Aubrey or Alice?

Hello,

We've finally got down to two names on our baby list that we both like and I was wondering which people may prefer

Personally I prefer Aubrey as it's a little more uncommon than Alice but a lot of my family thinks it's a man's name (not since 1979 at least haha) but I'm unsure

What do you prefer? And if you hate both please can you advise some similar names doesn't have to begin with an A

Thank you :)

Don't be silly. Of course it's still a boys' name too. Even if there are far fewer of them being born than girl Aubreys.

What I meant was it's not just a males name and that it's unisex - sorry for not being clearer.

I think of Aubrey as a boys name, and if I'm honest, a pretty dreadful one at that. Sorry, I think it's ugly and clumpy.

Alice on the other hand us beautiful.

DanglingMod · 11/06/2022 13:43

Aubrey for a boy.

Audrey, Audra for a girl?

Or Alice is v lovely and not that overused.

Remaker · 11/06/2022 13:45

To me Aubrey is part of the dreadful Americanised ‘boys name used as girls name’ style. Dislike it intensely.

Alice is a lovely name. Audrey is nice too.

Rodneytrotterslovechild · 11/06/2022 13:45

Isn’t it the joke that boysie in only fools and horses first name was aubury?
I adore Alice-it’s just so fresh and pretty

Alwayspaintyournails · 11/06/2022 13:46

I love Alice.

PandaBrush · 11/06/2022 13:48

I think they're both out now. Don't get me wrong though I do think Alice is pretty but I know of a few babies that have been called Alice lately and then other babies have had what I thought was pretty out there names so I'm trying to find a balance.

Sorry, I think Aubrey is male too. Féminises versions are Brie/Bree ( Brie Larson for example) If Alice is too popular, how about Alizé (pronounced Aleezay) ?

I really like the name Bree and that's why I was agreeing with Aubrey so I could use it as a nn but dh wouldn't agree to just Bree.

I've never thought of that name, I'll see what Dh thinks. Thank you

Briony?

orangeisthenewpuce · 11/06/2022 14:10

Aubrey is a man's name. Alice is lovely.

DisforDarkChocolate · 11/06/2022 14:14

I'm with your family, Aubrey is a man's name. Alice is beautiful, as is Audrey.

PandaBrush · 11/06/2022 14:15

Even though this is side tracking a little bit I've just had a google at female names that used to be prominently male names in the past and I'm quite surprised at a few:

Allison
Lauren
Kelsey
Lindsay
Lynn
Maddison
Stacey
Shannon
Meredith
Hilary
Beverly

I never would have thought these of mens names, although I think some are fully female names now rather than unisex, learn something new everyday.

I know of a Bree short for Gabrielle, if that helps.

User000111 · 11/06/2022 15:06

I love Aubrey for a boy or a girl! It's a lovely name! It's definitely unisex

crosstalk · 11/06/2022 15:37

Lots of names cross over from one sex to another. Who would have guessed John Wayne's original name was Marion? I like many of the cross over names including Julian (as in Mother Julian of Norwich) and Vivian.

Note that Meredith is M' Red ith. Not Mare Ed ith. IMHO.

AliBaliBears · 11/06/2022 17:44

I think Aubrey will be misheard as Audrey.

MrsMop1964 · 11/06/2022 17:51

Alice. Would think of Aubrey Beardsley if I heard Aubrey so I'd think it was a man's name.
(Unfortunately with Alice I'd also think of Chubby Brown singing 'who the fuck is Alice?' but hopefully that's just me being totally uncultured!)

Yourstory · 11/06/2022 17:54

To me Aubrey feels American.. I have no idea why? I really like Alice but I feel it's now quite popular, around here at least. A similar ish name but less common and one I prefer is Ada.

bbqhulahoop · 11/06/2022 17:59

Alice

Stopallthisnonsense · 11/06/2022 18:03

Love both names but do think of Aubrey as a male name.

StottyCakeandJam · 11/06/2022 18:05

I live next door to an Aubrey. He’s 96. I think people will miss-hear it as Audrey.

constantindigestion · 11/06/2022 18:06

My grandad is called Aubrey so I always find it odd when I see a girl called it...

NoHeavenNoMore · 11/06/2022 18:08

I love Aubrey. Liked it for DD but went for something else in the end!
I even like Aubree - definitely can't be confused as a man's name!
