Have you heard any recently that have made you do a double take? I know of two baby Jason's born in the last two years, the first of which I found very unusual, the second of which is making me think this is maybe coming back in vogue and I'm behind the times?

Ocean-tigerlilly was the most unusual named friend DD had

wombatsandaplant · 16/10/2021 20:37

Severus.

I’m in a Harry Potter group on Facebook and someone named their son Severus.

@AtomHeartMotherOfGod

What's the chick from the Exorcist called?

Sorry if this has already been said Wink

For mixed reasons, maybe Delilah, Connie, Bo, Lillibet (!), Angharad, Cassia.

For boys, Bear, Blue/Bleu, Edwin, Woodrow.

I went to school with an Edwin and an Angharad! Edwin, I always thought was a lovely name, but he was a really nice person so that probably influenced it!

@KumquatQuince

Sisters Aurelia, Iolanthe and Eirlysiane.

Separately, a little boy called Brian.

Those are beautiful names! I assume the second is pronounced "Yolanthee"? Not sure about the third, but it looks lovely written down!
MonkeyPuddle · 16/10/2021 21:24

@wombatsandaplant I know someone who’s a massive Star Wars fan and their son has the middle name ‘Skywalker’ thank god it’s just his middle name.

Some terrible ones on the mums group I'm in, they all seem to have made up their own unique names half colour, half grandad name, slap an "ie" on the end to make it's cutesy ( is that a word?) . A bit outing to say them, but really really bad, plus a few city names.

Unusual recently ..

Heidi
Winnie ( a girl)
Chase ( boy)
Glade ( boy)

hopjumpskipplop · 16/10/2021 22:47

I know a few children called blu, the spelling makes me cringe and makes think "sad and blue" even though I like the colour.

I know a Dolly, a Dotty and a Lottie.

But I went to school with a Rudi that I've never heard since.

DinaofCloud9 · 16/10/2021 22:51

Halo for a girl.
I know toddlers called Nicola and Samantha which seems unusual these days.

Nearlytheretrees · 16/10/2021 22:57

I've also met a Bleu (girl) and solo (girl) recently

DeadMetal · 16/10/2021 22:59

Zelda and Tiberius are in my DCs class at school

SeanMean · 16/10/2021 23:34

I once worked in a nursery where there was a boy called Arsol. The parents hadn't been in the UK long and didn't speak English and I always wonder if they realised as he got older and started calling him something else.

It isn't quiiiite the exact (second) word, but I always felt deeply sorry for little Kamaljit in my school.

A not-particularly-unheard-of girls' name in the USA is Abcde - pronounced 'ABB-suh-dee'.

I'm probably just extremely immature, but outside its normal context (spoken in an authentic French accent), if I hear (or see) 'Bleu', I automatically mentally add a 'rgh' on the end - might as well just call your PFB 'Boak' (or 'Boakina' if a girl, of course) Grin

Mrsfenchurch · 17/10/2021 00:17

I met a baby Linda the other day. And my neighbours toddlers are David and Mark. All very 70s & 80s! On the other hand In my sons reception class there’s a Zebedee and I also know a baby Rocky, a Cooper, a Ziggy and a Skip! Love them all. My most out there was my old boss’s son Atteus. And I found a babies called Basil and Nelson quite surprising!

Mango and Breeze.

@Alonelonelylonersbadidea

Mango and Breeze.
Sounds like a limited summer special from Febreeze or some washing powder manufacturer!

Aww, go on. Just give us the worst one!
Crunchymum · 17/10/2021 14:07

Pumpkin (flashed up on the board at the GP surgery, so I'm pretty sure it was the child's name)

Xyla. At a hospital appointment, found it such an interesting name I got talking to the child and mother (who confirmed the spelling)

GreyhoundG1rl · 17/10/2021 15:42

@mafted

Cove and Harbour Haze Boy Kale Pepper and Ginger Navy-Blue Denee and Dugee Duke Rosy-Lee
Someone called their son Boy? I'm assuming it was actually a boy, not a girl... The registrar shouldn't have allowed this.
pinkhampoppy · 17/10/2021 17:14

Ross

alloutofcareunits · 17/10/2021 17:17

I used to teach teenage parents, we had some interesting names! The most unusual were probably Craze and Jack-Daniel.....

Rayna37 · 17/10/2021 19:31

Boy is a Dutch name, there's a fairly famous pro cyclist called Boy van Poppel and a couple of Dutch footballers with the name.
To be fair eccentric or Dutch is often difficult to call

I was a teen parent and now in my 30's I'm so glad my DS was a boy and not a girl - teen DH and I were not sensible with girls names... She would have been Leyah Dion 🤮

Both DC's (one boy/one girl) have very normal not quite overused names!

Whyarewehardofthinking · 17/10/2021 21:11

I've taught plenty of head turners; my favourite are Fox, Tiger, and Orion.

I misread Orion and nearly called him onion.
