Aubrey or Alice?

Hello,

We've finally got down to two names on our baby list that we both like and I was wondering which people may prefer

Personally I prefer Aubrey as it's a little more uncommon than Alice but a lot of my family thinks it's a man's name (not since 1979 at least haha) but I'm unsure

What do you prefer? And if you hate both please can you advise some similar names doesn't have to begin with an A

Thank you :)

I vote for Aubrey! I love that name!

Aurorie11 · 11/06/2022 12:52

I still hear Aubrey as a man's name, what about Audrey? But love Alice.

TheYearOfSmallThings · 11/06/2022 12:52

God, Alice! 1000 times Alice!

PuppyMonkey · 11/06/2022 12:54

I think of Aubrey as a man’s name too. Prefer Audrey.

(what’s the 1979 thing about??)

TheYearOfSmallThings · 11/06/2022 12:54

I still hear Aubrey as a man's name

That is because Aubrey is a man's name.

SheWoreYellow · 11/06/2022 12:54

I wouldn’t want a name that is more often used for the opposite sex. So I’d say Alice. I presume you don’t like Audrey?

DameMargaretofChalfont · 11/06/2022 12:55

Aubrey is a man's name!!!

Alice is a beautiful name.

WaltzingWaters · 11/06/2022 12:55

I’ve actually never heard of Aubrey as a mans name, I know a couple of girls with that name - think it’s lovely for a girl!

Buzz22 · 11/06/2022 12:56

Aubrey is a male name no?

PandaBrush · 11/06/2022 12:57

After some research and I apologise I got the year wrong it seems Aubrey tipped the scales in 1974 and is now used for 98% of girls. I only know if girls being called Aubrey but I think more names are becoming unisex now - I know a little girl called James so not sure whether that's a major issue that is used to be a man's name but that's why I asked for opinions, so thank you.

Well Bread thought it was a girls name in 1972. I love it. I always hum this song when I hear the name.

toastofthetown · 11/06/2022 12:59

Looking at the stats for England and Wales Aubrey is more popular for girls than boys at the moment (196 girls to 49 boys). Personally Aubrey is a name where I would expect to be any sex, though if I knew the person was in the their sixties I’d guess male, and if it were a toddler I’d expect a little girl. Personally I don’t love Aubrey for a girl, and much prefer Alice.

NoSquirrels · 11/06/2022 13:05

I’m in my 40s and never met a female Aubrey. I’d assume you’d had a boy. Audrey would be the girl version (Audrey Hepburn, Audrey Tatou - v cool!)

For other A names you might find similar

Alba
Adelaide
Adeline
Aphra
Ava
Aster
Azalea

Aubrey if it's a surprise boy

Alice for a girl

woodhill · 11/06/2022 13:18

Yes the bread song is lovely

I like both names

DuchessOfSausage · 11/06/2022 13:19

Alice.
Aubrey is a man's name

xmasaries · 11/06/2022 13:31

I've never heard Aubrey as a male name, only a female name. But I still don't like it, sorry Grin
Alice is beautiful in comparison!

Phyllis321 · 11/06/2022 13:31

Isn't Aubrey a male name?

PandaBrush · 11/06/2022 13:34

It's not a males name, no.

However I think different generations see it differently (although there's definitely some different names around now so would probably be quite normal in the future) so will get back to the drawing board.

I've gone off Alice as well now, it's too popular I think.

I knew a boy called Aubrey in the 90s. He was so good looking and I felt sorry for him having such a fuddy duddy old name. I don't find it any more appealing on a girl tbh.

So I'd have to go for Alice I suppose.

MurderAtTheBeautyPageant · 11/06/2022 13:37

It's not a males name, no.

Ah now. It's a traditionally male name that's now become unisex, but there's no denying its origin.

That's why I put it in the present tense that now it's not a males name.

Don't be silly. Of course it's still a boys' name too. Even if there are far fewer of them being born than girl Aubreys.
