Aubree or Kaydence?

i do prefer modern names, the old fashioned lily, Olivia, etc isn’t really my style. My husband likes aubree which I think is adorable but I think it’s becoming a lot more commonly used now and I like Kaydence because I think it’s more unusual. Neither are that common in England but that dosent bother me. Which one? Middle name will be Skye

I’m not keen on either, to be fair, and I always thought Aubrey was a boys name. I like Skye though.

Floralnomad · 20/05/2022 17:51

What does it matter how it matches with your other childrens names , the child you are naming is an individual . Kaydence just looks like you cannot spell or are trying to be different .

Gasp0deTheW0nderD0g · 20/05/2022 17:57

Aubrey was a boys' name but that ship has sailed now. Not uncommonly used for girls now on the other side of the Atlantic, and sometimes over here too.

As so often happens, once a boys' name starts being used for girls, it stops being used for boys. I think it was Seeker, whose posts I miss, who used to point this out here. She's quite right. Most parents are perfectly happy to give their girls a boys' or unisex name, but giving a baby boy a girls' name is out of the question. We can all see why.

This reminds me of family pointing out that my cousin had misspelled her daughters name "Florance". She doubled done that they wanted it to be unique and had intentionally spelled it that way 😐

zafferana · 20/05/2022 18:05

Okay, I'll say what no one will say, OP your 'pretty' spellings spell 'chav' to many people. Sorry, but that's the truth and that's what you're going to lumber your DD with, a name that creates a negative connotation in the minds of people who may not have even met her. I know it's not nice and you'll probably come with 'I don't care what judgemental people think', but there, I'm just being honest.

MayDaze · 20/05/2022 18:06

*Doubled down (ha serves my pedantic arse right!)

MayDaze · 20/05/2022 18:08

Just to add - Aubrey Plaza is a famous US female actor, so the masculine spelling is now pretty accepted as a feminine name.

WeBuiltThisBuffetOnSausageRoll · 20/05/2022 18:08

I'd always think of Aubrey as a boy's (well, old man's) name. FWIW, it was the middle name of Boycie from OFAH.

I think Cadence is quite nice, but spelling it Kaydence is firstly going to give her a lifetime of having to spell it out and people still getting it wrong; and secondly, bullies will likely call her 'Dense Kay' every time she makes a mistake (or just all of the time - bullies are nasty like that).

Also, the word 'Cadence' has a certain, well, cadence to it as a whole word, so she would be called 'Cadence'; but 'Kaydence' looks like a hyphenated-name-without-a-hyphen, so her name would effectively just be 'Kay' to most people.

Alwayshoovering · 20/05/2022 18:08

I've only known one Aubrey and it was a man in his 40s. So don't think its a 'modern' name as such. The same with Kaydence. They are older names but becoming more common.

Firesidefox · 20/05/2022 18:09

Aubrey is a boy's name.

WhatsInAMolatovMocktail · 20/05/2022 18:11

Aubrey is not modern. Ive known several who would now be age nearly 50.

If spelling it wrong makes it modern, then sure, it's modern.

WeBuiltThisBuffetOnSausageRoll · 20/05/2022 18:11

Cultural ignoramus that I am, I've never heard of her; but that just sounds like a location to me, rather than a person's name - like Albert Hall or Madison Avenue!

Gasp0deTheW0nderD0g · 20/05/2022 18:11

Kaydence is not an older name. It's a made up name on the pattern of Kayden and Jayden. One of the confusing things about it is that it sounds like the word 'cadence'.

Firesidefox · 20/05/2022 18:13

OP in your post of a month ago you were suggesting other names and saying the middle name would be 'Rayne'. Today her middle name is 'Skye'.

What next, 'Raynebowe'?

WeBuiltThisBuffetOnSausageRoll · 20/05/2022 18:13

There was a famous (male) athlete called Aubrey Montague, but it turns out that Aubrey was his middle name and his first name was actually Evelyn - which only muddies the waters even more....

Gasp0deTheW0nderD0g · 20/05/2022 18:13

Introducing the hyphen possibility makes it even worse. Who wants their child to have the name 'Dense'?

TidyDancer · 20/05/2022 18:14

OP do you have any other options? Neither are particularly nice names imo and they're not made better by the strange spellings. Your DC won't thank you for a lifetime of having to spell their own name.

NatriumChloride · 20/05/2022 18:16

Kaydence? Aubree?
Do you mean Cadence and Aubrey?
Really, OP, you need to be checking spellings for these names otherwise you’ll be thought of as a thick parent who can’t spell.

Ohilovetorave · 20/05/2022 18:17

They're pretty awful, Kaydence is just absolutely awful. I mean for the love of god why

MurderAtTheBeautyPageant · 20/05/2022 18:19

I quite like Cadence. Cady for short.

MurderAtTheBeautyPageant · 20/05/2022 18:20

But I prefer your middle name choice of Skye.

berksandbeyond · 20/05/2022 18:22

They're both dreadful. Sorry but you did ask!

Puffalicious · 20/05/2022 18:32

Not good. There are so many lovely names out there. Aubrey is not too bad, but Kaydence? Really?

Kiera? Kara? Audrey?

SDTGisAnEvilWolefGenius · 20/05/2022 18:37

@Amandawest447 , to me Kaydence/Cadence means an ending - a sequence of chords or notes completing a musical phrase.

I do like Aubrey, but please don’t go for the cutesy spellings.

WeBuiltThisBuffetOnSausageRoll · 20/05/2022 18:42

Introducing the hyphen possibility makes it even worse. Who wants their child to have the name 'Dense'?

Yes, it is rather a lose/lose scenario.
