My friend hates my baby name

Me and OH have agreed on a name for our daughter that we both love. I told one of my friends our choice and she said it’s ridiculous for me to pick a “plain boys name” for a girl. We aren’t changing our minds, and we are very set on this name for our baby. I just hope if people don’t like the name and are rude about it when she’s here, it will grow on them the more they think about it. Should I be worried?

Too late now, but if you love a name and want zero opinions don't share it until the baby is here. Not many people are bold enough to be negative or critical of a name once a baby is here.

To me Brynn is a Welsh name I only know if one person called Brynn and he's a man.

I think it would be lovely on a girl though, different. But that doesn't matter. If you both love it use it, Sod anyone else!

Just had a google and Brynn is the female version of Bryn.

I think it's lovely.

Nameberry is generally not a reputable website. They make up any old crap. Having said that, I know a female Brynn in her 60s.

whatausername · 24/10/2021 13:52

It's a boy's name taken by another culture and reused for girls, most likely from ignorance or perhaps from sheer indifference to the original culture. I see why your friend thinks it's a boy's name. Why her disliking it bothers you enough to create a thread is a different matter.

orangeautumnleaves · 24/10/2021 14:42

@daisypond 😂😂😂 a reputable baby name website. Didn't realise it had to be academically verified!!

There are many other websites that I could have randomly plucked as well as articles on the use of the name, all of them say the same.

Yes may well be an American take on a Welsh name, but who cares? This is how names evolve.

Inertia · 24/10/2021 17:08

Been trying to place Rhonyc ( thinking maybe valleys) until it dawned on me that it must be an acronym when someone mentioned celebrities.

GogLais · 24/10/2021 17:27

Nameberry isn't reliable. It lists names like Emlyn, which is a boy's name, Isolde, which is Esyllt in Welsh, Evanna and Guinivere - no V in Welsh.

I know far too many male Bryns to think of Brynn as a girl's name

One of my favourite female friends in the world is called Bryn. She loves her name, and so do I.

Cindie943811A · 30/10/2021 14:38

I really like Brynn and, having no association withWales since an ancestor left in the 17thCentury, didn’t know Bryn was an exclusively male name.
OP if you reside just across the borderfromWales, then maybe not a wise choice but if you are in theEnglish heartland then go ahead. You may be the first in a trend. The fact that Bryn appears according to other posters, to be borne by older men means there won’t be a score of little boys called that at your DD’s school.
Good luck

ChrissyPlummer · 30/10/2021 17:04

It’s the name of a smallish town a few miles from me. I’ve only ever heard it as male, like in Gavin & Stacy.

SumAndSubstance · 30/10/2021 18:50

I am not Welsh, but I know it’s a Welsh male name 🤷‍♀️

PinkCheetah · 31/10/2021 19:49

I would have said Brynn is a girl's name. Your friend is being ridiculous.

Sucu · 03/11/2021 07:09

Your friend should do some research! Brynn is actually a unisex Welsh name! I would suggest though research how to pronounce it correctly being a Welsh name

Frazzled2207 · 03/11/2021 07:17

I think your friend is being honest. Your daughter might be set up for a lifetime of spelling and explaining.

Bryn is a very standard Welsh boys name meaning hill. Never come across a Brynn but it sounds like it could be an American girls name.

Bluntness100 · 03/11/2021 07:17

I work with a man called Brynn, I always thought it was a boys name, and to be honest I thought it was like Brian. I’d be concerned she’d be called Brian in school.

It really is not.
theyarereallytakingthepissnow · 03/11/2021 07:32

I like it a lot, beautiful and a little unusual Smile

MONSTERSALAD · 03/11/2021 07:50

It's a Welsh boys' name. As PPs have said, it's like calling your daughter Barry or Colin.

PoshWatchShitShoes · 03/11/2021 08:23

I don't like the name at all, but I wouldn't tell a friend that.

My sister/BIL and then BIL/SIL have all chosen really dreadful baby names IMO, but they didn't tell anyone their choices before the babies were born, so no one passed comment directly to them, as now it's more about the lovely babies than the concept of a particular name...amongst other family members though there was a lot of comment/judgement 😂

Tal45 · 03/11/2021 09:09

I thought it was going to be Rowan which I think is very pretty. Brynn just makes me think of Bryn from Gavin and Stacy which really puts me off.

Marcipex · 03/11/2021 11:55

I was guessing Rowan or Sasha.
I would assume Brynn was a boy. Also it autocorrects to Bryan.
I think it’s quite abrupt sounding. However it’s not actually awful. I know a little Mona, for instance.

Jazell · 03/11/2021 20:18

In the US, Brynn is a very popular girl's name. In fact I've never heard it for a boy.

Lalliella · 03/11/2021 23:28

It’s a bit blokey. How about Brianna instead?
