Aubrey or Alice?

Hello,

We've finally got down to two names on our baby list that we both like and I was wondering which people may prefer

Personally I prefer Aubrey as it's a little more uncommon than Alice but a lot of my family thinks it's a man's name (not since 1979 at least haha) but I'm unsure

What do you prefer? And if you hate both please can you advise some similar names doesn't have to begin with an A

Thank you :)

I really don't like Aubrey. And it's a man's name. Even if you don't think it's a man's name, you only have to look at the comments on here to realise that many people do.

Alice is a lovely name

Smidge001 · 12/06/2022 08:19

Aubrey IS a man's name, surely?

SemperIdem · 12/06/2022 08:40

Aubrey is a male name. It’s Drake’s given name for example.

I find the trend for giving girls boys names odd - names never go the other way. No boys being names Sophie are there. Which is no more outlandish than girls being named Aubrey or James.

I prefer Alice.

SemperIdem · 12/06/2022 08:43

Meredith is an anglicised spelling of Meredydd, which is a traditional male name in Wales and pronounced differently. Meredith itself is not a male name.

I like Aubrey. I know only of girl Aubrey's. I know a girl called Andi as well, which I think is cool.

Don't like Alice. Seems to get love on here but not IRL whenever it is mentioned in my experience. What about Ellis?

Koala3d · 12/06/2022 08:53

A names are pretty! I like Alicia and Annis (georgette heyer heroine!) and also like names like August or Autumn etc which have a really romantic vibe

blameitonthecaffeine · 12/06/2022 09:34

I love Aubrey. It's no more a boys' name than Hilary or Tracy are. Originally, yes. Now, no. Plenty of little girls called Aubrey, very few boys.

Alice is fine but I find it a bit uninspired.

Similar A names to Aubrey:
Avery, Alexis, Addison, Ashleigh, Amberley, Amy, Abby

Similar A names to Alice:
Alannah, Aliya, Aria, Ariana, Alicia, Alyona, Aphra, Astrid, Agnes

Aubrey IS a man's name.

Unless it's one of those names that's suddenly changed recently.....like using James for a girl?

It hasn't changed recently - it changed in 1974

I know a baby Aubrey - a boy. I think of it as boys name, and I'm mid thirties.

PandaBrush · 12/06/2022 11:09

Sorry just reading the comments and even though they are both out - Drakes first name is Aubrey but it's also Aubrey Plaza's name.

The website spelt Meredith as Meredith when saying it was a boys name that's why I mentioned it.

Whether people believe it's only a males name is a bit irrelevant because it's not there's plenty of females called Aubrey so it's definitely unisex - if you don't like it that's fine - I've found out my name used to be primarily a boys name and has been used for girls since the 60s but no one would say my names a man's name Grin

Aubrey was a teenage female character in Neighbours recently

Luredbyapomegranate · 12/06/2022 13:45

Audrey, or Astrid

Aubrey I do think is much better as a boys name, and too many Alices

Olwen, Frances, Lois, Katharine, Beatrice, Elsbeth, Louise, Honor, Esther, Sarah, Emma, Stella. Flora, Catrin, Caitlin, Emmeline, Caroline, Imogen, Marianne, Lydia, Louisa, Adela, Claudia, Julia / Juliet I’d think of as similar names - also Edith, but that seems very overused right now

Luredbyapomegranate · 12/06/2022 13:46

Also Annis, perhaps

Spidey66 · 12/06/2022 15:56

The OP says in her first post

What do you prefer? And if you hate both please can you advise some similar names doesn't have to begin with an A

Suggestions don't have to start with A

RuthW · 12/06/2022 18:26

Alice.

Aubrey is a boy's name to me.

RuthW · 12/06/2022 18:28

Aubrey, boys and girls, is far more popular than Alice now.

YouSoundLovely · 12/06/2022 18:34

Aubrey is definitely a boy's name.

Alice is nice.

In the Aubrey vibe (girl equivalents, obviously), IMO, are names like Winifred, Sybil, Joan.

Alice is very classic - Charlotte, Anne/Anna, Philippa perhaps.

SpaceJamtart · 12/06/2022 18:36

I love Alice
And I know you said they didnt need to start with A but they remind me of Alyssa
Alicia
Auri

catsonahottinroof · 12/06/2022 18:47

I immediately thought Aubrey was a boy's name and was coming on to say I preferred Alice, but I see the op has gone off that name too.
Other possibilities I can think of that have a similar feel:
Emmeline (you could shorten it to Emmie)
Sorcha
Others have suggested Avery, and I agree it has a similar vibe to Aubrey, in that it often seems to be a unisex name, especially in America

woodhill · 12/06/2022 18:55

Avery sounds like a surname to me

babyjellyfish · 13/06/2022 09:05

Alice or Audrey.
