Do you prefer Ivy or Winter for a girl?

Dd2 is due January and agreeing on a name has become difficult! Dh has vetoed all my suggestions and these are the only two names left.
One is an absolute love of mine and the other is dh’s favourite. What would you go for?

Oh and poison ivy, it is just not a great name.

Bluntness100 · 09/12/2021 17:33

Ember is a lovely girls name.

RightOnTheEdge · 09/12/2021 17:36

I like both names.
Ivy Winter better than Winter Ivy though.

KirstenBlest · 09/12/2021 17:37

@Bluntness100, Ivy Brennan , Gail's MIL. Ivy is not dated though - it's the 6th most popular name in England & Wales

trumpisagit · 09/12/2021 17:37

I really think Winter is not a great name to have to carry. It's cold, dark and has negative connotations for many people.
I love Summer as a name.
Ivy is lovely.

StrychnineInTheSandwiches · 09/12/2021 17:38

Winter as a given name makes me think of a Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe/Box of Delights/Green Knowe sparkly and frosty fictional winter, rather than a soggy and grey real winter.

I prefer it to Ivy which I think is quite a plain name. And super popular.

WaitinginVain · 09/12/2021 17:38

Winter is beautiful. I don't personally like Ivy but they do sound quite nice together.

ErrolTheDragon · 09/12/2021 17:39

@Bluntness100

Ember is a lovely girls name.
As in dying fire? Or is it for people born in the four -ember months?Confused Sounds like someone saying Amber with a far-back accent.
GucciBear · 09/12/2021 17:40

Ivy. Winter is a season.

liveforsummer · 09/12/2021 17:45

Ivy or as suggested Holly or Robyn. Sorry Winter isn't a great name if it's even a name at all.

Deadringer · 09/12/2021 17:49

Winter is awful. I am trying to imagine being called Winter and what springs to mind is dark, cold, wet, dreary, i would hate to be saddled with a name that has those connotations. Ivy is fine, Ivy Winter could work.

Whitewolf2 · 09/12/2021 17:56

Ivy. I just don’t get seasons as names (or days or months, Sunday for example is not a name!)

Palosverdesblue · 09/12/2021 17:59

I love winter - my favourite season. Not negative for everyone!

TotoBay · 09/12/2021 17:59

Ivy

Whenigrowupiwanttobea · 09/12/2021 18:00

Love Winter! And Winter-Ivy has a beautiful ring to it!!!!

AnFiaRuaNua · 09/12/2021 18:00

I like Winter, Win for short is lovely.
Ivy an ugly sound imo.
I like Nollaig and Noelle as well

Whenigrowupiwanttobea · 09/12/2021 18:02

Winter conjures up images of crisp snow, glowing fires, hope and expectation for me! As opposed to Summer which means prickly heat and sunburn with hay-fever!!!

Daisydoesnt · 09/12/2021 18:06

Whatever you do OP don’t use BOTH names - Ivy Winter is a US drag Queen. A very nice drag queen (she won miss congeniality) but there’s thing where whenever anyone says her name they say it in a really high pitched, annoying voice.

KristinAmandaThomas · 09/12/2021 18:09

Winter.

Because as lovely as Ivy is, I’d always have fear that if she ever said anything mean she’d be nicknamed Poison Ivy.

TwinklyBranch · 09/12/2021 18:12

Ivy. Winter is ridiculous! And as for Winter Ivy, don't do that to the poor lass.

gersteddybears · 09/12/2021 18:15

Winter. I always think of poison ivy when I hear ivy.

JuneOsborne · 09/12/2021 18:17

Winter is really beautiful! Winnie or Tia for nicknames!

Bluntness100 · 09/12/2021 18:27

I can’t believe anyone has actually recommended calling a child winter ivy, wtf, 🤣

EnidFrighten · 09/12/2021 18:33

Ivy. I wanted to call DD it because I liked the idea of her being determined and tough and climbing her way through life.

Winter sounds a bit mewly and scrawny to me.

Chakraleaf · 09/12/2021 18:35

Ivy
