My friend hates my baby name

Me and OH have agreed on a name for our daughter that we both love. I told one of my friends our choice and she said it’s ridiculous for me to pick a “plain boys name” for a girl. We aren’t changing our minds, and we are very set on this name for our baby. I just hope if people don’t like the name and are rude about it when she’s here, it will grow on them the more they think about it. Should I be worried?

@Reagan37

The name is Brynn (pronounced as brin)
I'm really not a fan of trendy BNOG (everyone here saying James would be fine is making me cringe) but Brynn is not a trendy BNOG... it definitely has more common usage on girls than boys.

I also don't find it plain.

HazelandChacha · 23/10/2021 17:01

It's also in a sense a place name - e.g., Bryn Mawr - and as such unisex

That’s because ‘Big Hill’ doesn’t really have a sex.

Ilovecaviar · 23/10/2021 17:03

Uncle Brynn - gavin and stacey.
So yes it would make me raise an eyebrow and wonder why you’d called a baby girl a Welsh boys name.

As a few other have said, you need to think about a name in context of your daughter having to be called brynn from a wee baby to an adult with a job. Also I reckon it will be shortened to Bree, so you need to be ok with that.

IveGotASongThatllGetOnYNerves · 23/10/2021 17:04

Sounds nice.
Tell your friend she should feel absolutely free to not use it for any daughter she may have.

mam0918 · 23/10/2021 17:05

People saying Ryan Renolds has a daughter called James... yes and other Celebs have kids called Audio Science, North West, Pilot Inspektor - it doesn't make a great argument.

Mumsnut · 23/10/2021 17:07

I wonder if people will say Brienne instead, after all the Game of Thrones fervour?

HairyFeline · 23/10/2021 17:10

Brynn is a lovely name!!

Iimaginethiswillbefun · 23/10/2021 17:10

Georgie? Or Beau

Justilou1 · 23/10/2021 17:10

Fuck her!

Iimaginethiswillbefun · 23/10/2021 17:11

Oh balls didn’t see the update.

Lachimolala · 23/10/2021 17:11

I’d go for Brynne instead of Brynn. Lovely name though.

CactusFlowers · 23/10/2021 17:12

I’d assume a Bryn was male.

peachesarenom · 23/10/2021 17:13

I like it!

DespairingHomeowner · 23/10/2021 17:13

It’s a nice name and perfectly ok for a girl - ignore your friend

3scape · 23/10/2021 17:13

Why would Brynn (a single syllable name) get shortened? I've got three children, two with flexibility in the use as a male/ female name. Most people are fine with it. In fact the ONLY negative came from a relative who has the MalenameA stick on the end to make it feminine. But she was convinced her parents wanted a boy.

BananaPB · 23/10/2021 17:15

Brynn made me think of Gavin and Stacey then Dance Moms. I see that the G&S character's name is one "n" though. Do your friends know this.because it could be why their initial reaction wasn't so great

SophieKaczynsky · 23/10/2021 17:16

It's very popular in America as a girls' name and also Brynley is used a lot there

EineReiseDurchDieZeit · 23/10/2021 17:18

I have passionately hated many names my friends have given their children.

I have never said a word.

It is really overstepping.

Phphion · 23/10/2021 17:21

According to official statistics, since 1996 in England and Wales there has not been a single year where the number of female babies called Brynn has been more than the number of male babies called Bryn. There has not been a year where it has even been close.

In fact, there is only one year when the number of female babies called Brynn has exceeded the number of male babies called Brynn.

So while Brynn may be commonly recognised as a girl's name elsewhere in the world, in England and Wales it is a distinctly uncommon name for both girls and boys being given to less than 3 babies of either sex most years. Bryn is more common and almost exclusively given to boys.

stayathomer · 23/10/2021 17:22

Had only heard of it from Gavin and Stacey. Now that you say yes it sounds like more of a girl's name to me. gorgeous Op- beautiful!!

LowlandLucky · 23/10/2021 17:23

I would assume Brinn was a male, Bree i would assume was a female.

Coyoacan · 23/10/2021 17:23

I didn't like the name my friend chose for her ds or the name my dd chose for her dd, but now the children are here I love them and their names.

vajingleberry · 23/10/2021 17:23

@Viviennemary

It's dire. Why would you.
Why would you say something so unpleasant.

Have a fucking word with yourself.

UpCloseAndPersonalWithGlenda · 23/10/2021 17:24

I was wondering if it was going to be Barry, so Brynn is a disappointment.

It might be asking for comments from classmates along the lines of "put her in the brynn". So while my gut instinct was that your friend should mind her own business, I'm now thinking she might be trying to be kind.

Ellmau · 23/10/2021 17:28

pI've not heard of it as a girl's name and I think if I got a work e-mail from a Brynn I would reply Dear Mr (and obviously then e very embarrassed I was wrong if hey replied saying I was wrong). But it's quite unusual even for boys so I think it should be OK.

But I bet she has to explain millions of times how to spell it.
