Aubrey or Alice?

Hello,

We've finally got down to two names on our baby list that we both like and I was wondering which people may prefer

Personally I prefer Aubrey as it's a little more uncommon than Alice but a lot of my family thinks it's a man's name (not since 1979 at least haha) but I'm unsure

What do you prefer? And if you hate both please can you advise some similar names doesn't have to begin with an A

I’ve a 3yo Alice and haven’t met any others her age- yet! That said, I LOVED the names Aerin (Estee Lauder’s granddaughter’s name), Edie and Ines for girls - all were absolutely vetoed though!

Aubrey is definitely a bloke. Probably in a cardigan with leather elbow patches.

Alice is lovely.

I’m not sure it’s true that Alison was once a man’s name. There’s a slutty Alison in Chaucer.

I love Aubrey. Alice is lovely too but super common. Someone mentioned Audrey above - that name is just timeless. Love it. Imagine Audrey Hepburn xx

Interesting, I've never thought of Bree/Brie being short for Aubrey. I've always thought it was an anglicised spelling of the Irish Brígh, although I've also heard it used as a shortening for Brian(n)a and Sabrina.

I think the boys'-or-girls'-name (or both) question varies quite a bit based on place as well as time - e.g., very traditional male French names Alexis and Rémi/Rémy are almost exclusively used for girls in the USA now, so much so that French-speaking parents may feel pressure to avoid them.

Maybe Aliza instead of Alice?
Also Kim and Lesley are both boys and girls names

Not keen on Aubrey. The only one I know is a 90 year old man.

Aubrey is definitely a boy’s name to me. So, Alice, but I do find it dull.

I'd choose Alice over Aubrey, but Audrey over Alice.

I think Aubrey is a bit 'Teen Mom' to be honest.

Aubrey is lovely but it's a bit of a phase name. Alice is never not going to be a lovely name. Ally for short is a personal favourite x

What about Amelie? I know it had a huge surge in popularity around the time the film came out but it's still a nice name.

Aubrey really is a boys name but a nice one.

If you are having a girl Alice is a classic name.

I don't know any boys with that name, is it old fashioned man's name or more popular for certain areas ? I know Audrey is old ladies name but heard of a few baby girls called Aubrey, but no boys

Boycie in OFAH has the middle name Aubrey.

@soncole didn't know that😊 they still didn't use the name though so was it a bad name then.? That's why they chose the name to then use a nick name

Alice is fine. I didn't know Aubrey could be a girl's name. I'm in my 50s.

Honestly? I think Aubrey is a really ugly name OP, sorry 🤦‍♀️
