I’ll go first, I hate to say but I genuinely think nevaeh has such a pretty sound but the name itself tends to get alot of hate.

Here it goes. It's a name that the Chavvy Police on mumsnet come down on like a tonne of bricks, but to me I only see it as the name of a truly inspirational young man who is kind hearted, much loved and been through so much in life.
I'm proud to call him my son.

Although I did have times when the name had so much hate that I actually considered changing it, I'm so glad I didn't as he loves his name as much as I do.
He is non verbal but recognised and responded to his name at an early age.

Almost 12 years after naming him I really couldn't imagine him being called anything else.

I'm almost too nervous to say his name on here (which is ridiculous), but I'll take a chance. His name is .........Kai. 😍

@Caszekey my husband vetoed Balthazar for our first boy, but we both agreed on Hector and absolutely love it. DD would have either been Thaddeus or Linus, had she been a boy.

In terms of unpopular names, I've always liked the sound of Shiloh and Joshua, but I'd never use either.

EHCP999 · 22/07/2022 07:11

@Ignoranceisbliss44 he sounds fantastic ❤️.

I really like Aidan. It’s a very old saints name to me, with connections to Northumberland. I don’t associate it with Kayden/Jayden/Hayden etc.

I think there's a difference between MN, especially boards like this where you naturally get people who have an interest in names, and real life.

Lots of people like names like Olivia (myself included) in real life but here you'll get people saying how boring it is since it's been so popular.

I also like American-style names like Hunter. Not sure I'd be brave enough to name a child it but I do like it.

Nutininutter · 22/07/2022 15:27

Elspeth and Vivienne.. bloody loved those names for a girl- DH said absolutely not

Sid for a boy 😢 I love them.

TrashyPanda · 23/07/2022 10:41

I love Slavic names, but MN usually disagrees.

i think Tadeusz is gorgeous, and don’t think it’s difficult to pronounce

MadameMinimes · 23/07/2022 10:56

I know lots of lovely teenagers called Sharon, Tracy and Danielle/a. Mumsnet always insists that there are no young people with these names nowadays but they seem to have been very popular in my local area for babies born 11 to 18 years ago. Tracy is especially popular every year group has at least a couple of them.
A few years back Precious was exceptionally common for secondary age girls at my school and Mumsnet used to be quite scathing about it back then. I had some classes where there were three or four in one class of 30. We still have some, but less of them in the younger years and an increase in Tracy, Esther, Mary, Danielle and Daniella.

I like Georgia which always gets blasted on mn.

I like Georgia too. I also like Dixie, which really gets blasted!! Couldn't even name my new puppy Dixie, which would have gone so well with my older dog, Pixie.

I was talking about this recently with my daughter. It’s not a name but chlamydia sounds like it could be a name. We agreed it’s quite cute 😂

Candida is a pretty sounding name, but Candida albicans = thrush.

YesIReallyDoLikeRootBeer · 25/07/2022 07:47

I also love the sound of Nevaeh.
My youngest son is named Colin

I like Edgar, Byron and Sid

But Olivia is overused - people in real life are just polite enough not to call someone's name 'boring'.

I absolutely adore Angie. Also like Ray, Francine, Tracey, Kit and Jean.

angieloumc · 25/07/2022 19:16

I love the name Tiffany, I think it's so pretty.

Musmerian · 26/07/2022 07:06

@SarahAndQuack - I’d say Penelope is pretty mainstream. I’m Greek and my sister’s middle name is Ariadne! I live Hero and Orestes but even though I’m Greek felt it would be too much. My eldest two are called Hester and Edmund which are not MN favourites but I love them ( and so do they).

Ravenclawdropout · 26/07/2022 07:08

Tiffany has always been associated or even used instead of Epiphany, which is Jan 6th in the Catholic Church and when the Three Kings arrive. So often used for girls born in the Christmas period, Natalia/Natalie is another one. I think they are all lovely names.

Ravenclawdropout · 26/07/2022 07:10

My best friend growing up was Hattie (Harriet) and her big sister was Hester who I thought was the epitome of cool.

Luna! Hopefully it's not hated as such, but I asked for advice on naming my third daughter when I was pregnant and apparently its 'a dogs name'.

We named her Luna anyway and I'm totally in love with it, its so pretty and sounds lovely with my other daughters names. I think I really would've regretted calling her anything else.

We call her Lulu as well and she absolutely rocks it. Smile

overthinkersanonnymus · 30/07/2022 21:23

I love Lucifer for a boy and good old Katie for a girl. I get the hate towards the name Lucifer (I like the sound) but what's wrong with Katie!

But lots of people aren't aware it's so popular - that's my point. On these boards you get an over representation of people who know more about name trends than the average person. They're not being polite to me as I have no connection to any Olivias nor do I bring it up as a name I like or would use.

DuchessOfSausage · 02/08/2022 09:54

I agree with @DancingUnderTheLights , you get OP's asking if a name like Ava or Freya is too out there, when they've been overpopular for years.
You also get names that are hugely popular on here, which probably means they'll become massively popular.

darkgreener is useful for checking how popular a name is, and if it has passed it's peak.

As an example, I can remember when Chloe was really unusual, now I know a lot of them, or their parents. names.darkgreener.com/#chloe. Same goes for Theo, which if you include Theodore, is probably the most popular name in England and Wales, even more popular than Muhammad/Mohammed

I have a secret love for those rather old-fashioned "Catholic" names like Bernadette and Bridget.
