Have you heard any recently that have made you do a double take? I know of two baby Jason's born in the last two years, the first of which I found very unusual, the second of which is making me think this is maybe coming back in vogue and I'm behind the times?

Just remembered another I heard of (friend of one of my learners) la-la, pronounced 'ladashla' Confused

I always laugh when someone says "that sounds like a grown up name" all those Alan's and Ethel's were once baby's

careerchangeperhaps · 18/10/2021 14:04

My nephew has twins in his class called Ayrton and Sienna. Me thinks the family are formula one fans.

Erinrose82 · 18/10/2021 14:18

I have a Patrick! He's nine and I just love it still, although he gets called Paddys a lot , including from his siblings. Currently thinking of a boys name to go with it, his brother is William and sister Alanah .. some of these are great ! I surprised myself liking Nathan Smile

@Mrsfrumble

I know a 5 year old Jason. It’s a lovely, classic name that deserves a proper comeback.
Actually I agree with you! There was a child at my primary school (many years ago) and the poor boy was quite neglected but I like the name.

@WeBuiltThisBuffetOnSausageRoll

I once worked in a nursery where there was a boy called Arsol. The parents hadn't been in the UK long and didn't speak English and I always wonder if they realised as he got older and started calling him something else.

It isn't quiiiite the exact (second) word, but I always felt deeply sorry for little Kamaljit in my school.

A not-particularly-unheard-of girls' name in the USA is Abcde - pronounced 'ABB-suh-dee'.

I'm probably just extremely immature, but outside its normal context (spoken in an authentic French accent), if I hear (or see) 'Bleu', I automatically mentally add a 'rgh' on the end - might as well just call your PFB 'Boak' (or 'Boakina' if a girl, of course) Grin

Arsene is very popular in France - a French friend named her son that but don't think I'd do that here!
MrsToadflax · 18/10/2021 14:41

I find it odd when people compare names to 'my elderly neighbour' or some other connotation. Yes, some names are known from a particular era, but when assessing a name I just say it out loud a few times and remove any pre-conceived ideas about it. On its own, when said, does it sound pretty, strong or whatever you're going for. My DS has an 'old man' name, but it was popular years ago and all those old men were babies once! People can be so harsh about names - 'oh I hate it' and I just think it's a bit much.

Chakraleaf · 18/10/2021 14:56

I know a lady called marina who called her son Harbour lol

KirstenBlest · 18/10/2021 16:41

Some of these names are quite normal. Heidi and Patrick are not unusual at all.

KirstenBlest · 18/10/2021 16:44

I know so many Angharads that the name seems meh. It's OK said by a welsh speaker but doesn't sound nice anglicised - the ngh is tricky and it really isn't Ann Harrud or Ann Garrud

TuftyMarmoset · 18/10/2021 18:37

I was just looking at the 2020 ONS data and was really surprised to see Harbour on both the boys' and girls' lists. Cartel on the boys' list was also a surprise.

TuftyMarmoset · 18/10/2021 18:38

I was also surprised by the number of just letters on the boys' list - like just the letter J or the letter S. Also the name 'Seedy'.

GreyhoundG1rl · 18/10/2021 18:58

Seedy!

I take it these were outside the top 100?
TuftyMarmoset · 18/10/2021 20:29

@mum2jakie yes - Seedy was joint no 4608 with 3 babies, same as Cartel, S and J. Harbour was 3334 (5 babies) for boys and 4535 (4 babies) for girls. The lower two thirds of table 6 in the ONS data are always an adventure!

Philandbill · 18/10/2021 20:32

My frIend taught siblings called Beefy and Ice. Given names, not nicknames.

starfire88 · 18/10/2021 20:56

I've met two young boys in the last 6 months called Richard.

WeBuiltThisBuffetOnSausageRoll · 18/10/2021 21:00

What?!?!?!?! So all the rest of us read the Biff, Chip and Kipper books and all, as one, exclaim "What ridiculous names!"; but these parents, alone, think "Oooooh, now that's given us an excellent idea!!!"

Could have been worse, I suppose: at least they only called one baby Beefy and not Botham Grin

mafted · 19/10/2021 10:40

Someone locally has a made up name which is an amalgamation of their parents names, I'd forgotten as they go by a completely unrelated nickname but the unique baby name thread jogged my memory. Parents have bog standard name like Brian and Linda (but not those)

TuftyMarmoset · 19/10/2021 10:57

The Jezebel thread made me check and there were 15 baby Lucifers born last year. There’s a naughty child name if ever there was one Grin

whymewhyme · 19/10/2021 21:16

Dad was called Mick.....daughter was MICKETT i shit you not.

WeBuiltThisBuffetOnSausageRoll · 20/10/2021 09:03

Whaaaaat?!?!?! I would say you couldn't mickett up, but he obviously did....

ClaraBean · 20/10/2021 09:29

@TuftyMarmoset I wonder if the book 'House on the Cerulean Sea' influenced those baby Lucifers. One of the main characters was a lovely boy called Lucifer nn Lucy

WeBuiltThisBuffetOnSausageRoll · 20/10/2021 10:52

Aside from the obvious thing of using the name Lucifer for a child - what boy wants to be known as Lucy?

ElvisPresleyHadABaby · 20/10/2021 16:39

@RavenclawsRoar

B/g twins with basically the same name: George and Georgia.
DD knows Angela and Angelica, identical twins..
