My sister kind of stole my baby name :(

I told my sister a few months back that I really liked the name Judah for a boy. We were both expecting boys but she was dead set on calling her baby boy River so I thought I was on safe ground telling her my choice. Anyway she just came out of hospital and announced out tof the blu that her baby was to be Jude. I am completely gobsmacked and quite upset to be honest but I'm not prepared to cause a massive fuss and a fall out over a name. Anyway just wanted some advice, would you still call your baby Judah if your sister had named their baby Jude? Or do you all think I should just bow out graciously and go with my second choice which is Josiah or my hubby's first choice which is Theodore/Theo/Teddy?

@yoghurtdaily. So sorry about your little Elijah.
Your sis is pretty low imo.

WaltzingBetty · 02/11/2021 05:44

she cares about it.
why be insensitive?
In what way is it insensitive to offer a direct personal experience of the situation the OP asked about @ZingDramaQueenOfSheeba

How do you know the Op cares what Mischance's grandchildren are called ? Or are you deliberately misunderstanding her very clearly and well intentioned post as an excuse to stick the boot in on a baby names thread? Confused

WaltzingBetty · 02/11/2021 05:46

Josiah is likely to get Josie as a nickname
That's tough to pull off

Theodore is lovely

WaltzingBetty · 02/11/2021 05:49

@yoghurtdaily

Omg I'm loving the previous poster replies!

Definitely laugh and be like "I find Judas awful I just said it as diversion. Josiah Theodore was always my top pick!"

So you're suggesting slagging off the name of an actual baby to its new mum? Nice.

I doubt very much she's named her baby with the sole intent of spiting the OP

WaltzingBetty · 02/11/2021 05:53

@DifficultBloodyWoman

I’ve always thought of Jude as a girl’s name, like the song, ‘hey Jude’.

Your husband’s choices are all much nicer.

The song written about John Lennon's SON you mean?

Oh yeah. Classic example of Jude being a girls name Confused

THisbackwithavengeance · 02/11/2021 06:02

If Judah was your first choice and you told her that, then I honestly would just use it.

If she doesn't like it, tough.

What does it matter really, unless you live very close and the boys are going to be bought up together. Even then, just shrug and say it was your name first. Call her out on it.

thewhatsit · 02/11/2021 06:04

Josiah is an awesome name!

(Can’t say the same for Teddy though. Theo is nice.)

UnsuitableHat · 02/11/2021 06:18

Call your child whatever you want. Sounds like you have some nice alternatives to Judah though.

NessieMcNessface · 02/11/2021 06:31

What a nasty thing of your sister to do. Nothing would stop me having the name I wanted if I had thought of it first and was justified in doing so. So even if your sister had actually called her child Judah I would call mine the same name. I don’t know how she could possibly be miffed by it if you had told her that it was your chosen name. Not keen on Josiah but love Theodore ‘Ted’.

PanicBuyingSprouts · 02/11/2021 06:34

I totally understand you being upset but both Josiah and Theodore are nicer names.

TheWayTheLightFalls · 02/11/2021 06:40

Perhaps Judas, after your sister? Grin

I much much much prefer Josiah.

bangonthedoorgroovychick · 02/11/2021 06:42

Josiah Theodore sounds like a lovely name together Smile

Yusanaim · 02/11/2021 06:43

Judah is so like Judas - I don't think I'd risk it.

And short name for Josiah is Jo/Joe

PanicBuyingSprouts · 02/11/2021 06:45

Angel2702 · 02/11/2021 06:58

I would go with Josiah it’s a lovely name as is Theodore but Theo / teddy / Theodore are very very popular at the moment.

Beautiful3 · 02/11/2021 07:02

Hmm I know no-one owns a name but your sister?! She was naughty becits not like you can both name your boys the exact same name, is it?! You could pretend to, to get your own back?! Make her sweat for a bit! Honestly jude is really popular around here, I like the name Josiah better.

Joystir59 · 02/11/2021 07:02

Josiah.

SoupDragon · 02/11/2021 07:05

I think Josiah is far better. Then, as previously suggested, you can laugh if your sister says "I thought you were going for Judah" you can laugh and reply "No, that sounds too much like Judas! It was just a diversion."

Theodore is also nice but way more popular so there will probably be loads of Theo/Ted/Teddy names in his class.

FreeBritnee · 02/11/2021 07:06

Judah is a horrible name so she’s done you a huge favour.

SunshineCake1 · 02/11/2021 07:11

Judah is too close to Judas. Josiah isn't a name I haven't heard before and I couldn't use Theodore but either way your sister is not very nice, changing the name out of the blue indeed.

Call yours River!

StartupRepair · 02/11/2021 07:11

@yoghurtdaily so sorry for the loss of Elijah. Glad you are NC with such a cruel sibling.

Inlander · 02/11/2021 07:12

I would wait until baby is born to see what name suits him. We had a name picked out for our baby but when she was born we felt like a different name suited her better! If you still feel like your original name choice suits him then go for it. Good luck OP!

neededafart · 02/11/2021 07:14

@Crumblinginside

She was really mean to do that. But being honest I prefer Theo or Josiah. Lovely names.
Agree with this
dailydreamin · 02/11/2021 07:18

What about a little mix of both and call him Jonah?

2me2u2u2me · 02/11/2021 07:24

@ZingDramaQueenOfSheeba

your sister is a twat I'd find it very hard not to sing "Hey Jude" to her every time we speak from now on, just to piss her off (I think at least for a year)

I'd go with Theodore Judah

Love this Grin
