My friend hates my baby name

Me and OH have agreed on a name for our daughter that we both love. I told one of my friends our choice and she said it’s ridiculous for me to pick a “plain boys name” for a girl. We aren’t changing our minds, and we are very set on this name for our baby. I just hope if people don’t like the name and are rude about it when she’s here, it will grow on them the more they think about it. Should I be worried?

@Reagan37

The name is Brynn (pronounced as brin)
It's a nice name, but in Welsh/Wales it is 100% a boys name (with one n) in case that has any baring.
TatianaBis · 23/10/2021 17:29

To me it’s a Welsh male name and I’m a Feminazi who thinks girls should had female names.

Also, my name is a unisex and it’s more annoying than you’d think to be generally assumed male.

I like Briar and Bryher (Cornish version) though.

Well technically I think it is a boys name, I’m from wales and every Bryn I’ve ever met has been male. Stuff her, she’s rude and a complete cow for saying the name you and your partner love is stupid. It’s not like you’ve chose lucifer 🤷‍♀️
CatNoBag · 23/10/2021 17:30

@HazelandChacha

It's also in a sense a place name - e.g., Bryn Mawr - and as such unisex

That’s because ‘Big Hill’ doesn’t really have a sex.

It does in Welsh though, and it's male. If i was female it would be Bryn Fawr
stoneysongs · 23/10/2021 17:31

I've never heard of it as a girls' name, but then I am in Wales, where Bryn is an old fashioned male name, perhaps along the lines of Roger or Brian.

opinionminion · 23/10/2021 17:32

Robin/Robyn ?

WingingItSince1973 · 23/10/2021 17:33

It's a gorgeous name for a girl. Don't let your friend put you off. It's very soft and beautiful x

Inertia · 23/10/2021 17:35

It’s a nice name, but almost everyone will think it’s boy’s name - every Bryn I’ve ever met has been male and Welsh/ of Welsh heritage. And it’s now strongly associated with Gavin and Stacey , so be prepared for the jokes around that. Your friend will think she’s doing you a favour by mentioning it.

SleepQuest33 · 23/10/2021 17:39

It’s a great name! Ignore your friend

iolaus · 23/10/2021 17:40

Unless you asked for her opinion then she's completely rude - the only acceptable reaction to a baby's name unless you are asked is thats lovely

That said to me, it's a clear boys name, though the double n makes it a little less obvious (I'd probably add an e to make it more feminine) - but it's your baby and your choice

I've only heard of one female, potentially, having it as a middle name - and I did say something (despite my first point) because the first name she'd paired it with made it into a street name within the town we live in - and I did say unless she was planning on moving before the baby starting school I wouldn't use the combination together in that order (never mentioned the fact it was a boys name though)

LessthanJurassicPark · 23/10/2021 17:41

To me it’s a Welsh male name and I’m a Feminazi who thinks girls should had female names.

Kudos on appropriating the slur Feminazi Grin but I’m genuinely puzzled as to why you think Feminazis would want girls to have traditionally girls’ names!

Brynne sounds nicer IMO and more feminine. I like it. Just tell people it’s after your grandma and they can’t say anything.

It’s lovely and nothing to do with your ‘friend’
Zippy1510 · 23/10/2021 17:42

We considered bryn as a middle name to honour my dad (Brian)

Sexnotgender · 23/10/2021 17:43

Bryn is lovely- I would spell it with one n. No idea if that’s correct or not! I own a Mulberry Bryn 😂

Rule number one of naming babies is tell no one until the baby is born. When expecting my daughter I told my mum a few of our shortlist and she made a face at all of them 🙄

Eddielzzard · 23/10/2021 17:47

I usually can't stand the names in these baby names threads, but yours is lovely. I really like it. Ignore friend

LittleDandelionClock · 23/10/2021 17:49

@dementedma

People call girls James???
That was my reaction too! Who calls their daughter James?!

I would not have been as rude as the OP's friend, but Brynn for a girl? Yep it's fine @Reagan37. Smile

Imabitbusyatthemoment · 23/10/2021 17:50

I knew a little girl called Brynn. Very cute. In fact I didn’t realise it was a boys name for a long while after as I’d only heard it on her.

LittleDandelionClock · 23/10/2021 17:51

@LessthanJurassicPark

Brynn with an E on the end of it, looks like it should be pronounced BRINE.

TatianaBis · 23/10/2021 17:52

How many boys are named Sue? Parents would run a mile before gave a boy a girl’s name, yet people think it’s cool to give girls boys’ names.

I’m proud to run like a girl because I am one, my DD has a female name because it’s cool to be female.

LittleDandelionClock · 23/10/2021 17:53

It's no more a boys name than Chris. Can be used for a boy or a girl. Except you add an N for a girl with this name. Smile

TwinsandTrifle · 23/10/2021 17:55

It's a nice name.

However, I don't know why you think it's a unisex name. It's not. It's as much a girls name, as Oliver. By all means call her Oliver Brynn, by you then hand her a life of anyone seeing her name written down assuming she's a boy.

Lovesicecreams · 23/10/2021 17:55

@Queenslotus I also thought maybe we will finally find out the truth about the fishing trip

Lovesicecreams · 23/10/2021 17:56

Brianna is a gorgeous name

DamnitFanny · 23/10/2021 17:58

Lovely name - ignore your friend 😀
