Looking for an uncommon boys' name...again

Just found out that baby number two is a boy! Very excited, except about the prospect of naming him.

DH and I struggled a lot to agree on boys' names for DS1. We have a lot of criteria:

  1. I am Jewish, so no names of living relatives or friends. This rules out a lot of names.
  2. No names in top 20, as DH grew up "John K" and hated it (not his real name).
  3. I am Canadian and a lot of names that I find normal aren't really suitable in the UK. DH is British, same story for in Canada.
  4. Our surname is a misspelt household object. Any kind of adjective or noun-type name sounds ridiculous.

We are also very picky, it seems. Here is our current list of possibilities, but we're not sold on any of them:
Lennox
Ford
Scott
Geoffrey

I quite like Gerard (Gerry), Linus, and Gilbert (Gill), but these have all been vetoed by DH.

Could anyone please offer any ideas or opinions on the current contenders? Thank you!

DS1's first and middle names have both been mentioned now, so they're out!

I love the name Matthew, but it shortens to Matt, which sounds ridiculous with our surname.

So many great suggestions here! I have added several to our list.

Also, the reasoning behind "Ford" is after the character from Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy (DH's favourite book). I agree that it sounds like a surname, but I think it would be used as a middle name if we went with it.

Ford would be a great middle name if not a a first name. Love an unusual middle name. Our friend’s son’s middle name is Fox which we love!

How the heck does Mumsnet know all the names you have to rule out under point 1?

Bernard? (shot in the dark)

MooseBreath · 19/06/2022 20:33

Obviously I don't expect posters to know all the names for the first one. But it would be ridiculously outing if I named all of my male relatives... If any of those names are mentioned, I am just moving on from them.

Gideon is interesting!

Bernard sounds nice in the UK, but in a Canadian accent is said "Burr-NAHRD" and is awful!

Am I the only one that finds it ridiculous the way prospective parents get their knickers in a twist over their kids names? In the scheme of things there are a million other far more important issues you need to think about and plan for as a parent - a name, however carefully chosen is not going to make much difference to the uniqueness, success or happiness of your child compared to just about every other thing you do as a parent - call him Pi, Pylon or Pentagon, Muesli, Mu or Lebanon, Xenon , Diphthong or Hapax Legomenon if it makes you feel any better. I think your list of exclusions is ridiculous TBH - you've just made a job that should be a joyous thing into a complex almost insoluble problem - is this how you intend to parent?

Should she just call him nothing then !

Mars.

After the planet, would be a good one.

Basilbrushgotfat · 19/06/2022 22:08

@larkstar actually studies have proven a definitely correlation between name choice and future successes of the child, it's quite interesting.

I think its unfortunate you've taken a thread which should be focusing on the excitement of upcoming parenthood and taken it as an opportunity to attack the op.

Lots of evidence points to a correlation between a person's name and their future success.

Scott is unusual yet known, so I think it's a good choice. It has connotations of Scott Fitzgerald ( so if you like that author's work).

I think there is a female character named Lennox in ' The Blue Train' mystery, by Agatha Christie. Not that that matters, but might be a consideration if it suddenly became very popular - like Scout - as a girl's name.

I think it's good to choose a good-sounding name which has some association you like.
