Have you heard any recently that have made you do a double take? I know of two baby Jason's born in the last two years, the first of which I found very unusual, the second of which is making me think this is maybe coming back in vogue and I'm behind the times?

Heaven-Leigh. It actually really suited her she was a really sweet kid. It was her sister Rain-Bow I felt sorry for.

On a separate note an old school friend is pregnant and considering calling her twin boys Lighting Bolt and Thunder Bolt.

There is an Anakin in DD’s swim class.
Baby Howard lives down the street.

Redsquirrel5 · 16/10/2021 02:20

Had a Heavenly - Blu at school.

Maximilian is a Polish I had one of those in Reception mostly got Max. I went to school with one too an extremely clever lad.

Mercedes is a Filipino name. I know two.

There were quite a lot over the years of unusual names but some others locally heard were Ocean, Luna, Honey, Levi ( several) Dexter (he didn’t know it was a breed of cow) , several Nevaehs I actually quite like this now as we had several at school and they were all lovely girls.

Chardonnay mum was screaming her name she was only two or three. Several Taylor’s both girls and boys two in the same class one of each.

Met an Aurelia and a Magdalen a while ago. Since met a child called Aurelia which I think is a really pretty name.

I met a baby Denis recently, that was a throwback winner!

HuntingoftheSnark · 16/10/2021 05:55

King Harold. I thought he'd be known as Harry but no, Kingy.

MamsellMarie · 16/10/2021 06:02

Daniel also have a Daniel in reception and his brother is Richard who is 8 they sound like a couple of middle aged men!!

Haha, it's all relative - I'm old and these are young names to me.

MamsellMarie · 16/10/2021 06:04

There doesnt' seem to be much cross gendering in names . Boys named after Gods or tough/strong sounding names and the girls flowers or pretty gentle names (excluding Atlas).

@Jerryandtom

I once worked in a nursery where there was a boy called Arsol. The parents hadn't been in the UK long and didn't speak English and I always wonder if they realised as he got older and started calling him something else.
I work with someone called Arsol! He doesn't go by any nicknames, I always feel awkward saying his name but I've got used to it now.

Not a baby but a work colleague was telling us yesterday she is taking her daughter to a Kevin's 5th birthday party tomorrow.

Bruce
Ralph
Coco
Dolly

Are all names that have made me do a double take!

Gave my new DD an adult/old lady name. Named after my dgm. The name really suits her and because it happens to be gender neutral it feels kinda modern. Am personally not a fan of babyish sounding names for girls or flower related names etc (very happy for people who do enjoy those names)

PatchworkElmer · 16/10/2021 06:32

Simon
Trixie

TeddyBeans · 16/10/2021 06:36

I met a Howl once. I had an inkling it was inspired by Howl's moving castle and mum confirmed. He was a lovely little thing

Tilltheend99 · 16/10/2021 06:39

@MamsellMarie

I’m in my 30s and every other guy my age is a Dan, Rich, Matt, or James. Was wondering the other day if Matthew had now gone out of fashion. Was also thinking about the Beatles and how kids today must think of Paul and John as very old fashioned (George clearly still popular thanks to royals) Although I do know a little boy John so wondering if that is starting to come back. Or Get Back lol
HoollyWugger · 16/10/2021 06:40

I met someone who called her daughter Unique.

Tilltheend99 · 16/10/2021 06:41

I’ve noticed that Simon is a very popular name in Scotland

MonkeyPuddle · 16/10/2021 06:45

Oh and there was a Martin in DS’s nursery group. He’ll be four.

Tilltheend99 · 16/10/2021 06:49

@Classica

Regan
I have friends who almost named their baby this as they are big horror movie fans. I have no problem with it except that I think it sounds a bit American.
Banani · 16/10/2021 06:53

Twinkle

Rayna37 · 16/10/2021 06:55

My son's nursery class includes a LOT of names that verge on the extraordinary and I thought I took it all in my stride; a high concentration of names that have been mentioned on this thread. I then did an involuntary snort when I heard a Mum call out to Atticus recently; hopefully no-one noticed!

PurplePizzaCake · 16/10/2021 06:56

It's interesting how people's opinions on what is an unusual name differ so much.

I think Ralph, Luna, Patrick, Nathan, Frank etc are very normal names for little children now.

I met a baby Gordon recently which surprised me initially as I hadn't heard the name for a long time but then i thought it's actually a great name and I like Gordy as a nickname. Might just add it to my list for my next baby

VienneseWhirligig · 16/10/2021 07:09

I worked with a woman whose twin dds were Skye and Bleu (born the year Coventry City won the FA Cup). They will be in their 30s now...

Recently, baby Brian and his sister Maxine surprised me.

lovablequalities · 16/10/2021 07:14

All this is "so unusual" is regional though. Where I live Daniel, Iain, Keith, Paul, Martin, John, David, Donald, Robert, Simon, Colin etc never lost popularity and I've taught countless numbers over the years. Boys in particular tend to be named for grandfather or father here so none of these names have an "age" for me. Girls are more likely to be have unusual names and spellings (Ezzmee and Ebonnie and so on) but still tend to the traditional Anna, Katherine, Rachel etc.
