Honest thoughts. Is it ridiculous? I really like the sound and look of it.

OP posts:
Are your children’s vaccines up to date?
Caughtavibe · 24/01/2022 17:58

High school will be a brutal experience for him!

Soubriquet · 24/01/2022 17:59

It’s a slightly different spelling and pronunciation to Oberon but honestly I don’t think it would work for a child

Either of them

DaisyWaldron · 24/01/2022 18:02

I like it, but it's associated so strongly with Auberon Waugh and his ancestors that I' d always go with the Oberon spelling. Also, around 90% of mumsnetters would probably describe my taste in names as "try-hard".

toastofthetown · 24/01/2022 18:05

I quite like it, though I prefer the similar Oberon. Just sounds cleaner somehow. With regards to name bullying / high school being difficult, a popular and confident child can pull off any name, and any name can be used to tease someone someone wants to. And with a much wider pool of names in use I'm not sure that name based teasing is a big problem. And there's always Ron as a nickname if he doesn't like the full name.

High school will be a brutal experience for him!
Will it ever.

If he was at school now, he'd get the piss ripped out of him for being a coronavirus variant.

Fangdango · 24/01/2022 18:07

I like it better than Oberon - King of the Fairies a bit of a startling association ...

BiscuitLover3678 · 24/01/2022 18:07

@Caughtavibe

High school will be a brutal experience for him!
Why though? Because it’s Shakespearean?

Is there an issue with that association? All I can see is that he is a journalist.

Aubergine

RussiasGreatestLoveMachine · 24/01/2022 18:11

He’s probably going to need to be good-looking, charming and in the rugby 1st XV to be able to pull it off…

Winniemarysarah · 24/01/2022 18:11

I’m not even sure if this is supposed to be a girl or boys name

SummaLuvin · 24/01/2022 18:17

I think you're getting an unfairly hard time OP. It's not a bad name.

Like PP, I prefer Oberon, and I would give a very traditional middle name (like James) just in case, but I don't think it would make him target for mockery, not like it's anything bonkers or something that sounds rude.

Reminds me of Oberyn from Game of Thrones, so I automatically assumed it was a boys name.

RussiasGreatestLoveMachine · 24/01/2022 18:20

Why though? Because it’s Shakespearean?

Auberon isn’t Shakespearean. Oberon is.

Tal45 · 24/01/2022 18:21

Way too much. Why would you do that to a child?

RussiasGreatestLoveMachine · 24/01/2022 18:21

And there’s nothing wrong with Shakespearean names, per se. DD has one - and from A Midsummer Night’s Dream, too…

Snowiscold · 24/01/2022 18:25

I think it’s OK. I rather like it. It wouldn’t occur to me to link it to Oberon, which surely has different roots.

Thatswhatmamasaid · 24/01/2022 18:28

Why, just why 🤯

hariborabbit · 24/01/2022 18:32

I wouldn't choose it personally, but I don't think the children of today will get bullied for having an unusual name once they reach secondary school. The trend these days is to give your child a name that's as little-used as possible.

fillitup · 24/01/2022 18:34

High school will be a brutal experience for him!

I never get this, there may be some odd teasing around names but school is far tougher for a child that stands out physically eg taller or shorter or slimmer or bigger than average, red head, glasses, bad at sport, acne etc.

fillitup · 24/01/2022 18:35

Plus where do people live that there is no diversity & therefore different names?

Doomscrolling · 24/01/2022 18:41

Oberon, king of the fairies, and you don’t think he’ll be teased? They do Midsummer Nights Dream in school quite often.

Auberon Waugh was nasty piece of work if memory serves - certainly rude and unkind in that “look how clever I am” was Will Self adheres to. And it always feels like a misspelling of Oberon anyway.

Mamamamasaurus · 24/01/2022 18:46

Is it ridiculous? IMO, yes, yes it is.

Aubergine. And we all know that emoji.

SleepingStandingUp · 24/01/2022 18:52

I like it but I named my kid after one of the angels in Supernatural so lots of people wouldn't trust my choice

@RussiasGreatestLoveMachine I hope it's Tatiana

Luredbyapomegranate · 24/01/2022 18:52

I like it.

And Bron is a nice nn
