19:02

Tanfastic · 24/08/2022 18:06

I like it but I did used to have a dog called Monty 😂

Everybody had a dog called Monty.

Monty Don is Montague by the way. Marginally less awful. Newt is terrible.

Basically all the dogs I know have human names though. It’s A Thing isn’t it? So the dog monty has a human name. The person Monty doesn’t have a dog’s name. It’s not like OP is considering Fido, Rover and Gnasher.

ellyoctober · 24/08/2022 19:03

How many name threads can one poster start?

Are you even pregnant @Sunnyflower2

User354354 · 24/08/2022 19:04

Monty isn't awful. It goes with the theme of your other children. I imagine Winston, Baxter and Montgomery to go to boarding school, have a briefcase at 6 years old and play squash and polo at the weekends.

Newt is absolutely horrendous and should be avoided.

Beefilm · 24/08/2022 19:05

I really like Montgomery (like Montague more though!) and that is despite also knowing a Monty who wasn't a particularly nice boy, and also knowing a secondary school named after the Field Marshall but it was a boys school so I didn't go to it.

I've known a Barnaby in my time. I prefer it to any nicknamex you would get from it. I didn't go for Newton until you said it was your maiden name OP. I love the tradition of naming children after your maiden name. I couldn't quite bring myself to do it so my son has a name with the same first syllable as my maiden name.

I like your girl choices too. All round thumbs up from me - more so than the name you were asking about earlier this week. Smile

It’s clearly relevant information if people consider it to be generally associated with dogs though, as the insulted PP has demonstrated.

hewouldwouldnthe · 24/08/2022 19:06

I love it. He will always be called Monty anyway so go for it.

User354354 · 24/08/2022 19:07

Hold on.

You're other thread says you are due twins. And have winny and buzz as your other children.

ihatebojo · 24/08/2022 19:27

I LOVE Barnaby. I think it is so cool.

I also love Ezra or Greyson.

MrsU2022 · 24/08/2022 19:28

Monty is really cute, I like it

Sorry it's the Newt part that's just not sitting right with me! They're not the nicest of creatures!

Sunnyflower2 · 24/08/2022 18:32

@Wowyourebitter We originally loved the nickname Barney but after rewatching DP favourite film from when he was a child we came across Arnie and have fallen in love with it ever since (Barnaby was the only name we could think of that’s longer for Arnie)

girl names we have considered were
Margot
Josephine (Effie)
Indie

Arnold. Arnie is the shortened version.

Sunnyflower2 · 24/08/2022 19:37

@User354354 Winnie and Buzz are their family nicknames-only we use it

yes we are expecting twins but we don’t want them to really match so are just wanting to pick two separate names that we love

Newt Scamander off fantastic beasts. That’s what just came to mind with ‘Newt’.

But the HP novels are full of fun old man names if you think about it! Maybe pop on Wikipedia OP and have a browse of the character list.
