Dd2 is due January and agreeing on a name has become difficult! Dh has vetoed all my suggestions and these are the only two names left.
One is an absolute love of mine and the other is dh’s favourite. What would you go for?

I don't usually like things-turned-into names but I think Winter is beautiful. Ivy has got a retro feel which is nice now but might feel a bit 'of the moment' later. Winter is so strong and that really mitigates the potential 'too frivolous to be a lawyer' factor that people always mention on here . Actor, author, stateswoman - works with all.

The only thing I would say is that if you have an unusually glam surname like de Havilland it might be a bit de trop.

Ivy

It'd definitely be de trop if you were Mrs de Winter - you'd have to conceal your forename forever. Grin

I prefer Ivy.
Winter Ivy sounds to me like a variant of the Ivy plant. we have winter ivy growing on the wall

timoteigirl · 09/12/2021 20:20

It depends on your family name. To me Ivy is a Goth name.

Palosverdesblue · 09/12/2021 20:24

Or we have a Winter Ivy hanging basket ....

WeasilyPleased · 09/12/2021 23:03

Winter nn Winnie.

shiningstar2 · 09/12/2021 23:09

Ivy.

JaninaDuszejko · 09/12/2021 23:11

Winter is not a name so Ivy has it. What about January? Maybe not if your surname is Jones though.

Pattygonia · 09/12/2021 23:13

Have you thought of Eira from the welsh for snow?

LitCrit · 09/12/2021 23:15

I dunno @ErrolTheDragon it’s insanely decadent and fin de siecle.

DramaAlpaca · 09/12/2021 23:19

I quite like Ivy.

I don't like Winter at all, it's not an attractive name and lends itself to the hideous Winnie as a diminutive. Just no.

CoutureBakes · 09/12/2021 23:23

Now all I can hear is...."Miss Ivvvvy Winterrrrrs!"
Who is a sweet and talented drag artis by the way.
But I love that name and think it sounds so pretty and we are constantly saying it here Smile

Enough4me · 09/12/2021 23:24

Winter is a cold month when people look forward to spring. I can't get my head around it as a name as it makes me think of rain, ice and hail. Ivy makes me think of IV drips though. So Winter, out of these two.

Skysblue · 09/12/2021 23:27

Ivy.

Please don’t call your child Winter. They will get teased so much, and Winter is a horrible season.

nannybeach · 09/12/2021 23:28

Neither, you're right Ivy IVI (ex nurse) winter is a season. Would you call someone Spring

nocoolnamesleft · 09/12/2021 23:29

Ivy, by a long way.

Kitkat151 · 09/12/2021 23:35

Ivy
Winter is not a name

Kite22 · 09/12/2021 23:56

I'm not particularly keen on Ivy, but it is miles better than Winter.

Winter Ivy sounds like an air freshener

Agreed, or just a gardener describing a plant.

Callcat · 10/12/2021 00:09

Winter! Love it so much.

Luredbyapomegranate · 10/12/2021 00:09

Ivy - it's lovely

I think Winter is grim (!)

Time40 · 10/12/2021 00:25

Ivy.

Winter isn't a name.

Flutterflybutterby · 10/12/2021 04:23

Winter. Ivy too common now and Winter can be Winnie which is gorgeous 😍

raintropics · 10/12/2021 10:50

I love both but Ivy has become very popular so I'd probably choose Winter.

Ivy Winter or Winter Ivy would be beautiful.
