I’ll go first, I hate to say but I genuinely think nevaeh has such a pretty sound but the name itself tends to get alot of hate.

Or “niam”, rhyming with Liam

Sharon is pronounced ShaRON in Israel (שרון), both as a place and a name. It's interesting how a simple shift of emphasis can can transport a name from Essex to the Middle East.

Names from other languages/cultures tend to age badly
I don't understand why people take a name from another language/culture then mispronounce it

I never understood the appeal of names like Tracy, Casey, Riley and Darcy, they are surnames

I really like Neil, Julian, Jason, Martin, Brian... Being a foreigner, they just don't have that old man connotation to me at all- I just go by whether I like the sound.
Similarly Myra just sounds like a nice name to me, without the instant shock/cringe (I'm aware of the connotation by now though).

I love the name Isis
I think it sounds cool and elegant.
Obviously the connotations have spoilt it

I’m a big fan spiv gangster names on small boys: Eddy, Ronnie, Lenny, Vinnie, Reggie, Mikey, Ray.

I am sometimes shocked by the names that are insulted on here.

I love the name Frank and would happily use it if my DP liked it, it was one of my absolute faves...I had no idea people felt so strongly against it until reading that recent thread on here :-/ to me it's just a totally normal name?

Tbh though, even though DP & I really struggling with girls' names, I don't use this board for advice as obviously everyone has their own tastes and there are no definitive good or bad names, but people act like there are on here a lot of the time.

I absolutely love Ira for a boy (like Ira Glass from the podcast This American Life)

Unfortunately in the UK most people have told me they hate it due to it being spelt the same as the IRA.

@SliceOfCakeCupOfTea , @blugray , the mainstream mispronunciation is Neev. It's Nee-uv. [ˈniːəv]

I love the names Jasper and Atticus but have seen people on MN saying they think both are pretentious and try hard.

Comments that Jasper is a ‘dog/cat’ name. That Atticus is ‘I once read a book for GCSE English…” and even a nasty “Atticus the Twaticus” comment.

Still hasn’t changed my mind on them though 🙂

Atticus was in our list but we wimped out. I also regret not insisting on Thaddeus and Balthazar. E chose Castiel and Azekiel though. So kept it mainstream 😂😂

My (very common, short, never-fashionable-so-never-not-fashionable, unpretentious!) name is “wet” according to MN. It’s a perfectly serviceable name imo.

I do like Artemis. That’s less serviceable!

Ira is lovely. I hadn’t even thought of the IRA problem.

Lucy? Always see it described as wet on here but I think it’s lovely

I was talking about this recently with my daughter. It’s not a name but chlamydia sounds like it could be a name. We agreed it’s quite cute 😂

I once had a similar conversation about Vaseline 😂

I quite like a lot of 'unpopular' names like Gary and Terry. I just think they sound mint on little kids

I know someone who has a toddler son called Dennis, and I absolutely love it, it suits him so much.

I nearly called DD Persephone, which sometimes gets a lot of hate when it’s mentioned.

Oh I love Persephone!

I like Dennis. might even dress him in a red and black striped jumper

Not so keen on Denis, the D looks like it needs a tail

I don't think Nevaeh is hated because of anything other than people always adding "it's heaven spelled backwards" on to the end of it.

I looked after a woman on the maternity ward who had named her baby Ian, and the more I said it, the more beautiful it sounded.

It's funny how Myra's a no-no, but Ian escapes!

I came onto say Karen as well, I've always liked it. I was born in the 60s when it was popular, and was always jealous of any Karens I met.

I love Georgia too, it's a pretty name.

I love surnames as first names.
I like "chavvy" according to MN name's.
Like Jaiden,Logan.
I was going to cally 2nd son either Quincy or Franklin but it didn't suit him.

It’s just because Myra is a far more unusual name combined with a crime with that level of notoriety. Myra Hindley is the only association most people have with Myra, while I can check off about five Ians without even thinking too hard.

Same as how Adolph is totally unusable but Joseph is fine to use.

Love the sound and meaning of the name Ursula but Disney has ruined it!
