Theobur - a made up name

Me and my other half really like Theo but we also really like the name Wilbur, but we are not as keen on Will as a nickname. So we came up with Theobur, Theo will be their nickname but just like Theobur as a full name, a bit more to it. Can't see it is a real name though, is it ok to make up a name??

Don’t see why not. Theobur is quite nice I think.

Floralnomad · 08/06/2022 20:04

No it’s not ok

Stichintime · 08/06/2022 20:05

The thing with names is they carry meaning. A made up name doesn't.

MrsTerryPratchett · 08/06/2022 20:05

I mean it looks like a name. So why not? I'd work on exactly how you pronounce it.

Sirzy · 08/06/2022 20:05

Please don’t. Both lovely names but not together

PickleSarnie · 08/06/2022 20:05

Theobur mints are a minty bit stronger.

Sorry, its not even a made up name that looks or sounds right. If you both like Theo then just go with that!

No it’s not ok

She can calm her child whatever she likes... It's just not to your taste 😆

Sandcastles24 · 08/06/2022 20:06

Yes, I know people with made up names. After it's been said a few times it is just their name.

I lik it

Honaloulou · 08/06/2022 20:06

Change you own name to something made up if you really want, but don’t saddle your poor kid with it.

WhatsInAMolatovMocktail · 08/06/2022 20:06

Couldn’t you call him Theodor Wilbur? I mean sure you can make up a name but Theobur seems a bit pointless as Theodore is so similar and is a real name.

SoftSheen · 08/06/2022 20:06

Please don't do this... just call him Theo Wilbur (or better, Theodore Wilbur).

TheWayTheLightFalls · 08/06/2022 20:07

Well… as made up names go, it’s a pretty good one imo. Plus within two minutes everyone would be calling him Theo anyway, and in time people would assume he was Theo/Theodore. So it’s not actively harmful imo, but it is a bit odd.

NiqueNique · 08/06/2022 20:07

Ugh no.

Just call him Theodore Wilbur and use Theo as his name.

DogsAndGin · 08/06/2022 20:09

Yes I agree with this. Or call this one Theodore and the next one Wilbur!

AssignedSlytherinAtBirth · 08/06/2022 20:10

You're setting him up for a lifetime of people asking him "Theodore?" when they mishear him. Just call him Theodore Wilbur.

obsessedwithsleep · 08/06/2022 20:10

This is a pretty awful name 😂

daisy2345 · 08/06/2022 20:28

Hmm thing is i really don't like the name Theodore

Staynow · 08/06/2022 20:31

You don't like Theodore but you do like Theobur???

Kanaloa · 08/06/2022 20:33

Then choose another real name. If you love Theobur change your name to Theobur and let your child have a real name that actually exists and not a silly mashup of two names. See how you love constantly saying no not Theodore, TheoBURR. Like Theodore mashed with Wilbur. Like if Aaron’s Burr’s daughter was called Theo for short. Yeah, my mum thought it was cool.

soundsystem · 08/06/2022 20:37

Call him Theo Wilbur then if you don't like Theodore? And by all means call him Theobur if you like when he's small as a nickname

daisy2345 · 08/06/2022 20:37

No Theodore reminds me of Alvin and the chipmunks, it is not that strange to like one variant of a name a not another. Also like Theoden which is a real name, just like Theobur more.

OP posts:
NiqueNique · 08/06/2022 20:38

Then go for Theobald. Or, like pp said, pick something else entirely.

I do need to remind myself that the vast majority of name threads are made up and not to get sucked in. It’s not funny; it’s tedious.

NiqueNique · 08/06/2022 20:39

Ok crosspost. On reflection you sound as if you might actually be genuine.

Don't make up a name for your child. It’s not a good idea.

Ha!

astoundedgoat · 08/06/2022 20:40

It sounds like a particularly obscure dwarven name from Tolkien. You CAN invent a name, but you are dooming him to a lifetime of spelling and explaining.

Theodore is such a lovely name.
