Dusty or Dennis

We have our little baby due in 4 months time so we're in no rush about names we're just curious..

for a little boy we both love the name Dusty. We think it's so cute and you don't really ever hear of it. However, me and DH aren't too sure about the long version which is Dustin. We like it but we don't love it, whereas we LOVE Dusty. And we're not sure if people would just assume that his name was Dustin?

Another name in the running is Dennis with the NN Denny. We love the long version of Dennis and think it's a really sweet name which is why we're so stuck on what to do because we really do love Dusty.

Any opinions of advice would be much appreciated!

Thank you all :)

* Dougie is the best of your ideas - Dusty (to me) is a girls name*

^I agree. Dusty also sounds like a trans name

anormalperson · 05/10/2021 06:59

I like Dennis

Mamamamasaurus · 05/10/2021 06:59

Dusty Bin.

Dennis the Menace.

Now imagine a 25 year old, going for a job interview. Still think they're cute names?

Usuallyhappycamper · 05/10/2021 08:39

I love Dennis. It was on my list for ds2, but we went with another name. He is so naughty I think it would have suited him though!

KirstenBlest · 05/10/2021 09:23

Dennis is lovely. Dusty is awful

viques · 05/10/2021 09:44

@millzcrawf

We actually really like Dusty for a girls name as well! 💗
Busty Dusty. Just putting it out there and I am speaking as someone whose go to karaoke is Son of a Preacher Man........
KirstenBlest · 05/10/2021 09:48

Came back to say Busty Dusty too Grin

manhattenrain · 05/10/2021 13:04

I love Dustin! I dislike Dennis.

@millzcrawf

so I appreciate all your opinions. I dont think it's okay though to reference my baby as a 'poor kid' this baby is the most loved baby ever. Just because we have different name styles does not mean that it's a poor kid.

I know I asked for opinions but I honestly didn't think the names would get this much hate.. we aren't naming our baby Dusty because of everyone's reactions so thanks for the comments and letting us know early it's not a name people would be keen of at all I appreciate it x

Please don’t let the judgy mumsnet crowd be the determining factor OP - if you and OH really want a particular name, then just go for it. As hard as it is to remember when trapped on these forums, they really are not reflective of the wider world, and that is especially true of the baby name board. So much hate.

For what it’s worth, Mumsnet has history for hating my DDs name, but I’ve never met a single person who hasn’t loved my DD and commented how much her name suits her. People in the real world do not react to baby names like they do on here

However, Dusty is definitely a girls name, so save that one for a future DD! Grin

Marcipex · 07/10/2021 22:47

Dougie is nice.

Dusty and Dennis are awful. Bin and Menace respectively.

AuntDympna · 08/10/2021 07:05

@millzcrawf what fab names!
I have just read this crazy story about St Dennis preaching a sermon while walking along carrying his head under his arm.

And Dustin is related to Norse name Torstin, it says here... Which means Thor's Stone.

When I thought of dust, I thought of His Dark Materials, and also of Carl Sagan saying we are all made of stardust. I thought is it in the style of Ash, Eartha, and Clay, names for dedicating a child to the earth.

daisypond · 08/10/2021 07:18

Dusty has entirely negative associations to me. Dennis is better, but I’m not keen. Douglas or Dougall are better.

AuntDympna · 08/10/2021 07:58

Dennis is the English form of Dionysus, the Greek god of wine. Other forms include Dion which was the name of Dusty Springfield's older brother. Have you got an O'Brien connexion there?
Dusty Springfield was nicknamed Dusty as it was a boy's name and she was a tomboy.

zafferana · 08/10/2021 08:04

They're both awful OP. I can just imagine other people's faces if you call the poor little mite Dusty. Mark Wahlberg can carry off a name like that IN A FILM, but a DC will just get teased. Please don't call him Dusty Sad

Dennis isn't great either, but it is at least a proper name and Denny is quite cute for a little boy. My worry is that teachers and other adults might think 'Dennis the Menace' and that could label him as a troublemaker, which you don't want.

furbabymama87 · 08/10/2021 08:25

I don't like any of those names. Dennis is the least offensive though. To call a kid something like Dusty, they would need a big personality to carry it off, otherwise it's a bad idea. Lacey Turner called her daughter Dusty but she called the other baby Trilby which says it all really. But it's alright for them as they've got a famous parent and it's expected. You can't send Dusty to the local comp.

AuntDympna · 08/10/2021 09:56

Any teacher who labels a kid Dennis the menace is deeply unprofessional. And any random adult who does so is an ignorant bully.

peaceinourtime · 08/10/2021 11:35

Dusty is nice as a male name on its own. Deny/Dennis is fine too.

Pixilicious · 08/10/2021 11:41

Dusty is awful. At least Dennis is a name

Pixilicious · 08/10/2021 11:43

@furbabymama87 - I had to Google her so not that famous! Bloody ridiculous names

MrsSkylerWhite · 08/10/2021 11:44

Sorry, don’t like either.

Only Dusty I’ve heard of (Springfield) was a woman. Don’t suppose that matters with a made up name, though.

spiderlight · 08/10/2021 16:06

'Dusty' means ugly or generally unfortunate in teen slang at the moment - my teenager and his friends refer to a bad haircut as a 'dusty trim', for example. That usage will probably fade over time, but it shows the general negative connotation of the word in general. It's not one I'd bestow on a child.

onlyreadingneverposting8 · 08/10/2021 16:09

I have a 15yr old Dennis - he's fab. Never had any teasing or being called "Dennis the menace" he's never been a menace - that's his little brother! He's never really had a nick name - always been Dennis to us. His siblings call him "Den" a bit more now he's older.

Viviennemary · 08/10/2021 16:09

Dusty?? Out of the question. Not keen on the name Dennis but at least its a sensible option.

Amurray1368 · 02/08/2025 12:02

Hey did you do it?! My son's born next month and I wanna name him Dusty from Daddy's home as well

RuthW · 02/08/2025 17:25

Dusty bin - don’t be silly. Give your child a proper name
