My sister kind of stole my baby name :(

I told my sister a few months back that I really liked the name Judah for a boy. We were both expecting boys but she was dead set on calling her baby boy River so I thought I was on safe ground telling her my choice. Anyway she just came out of hospital and announced out tof the blu that her baby was to be Jude. I am completely gobsmacked and quite upset to be honest but I'm not prepared to cause a massive fuss and a fall out over a name. Anyway just wanted some advice, would you still call your baby Judah if your sister had named their baby Jude? Or do you all think I should just bow out graciously and go with my second choice which is Josiah or my hubby's first choice which is Theodore/Theo/Teddy?

Love Theodore; love Josiah. Not fussed on Jude or Judah anyway.

She’s done you a favour.

Autumnleaves4 · 02/11/2021 00:18

I prefer your other choices to .Judah, I think this has negative connotations, when I was young people would call you a Judah as a disloyal person after Judas so I definitely don’t likethis name. I think she has saved you. But ?I would still make it clear you are not happy with her.

TaraR2020 · 02/11/2021 00:20

@yoghurtdaily that's a terrible thing for your sister to have done. I'm so sorry you lost boy Flowers

MobyDicksTinyCanoe · 02/11/2021 00:22

Much prefer Josiah, Joseph or even something like Orson.

GreenLunchBox · 02/11/2021 00:23

@NewtoHolland

It's out of order of her, but Judah reminds me of Judas which is commonly used as an insult, Josiah or Theodore are lovely.
I was going to say I don't like Judah because it reminds me of Judas. In fact I'm sorry but Judah is horrible
GreenLunchBox · 02/11/2021 00:24

Josiah and Theodore are lovely. I'd probably go with the latter

notangelinajolie · 02/11/2021 00:31

If you want to call your baby Judah then you should. Don't let the name your sister has chosen for her son put you off. She knows what name you wanted so I can't see how she can be upset.

However, I think she has done you a favour. Josiah and Theodore are much nicer names than Judah which is far to samey to Judas.

Aria999 · 02/11/2021 00:33

You could keep 'accidentally' calling your DN Judas. Fitting.

I also think Josiah is a great name and Judah is a bit meh fwiw. Less keen on Theodore as he would get Teddy which I hate.

GatoradeMeBitch · 02/11/2021 00:41

would you still call your baby Judah if your sister had named their baby Jude?

Erm no Grin But now it's basically off the table I think Judah sounds too much like Judas, your LO would spend the rest of their life hearing about how they are almost named Judas.

Both your other options sound much nicer and give your DS more than one option for a nickname.

teezletangler · 02/11/2021 00:41

Wow that's terrible OP. I am sorry. I can't imagine choosing a name that was in any way close to my sister's chosen name.

I love the name Judah. I had a huge crush on one as a teen, he was so lovely. You should still call your son Judah! Don't let her take your name.

DrGoogleSaysSo · 02/11/2021 02:20

Your other options are actually better, particularly Theodore, nevertheless your sister was nasty.

PrincessNutella · 02/11/2021 02:25

Judah is too close to Judas. Josiah is gorgeous.

DifficultBloodyWoman · 02/11/2021 02:28

I’ve always thought of Jude as a girl’s name, like the song, ‘hey Jude’.

Your husband’s choices are all much nicer.

Suzi888 · 02/11/2021 03:53

@ZingDramaQueenOfSheeba

if you haven't brought it up yet then wait until she does. then tell her that suggesting Judah was a diversion tactic because you didn't want to tell anyone the ACTUAL name you picked.

mwahaha

^ 🤣🤣🤣🤣

But honestly, name your baby whatever you’d like to.
Your sister is man spirited and selfish, keep that in mind in future.

Suzi888 · 02/11/2021 03:53

Mean not man!

oh for the love of everything that is Beatles

"Hey Jude" refers and was written to Julian Lennon, John Lennon's first born son.
the song title has nothing to do with any girls.

Jude is a boys' name.
I think you are confusing it with Judy

Boudiccasback · 02/11/2021 04:02

@hotmeatymilk

Josiah for your baby, Judas for your sister
Grin
Yogaandcocoa · 02/11/2021 04:05

I really like Josiah. I don't like Judah but Jude is ok.

I don't like Theodore but that's just me.

I have a feeling Josiah is popular atm. It was on my list and I've seen a thread about it a few days ago.

You shouldn't have told your sister the name but for all you know it was on her list anyway.

TheWestIsTheBest · 02/11/2021 04:27

@penni00

There is also the issue of the song 'Hey Jude' which could be used to mock a child endlessly in school.
Unlikely. It never happened to my now grown-up son anyway, although he does hate the song. We call him Judy to annoy him sometimes though, he just laughs.
DifficultBloodyWoman · 02/11/2021 05:10

No, no confusion about the pronunciation. Just thought it was an abbreviation for Judy.

And I also think I thought it was a girls’ name because in the book of Bridget Jones’ Diary, it was sung at Judy’s wedding.

And… I don’t really like the Beatles!

PennyWus · 02/11/2021 05:11

Theodore and Josiah are fantastic names. She did you a favour!

Mummyoflittledragon · 02/11/2021 05:16

I’m loving the suggestions that you named her baby and Judah was a ruse. I agree it’s too similar to Judas and much prefer the name Josiah. And / or Theodore shortened to Teddy/Theo.

@yoghurtdaily what a callous thing to do to you. Flowers

MoggyP · 02/11/2021 05:30

Your DSis has been weird - though I suppose it might have been on their list as well.

Josiah is a lovely name, much nicer than Judah IMO

Capferret · 02/11/2021 05:35

When fathers names were passed on cousins often had the same name.
I have an Uncle Bill who’s cousin is also Bill.
If you want Judah then have it. If you’re fairly low contact no one will even realise outside your immediate family.
Theo and Josiah are great though.
As for your sis naming her precious dc out of spite rather than love. Words fail me.

NotMyselfWithoutCoffee · 02/11/2021 05:39

Those two second choices are both beautiful, although josiah is very unique.
Maybe honour your husbands choice and do Theodore josiah?
I think she's actually done you a favour as judah sounds a bit much like judas to me.
