Looking for an uncommon boys' name...again

MooseBreath · 18/06/2022 16:32

Just found out that baby number two is a boy! Very excited, except about the prospect of naming him.

DH and I struggled a lot to agree on boys' names for DS1. We have a lot of criteria:

  1. I am Jewish, so no names of living relatives or friends. This rules out a lot of names.
  2. No names in top 20, as DH grew up "John K" and hated it (not his real name).
  3. I am Canadian and a lot of names that I find normal aren't really suitable in the UK. DH is British, same story for in Canada.
  4. Our surname is a misspelt household object. Any kind of adjective or noun-type name sounds ridiculous.

We are also very picky, it seems. Here is our current list of possibilities, but we're not sold on any of them:
Lennox
Ford
Scott
Geoffrey

I quite like Gerard (Gerry), Linus, and Gilbert (Gill), but these have all been vetoed by DH.

Could anyone please offer any ideas or opinions on the current contenders? Thank you!

Silas
Montague (Monty)
Benedict
Edward (not many around ATM)
Oban
Otis
Jared
Jesse
Seth

MooseBreath · 18/06/2022 16:41

Benedict and Edward (to a Canadian ear) are super dated! DH has suggested both.

I like Jesse, but DS1's frequently used nickname rhymes with Jess.

I like Otis and Jared, but can't see them being my kid, if you know what I mean?

The others, I'm no so keen.

Thank you though!

Yes...there isn't really a style per se. It's very random!

I like Ellis and Angus, but they have also been ixnayed. DH is pickier than I am for sure.

From your list, I find Scott and Geoffrey dated but Scott is a nice enough name. Lennox and Ford are surnames to me. Lennox has a Scottish vibe to me, Ford a North American one.

A few ideas!

Fraser
Ross
Ivo
Cass
Fergus
Reuben
Sean
Euan
Struan
Sholto
Magnus
Owen
Otto
Lawrence
Calum

Out of curiosity, op, what's the reasoning behind no names of living family and friends?

Apologies, not familiar with this practice! The friends bit surprises me.

Do you specifically not want any Old Testament/Jewish names? No Daniel, Eli, Benjamin etc?

I was a bit surprised about Benedict-that’s a very obvious Christian name. I would have assumed New Testament/saints’ names are out.

But all modern-type surname names are OK? Is that right?

Guy?
Miles?

I quite like Sullivan, Beckett, and Miles!

I'll be honest, I don't know why Jewish people don't name after the living. I'm not practicing (married a "Christian" agnostic), but my family is, so it's more out of respect for them.

I think I'm going to push more for Linus.

Elias? Eli? Ezekiel?

Jonah?

Yonathan?

Adam? (You hardly hear any nowadays).

NohoHank · 18/06/2022 17:56

I like Linus, Benedict and Lennox. Ford is too surnamey and Scott a bit dull. Geoffrey isn't ready for a revival yet I don't think.
What country will your child be growing up in? It really doesn't matter that names are considered dated in the 'other' country if they will be spending more time in/growing up in one over the other.

Luredbyapomegranate · 18/06/2022 18:00

Linus is great, so is Miles.

Jett - no, not unless you want people to Make Assumptions for his entire life.
